For me we have to look at;

Josh Waldhuter
Height: 183cm
Weight: 84kg
DOB: 15/3/93
Club: Central District
Draft range: 45-65
Waldhuter is a tough, team-first mid who the Demons will find difficult to let slip despite not having added any tall timber at this draft. He gets after the ball carrier like he was born to do nothing else, but he also runs a sub-3s 20m sprint, so he's no inside plodder.

Lots of people shocked he didn't get picked up tonight's. Who else was overlooked?

Tom Couch has to be a chance.

And do we have 3 or 4 picks?

As it stands we have 4 picks due to only having 1 veteran listed player in Green.

I read on the drafting board though that every club has an extra 2 rookie slots next year so potentially 6 picks.

Wow thats quite a few! Tom Couch seems to be doing all the right things at training- will be interesting to see if we ask a few more players to train with us over the next week or two.
Yeah,

according to this the reason for the extra rookie picks is due to Greater Western Shithole.

I don't think Davey and Jamar are eligible for the VL until the end of next season.

I'd be looking at:

Manson - surely there is only so far you let a player of his talent slide in a weak draft.

Couch - training well and we didn't select a pure midfielder in the draft.

Small forwards!!!

Nelson - talented midfielder capable of going forward and playing a pressure role

Andrew Boseley, Sam Frost, Julian Dobosz, Jai Sheahan are 4 talls that are worth looking at and could be likely prospects with some time on a rookie list.

Don't think Manson will slide to our first pick in the RD.

Be interesting to see who we invite to train, given the likes of Johnston and Nicholson were picked up via that route in years passed.

i'd laugh my arse off if we were somehow able to snaffle all of Manson, Waldhuter, Frost and also Couch in the rookie draft (of course it would never happen).

But 24 hours ago, most would've taken that in the ND as opposed to the kids we picked up tonight, lol.

The author of that West Australian article is a tad confused (read: hasn't done his research), as he makes it seem like there will be 2 extra rookie list spots for 2012 than there were in 2011. This is not the case. Yes, all clubs (bar GC & GWS) have 2 extra rookie spots for 2012, however these extra spots have existed since the 2009 season when the AFL raised list numbers from 44 to 46, all GWS's entry into the competition means is these extra spots will stick around for another year or 2.

You are correct with Davey & Jamar - both become eligible for the 2013 season. Green is your only veteran for next year.

So 46 spots in total = 39 senior list players + 7 rookies

Nicholson, Evans & Lawrence fill 3 of those spots as your retained rookies, which leaves 4 spots for the rookie draft.

Couch has been training well supposedly, so I'd be surprised if we didn't pick him up.

Someone will surely take a punt on Manson. I'd like to think we have a good base for him to fit in, with Jurrah and Davey at the club. If he somehow is still available with our first rookie pick, I'd like us to take a punt on him. But I feel GWS or Port might pounce on him first.

I had MMM on the radio at work and caught the end of an interview with one of the draftees from Bairnsdale(went to the Dogs I think), and he said one of his mates will be training with us, but I missed the name.

And yes, Waldhuter was surprisingly overlooked at this draft. So I'm sure he'll be in the mix somewhere. We seem to have talls covered on our main list, so I think the 4 rookie spots left will predominantly be taken by midfielders.

Thanks for the clarification.:thumbsu:

Posted something similar in the redraft a reject but what the hell :)

DRAFTEES WHO FAILED TO FIND HOMES

Shane Nelson
Why: Can play small forward and push up in the wing. Won the Nathan Buckley kicking test so I was surprised he didn't find a home.

Sam Frost
Why: Tall defender who can play tall or small. Very quick and loves to create. Skinny also.

Andrew Bosely
Why: Tall defender whose ability to read play has had him likened to Fletcher. Good kick. A bit undersized.

Marley Williams
Why: Like Nelson, he is a small forward who can push up the ground. Unlike Nelson, Marley is a lot chunkier at 80+kg. Not awfully quick.

Josh Waldhuter
Why: Hard as nails inside midfielder who is also quick. Has the body of a man and could play round 1 next year. A reason why he wasn't drafted may have been recruiters thought he were overly aggressive. Not a bad trait a might add.

Waylen Manson
Why: No explain action required.

VFL PLAYERS

Tom Sundberg
Why: Have a feeling Neeld has his eye on him. Line breaking midfielder whose left boot is massive, 50m+. He is solidly built and can play inside. Short kicking not great.

Tom Couch
Why: Been training with us and is apparently been impressing.

Shane Valenti
Why: Apart from it being one of the best AFL fairytales, I reckon he can add something to this team. Again, solid inside midfielder who only lacks pace.

Travis Tuck
Why: Another inside midfielder who I believe deserves a chance. Ferocious attack on the footy and always does the team thing. Not quick and there is an element of risk.

DISCLAIMER: I am not nuts, I am aware we only have 3-4 rookie spots. You may agree or disagree with my opinion, that's fine. If we do manage to pick one or two from the list above, I will be a very happy man.
