Can he do it? Yes he can

Terrific article. He has shown that you don't need a complete clearout to rebuild. He's kept the main core of senior players who helped win the 05 flag and just made a few changes around the edges of the team. He copped a lot of flak from many supporters (myself included) for trading away Schneider and Dempster, two of our younger players, but their replacements in Moore and Mattner have certainly impressed in their spots. And young Jack, who has usurped Mathews's spot, is improving by the round and has added pace to a slow midfield.

what he done isnt really rebuilding, no one has retired yet, or dropped to sub par form.
give him 2 years then there will be a serious rebuild, just hope the players around the 19-21 year old mark can step it up in the next couple of years

Looking over the Swans list even though we all argee that alot of players will retire at the end of the 2009 season i think we have replacements for most of those players. Here are the guys likely to retire (or have already retired) at the end of the 2009 season

Leo Barry - Peter Faulks, Aaron Bruce (he impressed me when playing againt Hawthorn in the preseason)
Peter Everitt - Daniel Currie, Jake Orreal
Ben Mathews - Craig Bird
Jared Crouch - Kieran Jack
Barry Hall - Brendan Murphy (im hoping Paul Roos will make him a CHF)
Michael O'Loughlin - ?????????????

Jesse White and Heath Grundy would slot in quite well in either position here IMO

A replacement for Mick would have to be one of the elite goal kickers you can rely on to supplement the score and score crucial goals.

Any names come to mind? :p

Doesn't look likely does it. Our usual forward farming ground at St Kilda is looking pretty bare besides Riewoldt.

Roosy is the Master. He has reinvigorated the list. Biggest beneficiary is ROK as K. Jack is playing the mop up roll defensively this year allowing ROK to freewheel with strength and agility. This opens up space for MOL with Henry decoying and Hally adding the fear factor for our opportunistic crumbers. Masterful coaching.

I don't know. Kossie's looking like a positive, though his "issues" seem to be medical rather than behavioural. He's no MickyO but not a bad player on his day!

In terms of truly replacing Mick, the answer is he won't be. Not by anyone currently on the list and probably never. He's not the best player to ever play the game, and he's not the only player to be "unique" but I doubt we'll ever see another quite like him. His work at ground level for someone 6 ft 2 is quite extraordinary.

not sure on his height but i could see leon davis playin a role like mickyo as he gets older. he has a big strong body, quick off the mark and can mop up in the foward 50 arc.

and which players are playing games?
two of those players are currently playing, it takes more than 'these players can play' to rebuild. you actually have to get them on the park and show they can play and play the style of footy required of them.

living in melbourne im not goin to get to excited till i see some of these players hold their on in the afl. canberra league isnt going to cut it for me as a measuring stick

Leon is 178cm tall. That is small forward territory and you have to be damn good at ground level if you're that height. He's becoming a very very good player but he's never going to be able to play as a KPP - as Micky kinda does.

he could play as a leading forward if he could get good delivery. as it would be a toss up for a coach to put a good backman, someone around barry's height or go with a small backman and lose their run off the backline

Well...the only measure of Roos success can be a premiership and continuing success in the next 3-4 years. He' and his crew have chosen a certain path (and that's fine coz that's their job and they've been great at it in the past). But he has gambled the future wellbeing of the club on having another crack at it with this group. So I will reserve judgement until then.

I have to say that there is an argument that the "discovery" of certain younger players this year (this so called "rebuilding") has more of a look of good fortune about it rather than anything else. I wonder what would have happened if the best 25 (from Round 1) were all fully fit/available to play each week -as has happened in previous years. That is, I think injury/suspension has actually forced him to play some of these younger guys for extended periods. Thank God most of them have stepped up.
