Was just wondering if anyone has a list of the rookie draft order, or even a list of how many rookies each club will be taking?

Just want to get a rough idea of how deep the rookie draft will be.

Pretty sure the order is...

Melbourne
West Coast
Fremantle
Port Adelaide
Essendon
Carlton
Brisbane Lions
Richmond
North Melbourne
Adelaide
Collingwood
Sydney
St Kilda
Western Bulldogs
Geelong
Hawthorn

repeat.

2nd part - its up to the clubs do decide how many players that want on their rookie list.

How does the rookie draft work for a club like the bulldogs?
Where i think they have 3 rookie spots still available but they may only use 2 maybe even one of these due to funding reasons?

why do some teams have 38 players on their list...and others 40???

The one's with 38 have more rookie picks. How does this work?

veterans, if a player is listed as a veteran outside of the list.

ie. Simon Goodwin from Adelaide.

then you are permitted another player, his salary is counted, but does not take up a senior spot...if you follow that.

Clubs can have up to two veterans outside their main list of 38. If those two positions aren't used by veterans then they are filled by rookies.

Look closely and you'll see there are other anomalies as well. Sydney & Brisbane get 3 more rookies than anyone else, these rookies are drafted before the rest of the teams enter the rookie draft but they can only be drafted from their home state (ie NSW & QLD respectively).

NSW Scholarship holders and non-Irish International Rookies (eg Sydney's Pyke) are also additional to the normal number of rookies teams are permitted on their lists. Only in their first year on the rookie list though.

There are 74 rookie spots available, now whether they all get used is another story.

But its good that potentially 70-80 guys could be given a chance when you include the preseason draft picks.

Saturday only introduced half the new faces into the AFL. Plenty of opportunities left for those who missed out.

I've drawn up a Rookie Draft List, based on the team vacancies shown on the team lists released by the AFL yesterday:

Brisbane & Sydney have the option of selecting up to 3 players ahead of the draft, these players coming from their "zone" (QLD & NSW respectively). These selections are optional. They may well choose not to use them this year, with GC17 having picked the eyes out of the QLD crop and the NSW Scholarship having stuffed Sydney's chances of finding any real undrafted talent.

However, should they choose to use these picks, then you will need to remove one of their other picks from the draft. For example, if Brisbane take one local kid they would lose pick #74, if they take 2 kids they lose 74 & 71.

So this means Sydney could take Klemke as he is from NSW and in perspective they would be getting him with there last pick in the rookie draft..
Wouldnt be a bad pick up

The additional rookie picks are only for local kids, so if not used there is no make-up elsewhere. Those spots just sit vacant.

Also, somewhat artificially, the local rookie picks are technically placed at the back end of the RD, even though the players are apparently pre-nominated. See, for example, 2006 where the Swans' local picks were assigned 55, 59 and 63 in the 64-pick RD. (And, in seemingly the greatest rort of all time, Sydney were allowed to pick just-delisted Matt Davis as a 'local rookie' where his only connection to NSW was that he got drafted there from SA 3 years previously! What are the odds they'll pull this trick again in 2008 with the also-just-delisted Kristin Thornton (originally from WA) and/or Peter Faulks (Vic), if allowed?)

Been following footy long?

geez apologies for asking a question. My general footy knowledge would trump anyone on here including tactics and knowledge of all other clubs....

but i am first to admit my knowledge about laws and the technicalities of the game is as bad as anyone on here.

Thanks to those who responded...totally cleared up now.

Only if Richmond don't take him in the PSD first.

I must confess that I'm really not sure how this works. Do they have to take three NEW rookies from the zone if they want to fill the spots, or can they could NSW drafted rookies already on their list towards these three spots?

Sydney have retained Brendan Murphy and Jake Orreal as rookies for 2009. Where were these players drafted from originally? Would they be eligible to occupy one of the three "local" rookie positions?

Geez, footy becomes confusing when its draft time

South west NSW and the ACT are not allowed to receive scholarships. The talent in these regions is untapped and has not received the same attention as the scholarship eligible kids in the rest of NSW. 'Real undrafted talent' still exists and could be chosen and developed by Sydney.

Given that the default is that Sydney are struggling to get 3 local boys onto its total rookie list at any given time, there wouldn't usually be a lot of point in allocating existing NSW boys on the main rookie list to one of the 3 bonus local spots. As the picks each year are on a 'use them or lose them' basis, if there was a local rookie pick who Sydney decided to keep for a 2nd year, it would be in Sydney's interests to notionally 'move' them onto the 'regular' portion of the rookie list. Unless Sydney were of the view that there weren't 3 kids in that year's local crop even worth a punt. Which has happened.

But they are eligible for the local rookie scheme. In fact, the 3 players selected by the Swans for their local picks in the 2007 rookie draft were from Osborne, Wagga and Canberra. (They incidentally all got the chop at the end of the '08 season, which is par for the course with local rookies, but the fact remains they were 'chosen and developed'.) Canberra is a different argument to some extent, but you'd be hard put to argue that Wagga and the Riverina are widely ignored by recruiters generally, given the who's who of stars that have come out of the general area in the last 30 years.

In that situation, a club would just pass on their next selections, although it seems we should have the 7 rookies this year [as reported on SEN], 3 retained, Brett Ogle's son & 3 selections this year.

These areas have historically supplied Sydney with most of its "local" rookie picks - far more than the areas now covered by the scholarship scheme. So in practice, one wouldn't expect the depth available to the Swans to decrease that much.

Paul Bevan, Ed Clark, Earl Shaw, Nick Potter are about the only ones drafted from areas covered by the scholarship scheme over the past six or so years - plus Barlow's from an area recently added to the scholarship zones.

Dont worry about it Dave, if everyone was scared to ask a question because someone else would be a smartarse about it , then most others who read the information would remain ignorant. I find it very hard to get hold of any information about the rookie system.
I still get lost when it comes to the rules for international rookies and Irish rookies ( different apparently ). :thumbsu:
