I guess one positive is that unlike others, Patterson is being made the earn his opportunity, he should hopefully really want it and grab it when it does come.
Yeah really fighting by making 6 100s in what 5 or 6 seasons. People are talking about him like he is Brad Hodge making a truck load of runs and not getting a look in

He may well have been the second highest run scorer, but he did it with an average of 39. Just having a quick look at the stats, I can see 17 or 18 with a better average.

Batsmen playing international cricket just don't get the chance to play as much Shield cricket as they should. Labuschagne only scored 78 more runs than Glenn Maxwell but had a total of 7 more innings to do it, or 70 more runs than Joe Burns in 8 more innings. And Burns was dropped after one test in SA.
What caused Burns to play so little cricket last season? He had no international duties. Look Maxy has had his papers stamped unfortunately

No one is talking about him being anything like anyone from the golden era, I'm getting a bit sick of this hyperbole across several forums. this is NOT a good era for bats in general, so you pick your best available, particularly in an era where collapses are regular, pick your guys who are good for 30 every time, something Labubs, S.Marsh, M.Marsh, Finch, Head are not.

Picking someone because the get to 30 is just stupid. Let’s pick a bloke that can do the hard work get in but then throws it away

Read somewhere that Renshaw and Pucovski are competing for one middle order slot. Surely with Renshaw's bad form you don't throw him into a random position he's not accustomed to? It would be the sort of idiotic decision our selectors have been partial too recently I guess.

You think if you were playing Burns and Renshaw that Renshaw would open and Burns would bat down the order as he has had some success there before where as Renshaw has done nothing but open

I wouldn't be comfortable playing Renshaw in his current form or Pucovski given his age/experience. If only they had waited to name the squad.
They were probably told by the networks like last time that they needed to do all their promotions/photos etc. in advance. A farce, but par for the course from Cricket Australia to allow things like that.

Patterson looks the most competent out of any batsman playing. It’s an absolute farce he’s not in the test squad.
To be fair, he'd failed in this match no one would be talking about him. All the hype to get him in is based completely on a game that doesn't even have FC status. I do think he's a better option then Marnus and probably Head but Maxwell is still a more glaring omission.

No it's not, he has been consistent at shield level for a long time now. This innings is just highlighting how bad our selectors are that he was not even included in the squad.

The Australian cricket team is embarrassing right now. We’re no longer competing with the top 4 (India, SA, England, Pakistan).
Add Smith and Warner to our team and we absolutely are still competing with these guys. We are in a very weak spot and no doubt we need things to change but lets not pretend that those teams wouldn't struggle losing their two best batsman as well. Not long until those guys are back, it's now about making sure we actually have a competent batting lineup to surround them with for once. Unfortunately the selectors are making that as hard as they can.

You pick the best performed players over a period of time, or at least give them a chance.

Patterson is one of them, needs to be added to the squad.

Just because he isn’t averaging 50+ dominating for seasons on end seems like a weird excuse not to pick him when literally no one else is doing that and all those picked ahead of him in this match have a lower first class average.

In this time of fewer choices, go the guy in form who is 25.
