Rookie Draft - What do we think ?

dick seems to be the type of player as a fringe player, going in then out then in and out for most of the season, i hope he can last the distance and not pull out being unable to sustain the same pace
Have to agree with this, there is always the chance dick will be a flop, but you get that sometimes. I'm sure most people would agree the chance to have a fully functional operating dick every weekend is something most guys on here would want.

Mascoulis:

# 48 St Kilda - Michael Mascoulis (Northern Knights - midfielder)

Was injured for much of the year and really seemed to struggle in his 6 games. Haven’t seen a lot of this year but saw enough last year to suggest has some tricks and hence he is very draftable. Is very good 1:1 and he is a terrific size for a midfielder as well. Lovely foot skills and has good speed and endurance. Could play wing or either of the flanks but suspect he will start at HB at an AFL club and go from there. Could be a player who ends up having a very good AFL career because if the draft was held for 17yo’s I am pretty sure he would have been top 50 so there is genuine talent.

#29 Essendon - Michael Mascoulis (187cm midfielder - Northern Knights)

Bit of a trend in this draft that players are really good in parts of their game, but there is just something that lets them down. Mascoulis is a really talented player, very agile and attacking runner. Is the type of player who can quickly turn a game on its head, playing off either a wing or half back. The only reason he is this low is because of consistency. Don't be surprised if he goes earlier based on talent.

#90 GWS – Michael Mascoulis (VIC – Def/Mid)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB:
Recruited from: Northern Knights
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: 35-rookie
Profile: Left footer who can play on a back flank or on a wing well. Lacks consistency, but the talent is there. Really great attacking player with that great line breaking pace and ability to make you look silly. Can kick well on either foot and has some hurt factor.
Why:

Haha.

Brad Dick?? You've got to be joking, waste of a pick.

oh right so you're all fine with the club picking someone lewis broome who played around 2 colts games before getting drafted, but the moment we pick a player with our LAST pick in the rookie draft that has been proven to be a terrific player at afl level you all get pissed off

Good on Brad Dick being a great bloke and all but **** me! What a waste of a pick.
Why not pick a player without the injury history and give him a go. Very annoyed.
Terrible choice IMO. Terrible.:thumbsd:

Just watched a few higlight video's of dick

Has pace can kick on both sides, can mark and reads the fall of the ball very well.

No it's not.

You have got to be kidding right? Dick is proven at AFL level and would have been a regular in our 22 if not consistently injured. Go back to rounds 10 and 11 2009, 25 touches and 3 goals against Port and then kicks 5 the following week against Melbourne on Queens Birthday. JON showed absolutely nothing at AFL level never managing more than 4 games in a year for one of the worst sides in the league.

Well done WCE for taking a chance on him, in a weak draft class taking a guy like this basically costs you nothing and if he gets his body right it could pay massive dividends. Best of luck to Dicky, always loved him at the Pies.

I'd take Brad Dick over JON any day of the week. Proven for starters, sure he has injury concerns but get him out on the park and he will light it up. Unlike JON.

Whoever has watched Collingwood with Dick in there team would see he has pace to burn, great goal sense, a long kick and has a real infectious personality on the field. Get him alongside Murray Newman as a mentor type :thumbsu:

What is interesting across this whole draft by the Eagles is the drafting of players with recent injury history over the past 12 months or, as in Turnbridge's case, lowered their draft rankings / value somewhat.

  1. McInnes sat out the U18 titles with an ankle
  2. Newman had a problem with his hand
  3. M&M - Michael Mascoulis hammie issues, missed U18
  4. Dick - what hasn't broke and then;
  5. Turnbridge - homesick
I see a trend that the club backs itself to get these guys fit and hopes its picked up value here with a few niggles coming at bad times lowering their value.

M&M if he had his body right could have gone 30 > 50.

What is upside?

JON was a long shot. With massive upside given his size, skill set ect..
We know the type of football Dick can play, fringe material on the rookie list.
Not sure how you call him fringe material.

Fit and healthy he'd be best 22

i guess most players would have had injuries at some stage, having said that dick and mascoulis would be a worry.if they can get their bodies right tho they are dead set steal and just what we need.
all up seems like we did quite well in both drafts, have to wait and see how a few of their bodies hold up

I think we went looking for value, hoped that 2 or 3 come off. I'm ok with that.
