Made this thread to see the opinions of others about what to do with the players on the rookie list.

In my view we should...

Retain:
Cachia
Casboult
Dare
Tuohy
White

Promote:
Garlett
Ellard

Delist:
Donaldson (from what I hear he has struggled in the vfl reserves)

Would like to hear the views of other supporters.

Surely someone in our VFL team such as Ahmed Saad or Shaun Austin would be ahead of Donaldson. He has done nothing and has been playing in the VFL reserves.

Caleb Tiller should also be cut because he has done nothing in his whole career.

Didn't see Donaldson play at all in the VFL reserves but he struggled a bit with injury, didn't he?

Either way, he was never going to do much this season. As I recall, he's a very skinny (think Jarrad Grant skinny) kid. Listed at 195cm and tested excellently in the draft camp. Liked the look of him in the preseason practice matches - moved well and took a couple good marks, despite his upper arm being no thicker than his form arm.

He was always going to be a long term prospect and I'd be disappointed if we give up on him after a single season. Probably long odds but as a young KPP with his speed and agility, why not take a chance?

With Garlett and Ellard almost certain to be promoted onto the senior list and potentially White there will be room to give Donaldson another pre-season and see if he is able to perform well next year if this is what the club decides.

I'm tipping the kid stays in the picture.

What are the rules regarding rookies? According to the afl website:

A club can retain a maximum of three players on its rookie list for a second season provided it nominates those players at the time of the compulsory list lodgement.

Wasn't aware of that. Do we get an exemption due to having no veteran players. As far as I know, we're allowed 8 rookies because we have no veteran listed players, though I'm not sure if we're allowed to retain more than three.

Assuming 2 or 3 (Ellard, Garlett, White) are elevated and Tuohy is excluded as an international rookie (not sure if the case), we'll have to redraft at least one of the rookies if we intend to keep them all.

I liked what I saw there too. Tall, and moves like a natural forward. I can't see him leaving after one year.

The disturbing thing from B4F says is that we can only keep 3 without delisting and re-drafting. That would be a pain, but we've done it before.

I agree with the Garlett and Ellard promotions. However, I think that Donaldson is going be a long term project and we will be developing him over the course of his 3 year rookie contract to be a backup forward to Henderson and Casboult.

This year is going to be tricky for delisting as we have a number of highly rated rookies who the club is looking to keep on the list.

I was going to start a thread on this exact same topic a little later in the week but I'll just put my thoughts in here instead.

Jeff Garlett
VFL seniors – 1 game, 3 goals, 0 best
AFL - 20 games, 39 goals, 21 behinds, 12.3 disposals, 3.7 tackles

What a season Jeff had. Started the year on the rookie list, ended the season on the senior list as Carlton’s 2nd highest goalscorer for season 2010. Starting the year in the VFL, it didn’t take long for him to force his way into the senior team, playing 20 games and kicking 39 goals. An excitement machine, knows how to work some magic around the big sticks, however that does not come at the expense of his defensive pressure which is outstanding and which was a reason for praise many a time throughout the season.

Jeffy signed a contract earlier in the season and will be elevated to the senior list for season 2011 and beyond.

David Ellard
VFL seniors – 14 games, 16 goals, 7 best
AFL - 7 games, 2 goals, 4 behinds, 13.1 disposals, 7.3 tackles

Had a sensational 2009 with the Northern Bullants, winning the clubs Best and Fairest award but looked as though he was going to struggle to gain senior selection and elevation despite his hard work. Much was the same for the first half of season 2010, but eventually his form became too good to ignore and he forced his way into the senior team. Played 8 games, mainly as an inside midfield tagger and whilst he didn’t set the world alight, he was a solid contributor in a number of games, including the elimination final against Sydney. Ellard is not quick and is not a great user of the football which raises serious doubts as to his longevity in the game, however his heart, toughness and determination cannot be questioned.

Ellard has now spent 3 seasons on the rookie list so a decision must now be made regarding his future at the club. I would be amazed and bitterly disappointed if he was not offered a senior contract and elevated to the clubs senior list for season 2011.

Simon White
VFL seniors – 2 games, 0 goals, 0 best
AFL - 6 games, 1 goal, 0 behinds, 15.3 disposals, 7.5 marks

Simon came to the club as a more mature age rookie and was touted as being ready for senior football from the get-go. As expected, started the season in the VFL but did work his way into the senior team, playing 6 games before succumbing to injury, having surgery to both hips in early August. Certainly did not look out of place in the top flight and clearly established himself as a more preferred option to Thornton, possibly due to his ability to provide great run out of the backline. Was also thrust forward at certain stages, where I believe he looked more comfortable. Uses the ball well and makes good decisions. At this stage my only real concern is that he was beaten fairly convincingly in one-on-one contests. Whether that be due to nerves, inexperience or strength, he conceded a fair amount of goals and scoring shots to his direct opponent, particularly early on in games. Regardless, there is plenty of promise in Simon as a 3rd defender or a makeshift forward.

I would be surprised if Simon was elevated to the senior list for 2011, but I would be amazed if he was delisted, which he almost certainly will not be. Showed more than enough to suggest he’ll be a handy player for us in the future, and as such he’ll most probably be a nominated rookie for us in 2011, meaning whilst he’s on the rookie list he will be available for senior selection throughout the season, much like Garlett was this season.

Jaryd Cachia
VFL seniors – 15 games, 4 goals, 4 best
VFL reserves – 3 games, 2 goals, 3 best

Jaryd was our first selection in last years rookie draft. Highly rated as a junior (so much so that he was made captain of the U16 Vic Metro team, alongside Tom Scully. Spent a year or so away from football, which may explain why he slipped to us in the rookie draft. Suffered a bout of OP during the preseason which hindered his progress, but worked his way back from it and had a solid year at VFL level. Was dropped back to the VFL reserves for a few games but clearly showed that he is a class above that level by being named in the best in each of those games.

Jaryd is a tough inside midfielder with a fantastic attitude that loves the rough stuff and already has a body capable of playing that role, so it would come as no huge surprise if he made his senior debut as early as 2011. I have little doubt that Jaryd will be kept on the rookie list for a 2nd season.

Levi Casboult
VFL seniors – 19 games, 17 goals, 1 best
VFL reserves – 1 games, 0 goals, 0 best

Fair to say that Levi may not have enjoyed his first couple of months as a Carlton player, receiving far more attention than many AFL senior listed players, let alone those taken in the rookie list. I am, of course, referring to the incident involving Levi at the Booze Cruise and the car crash, which could have ended his career before it ever really began. A young kid suffering such a traumatic incident could have been forgiven for going into his shell and letting it derail him, but to Levi's credit he managed to put it behind him and have a pretty serviceable year at VFL level. Didn't dominate, but was solid throughout the season, averaging 1 goal per game. Takes a nice mark but needs to learn to use his big frame to his advantage a bit more often - bash a few packs open and announce his presence on the field. Went into the ruck at various stages throughout the season to get him into games, with varying degrees of success.

Levi will be kept for another season but is a fair way off it yet. There's a hell of a lot to work with, but he needs to be moulded from a lump of a kid into a footballer. Has a lot of hard work to do, but if he's enthusiastic and works hard at it, he'll give himself every chance. Looking forward to seeing him early next season and hopefully noticing a change in body shape from a kid with a huge frame, to a young AFL footballer.

Joe Dare
VFL seniors: 13 games, 0 goals, 1 best
VFL reserves: 1 game, 0 goals, 1 best

Solid if unspectacular season from Joe. Touted as going mid way through the national draft, he fell to our pick which many were happy with at the time. A running defender, his skills are very good as is his composure. Was a solid contributor throughout the season but never really stood out, however a few performances in the latter stages of the season will have excited the club a fair bit.

Is a solid footballer but may have been in danger of not holding his spot on the rookie list for next season mid way through the year. However, a really strong finish to the season will surely translate into a 2nd season on our rookie list. From there, it really is anybody's guess.

Joshua Donaldson
VFL seniors – 1 game, 0 goals, 0 best
VFL reserves – 8 games, 9 goals, 0 best

Haven't seen anything of Donaldson so perhaps this is off the mark but I'll give my thoughts anyway. Is well and truly a project tall, but may not survive the cull. Did reasonably well at VFL reserves level but was out of his depth at VFL senior level in the 1 game he played. From memory, had to fight through injuries throughout the season but kicked a few bags at reserve level.

Of all the rookies, I feel Josh is the most likely to lose his spot on the rookie list. The fact that he was marked as a project player may save him, but with limited spots on the list next season he may make way. I'm not really fussed on this one to be honest - would be happy to keep him for another season but wouldn't lose sleep if he was let go.

Zac Tuohy
VFL seniors – 17 games, 3 goals, 1 best
VFL reserves – 3 games, 1 goal, 1 best

With Zac, we have a keeper here. I have no doubt about that. Coming from a Gaelic background, his ball skills are excellent for a convert, and he has a fantastic physique for AFL football. Played as a medium running defender, he was inconsistent throughout the year but when he was on, he was a pleasure to watch. Loves to take the game on and go for a run, and has huge legs which he uses to roost the ball an absolute mile. Zac is still learning the game, so he still makes plenty of silly mistakes, but that's all part and parcel of learning and improving.

His disposal, especially by foot, is already AFL standard which is amazing for a player who picked the game up this year. His decision making and defensive skills are a little off the pace but I have no doubt that will improve with more experience. Unless he wants to go home, he'll be kept on the rookie list for another year at least, and it wouldn't surprise me if he played a senior game in 2011, such has been his rapid improvement.

International Scholarship - Peter Labi
VFL seniors – 1 game, 1 goal, 0 best
VFL reserves – 12 games, 15 goals, 3 best

Flaps was signed by Carlton in early 2010 as an international scholarship holder and he had a solid year. Played in the reserves and showed some encouraging signs, and he knows his way around the goals. Played 1 senior VFL game for 1 goal, but looked a little below that level at this stage. From memory, didn't play a whole lot in the 2nd half of the season, not sure why to be honest. Could have been injured, could have been just taking it easy on the directive of the club - someone that follows our VFL players more closely than myself may be able to shed a little more light on this. An exciting prospect, and I certainly hope we continue with him and put him on our rookie list as early as next season.

So, the verdict:
Promote to senior list - Garlett, Ellard
Retain on rookie list - White (nominated rookie), Cachia, Casboult, Dare, Tuohy
Unknown - Donaldson, Labi

Earlier in the year I recall someone from within the club making the comment that this is the strongest bunch of rookies we've had in quite some time, possibly ever. With that in mind, it comes as no great surprise that a case can be made for keeping every single one of them on the rookie list for at least one more season. It will be very interesting to see which direction the club goes in relation to the rookies. I think the 2 elevations are a certainty. Not sure if the club can only take 2 picks in the next rookie draft, so someone may need to make way (Donaldson the most likely IMO), but it will be very interesting to see how this all plays out over the next couple of months.

85 kgs. of ripping muscle is Donaldson.

I can't help but to see Ashley Macintosh in him and just a little sprinkling of Dusitn Fletcher.
We can only hope, but he sure is athletic.
Hope he has better knees than Ash

Donaldson is a great prospect...give him an injury free year and some more time to work on skills and he could be a very handy tall.

I'd delist Tiller, Wiggo (retired). Trade Bird, Walker and Sauce (looking enevitable) which should allow us retain the promising rookies and have our minimum draft picks.

Anyone else worried about Cachia's shoulders?

Anyone else worried about Cachia's shoulders?

More his skill level. From limited vision I'm not confident he's AFL quality. To that end I wouldn't be hasty in offering Ellard a spot either. Jeffrey is a given, Dare looks most likely for mine from the remainder.

Thanks, Jeremias, you've stolen my thunder completely. :):o;):) I agree with almost everything you've brought up. I'll just add a comment or two, in colour.
I was going to start a thread on this exact same topic a little later in the week but I'll just put my thoughts in here instead.

The Prince is a definitely on the senior list for 2011. He has signed all the paperwork. With a little luck he can keep up the goalkicking form, as he was pretty good even when Eddie had the yips.

David Ellard
VFL seniors – 14 games, 16 goals, 7 best

I'm fairly sure Ellard will be promoted. His end of season foprm was good enough to make it, and his workrate impressed everyone in the last 2 preseasons.
Not sure how long he will play for, but I'd be extremely shocked for Ellard not to be a part of the action in 2011.

Simon White
VFL seniors – 2 games, 0 goals, 0 best
AFL - 6 games, 1 goal, 0 behinds, 15.3 disposals, 7.5 marks

Simon came to the club as a more mature age rookie and was touted as being ready for senior football from the get-go. Whether White will be promoted will depend on what happens in trade week. If we get a few highish picks, he may remain a rookie (all be it, the 'designated rookie'). If we don't end up with many low picks we'll probably bite the bullett and promote him: he would be better value than pick 93 this year.

Jaryd did enough to stay on the rookie list, but not enough to get promoted. I'd be looking for him to burst out of the box next season. Another presesason, especially as it would be his first full one, would make quite a difference to the lad.

Levi will probably get another run. But needs to show more goals. If Jacobs or Hampson go, he may spend more time in the ruck. But, project player or not, he needs to do more in 2011.

Joe Dare
VFL seniors: 13 games, 0 goals, 1 best
VFL reserves: 1 game, 0 goals, 1 best

Joe was in trouble 6 weeks ago: struggling for fitness and not getting a game in the Bullants' seniors. Since then he has played his best footy for the whole year and shown why we were interested in the first place. He has a huge amount of development to do with his body, but his sure hands and attack on the ball impressed. He saved his spot, no doubt, but he needs a big preseason and a lot of gym time.

Like you, I feel Donaldson is the one in danger. He is very much a project player and in need of a huge weights program. However, he can jump over tall buildings in a single bound and kick the ball a fair way.
He struggled with injury and confidence. Get him right and we could still get a bargain. But his lot may also depend on how the trading goes. If we have a lot of picks in the 80s and 90s he'll survive. If we don't he may make way.

Zac is an international rookie, so we have time with him. However, he will be looking for a senior game in 2011. We may name him designated rookie.

International Scholarship - Peter Labi
VFL seniors – 1 game, 1 goal, 0 best
VFL reserves – 12 games, 15 goals, 3 best

Flaps was signed by Carlton in early 2010 as an international scholarship holder and he had a solid year. An exciting prospect, and I certainly hope we continue with him and put him on our rookie list as early as next season.

With Labi's development, he will be put onto the rookie list for 2011. From there he will have to perform. However, he hasn't even finished growing yet and may be a Jonathon Brown type yet.
It also means that our rookie list will be reasonably full. That could cook a few geese. But I think Labi has developed enough tob get a rookie gig.

So, the verdict:
Promote to senior list - Garlett, Ellard
Retain on rookie list - White (nominated rookie), Cachia, Casboult, Dare, Tuohy
Unknown - Donaldson, Labi

Got it from here:

http://www.afl.com.au/about/tabid/13532/default.aspx#rookie

I would be very suprised to see Donaldson given his marching orders after 1 year on the rookie list. He was drafted as a long term prospect and I expect he will be given at least another year.

Regarding Simon White, I'm part of the Carlton Coterie Club and he came in as a guest speaker before the Richmond game in Round 20. He said he'd had a talk with Ratten and would be a nominated rookie in 2011.

I hope we keep or re-draft Donaldson. Tall, athletic players don't come along very often and it would be a shame to get rid of him after one injury interrupted year.

I was curious about our rookie list players because I was excited by what they have to offer when we drafted them, and I think they can all develop into solid players. I hadn't heard much about them since the draft though, so I started a thread about it but was given the link to this one. Thank you all for you opinions on these kids, as I don't get to see any VFL games living here in Bendigo. This is what I posted:

I don't live in Melbourne so I don't get to see any VFL games, so I figured someone else might be able to offer some better insight. I'm very interested to see how these kids develop.

Jaryd Cachia is a tough, in-and-under midfielder, and I would love to see him on this team in a couple of years helping Judd and McLean win the hard ball.

I am really excited by the prospect of Levi Casboult. He's 198cm and 103kg, and he has been described as a strong overhead mark, an accurate kick and very quick for his size. I'm hoping as he develops that we may have a key forward on our hands.

Joe Dare is interesting. He's a mid-size guy who can play at either end, so he is versatile. I don't know a huge amount about him, but he seems like he could fill in at either end of the ground if needed.

I'm not really that excited about Josh Donaldson. He's tall and a nice athlete, but from everything I have read, he's very raw as a footballer.

Simon White was a great pickup for us. He came in and played senior footy with us, and in my opinion, he looked pretty solid. He has the size to play on key-position forwards, and he has great pace to keep up with faster players. I'm hoping that we get to see more of him in the Blues backline next season.

Zach Tuohy is someone that I know nothing about. I did read somewhere though that Tuohy was one of the most improved players on our VFL squad over the course of this last season, so that has to be a good sign.

I'm confused about what has been said here regarding how many players we can have on our rookie list. I think there is a limit on how many players you can have on your senior list, so hopefully we can promote at least three (Garlett, Ellard and White) and hang onto the others on the rookie list for another year. It will be interesting to watch because it will depend on how many draft picks we have, how many we use to bring in new players and how many guys get de-listed. All of that will effect how many senior spots we have available.
