Player Watch Rory Laird

Remove this Banner Ad

Laird will never be anywhere near elite.
Laird is elite.

His performances are comparable, if not better than similar style elite players in Cunnington, Libba and last year’s Lyons.

Yes, our midfield is currently not balanced enough, we lack elite ball users, but Laird plays an important role, and he is elite at it. With the exception of maybe Melbourne and the Bulldogs there is not a team in the league that wouldn’t be improved if they added Laird to their midfield.

200th game coming up this week.

You'd have to say he's the favourite for another gold jacket at this point, just ahead of Tex, Keays and Dawson.

This was my reply (back in 2015) to someone saying Laird reminded him of Edwards, two yellow jackets later suggest I was on the money - plenty howled me down at the time.

The skill side of things has dropped off a bit in his midfield role, doesn't quite have the time to dispose of the ball as he used to across half back - especially when we used to set up with the extra defender.

I’d suggest that Tyson Edwards was a better player than Rory Laird. If Edwards hadn’t played in the same team as A+ players McLeod, Riccuito and Hart and A-grader Goodwin he would have won several gold jackets, got a lot more Brownlow votes and averaged a lot more possessions. Nobody in the current Crows team is taking votes away from Laird.

Edwards is clearly better. Edwards was elite. Laird has never been in that tier.

In saying that, I think laird has been unfairly treated this year. He's an A grade inside mid who tackles like a demon.

Nice article on AFC about Laird hitting 200 games this weekend.

Weird para though that says he’s played all 17 games this year. Weird cos there’s been 19 games so far this year, plus Rory missed R1 with his broken hand.
19 rounds?

Edit : 20 rounds

Missed 2 games with his broken hands right?

He returned R2 for the Port game. We’ve had 20 rounds but that includes a bye so only 19 games, three to go.
Port game was round 3, Laird missed r1 and r2 with the hand and has played every game since. Can understand wanting to forget about the Collingwood game in round 2 though.

LAird has never been dropped. Edwards was dropped multiple times in his first 5 years. Gary Ayres turned him around to become the star he did. Laird has been a gun from word go.

Edwards had an issue in his first four years with falling over. 1997 grand final when on Winmar was a prime example in the first quarter Edwards gets to the ball first falls over for winmar to swoop onto it and kick a goal.

Lairdy has never had that problem.

Edwards is clearly better. Edwards was elite. Laird has never been in that tier.

In saying that, I think laird has been unfairly treated this year. He's an A grade inside mid who tackles like a demon.
Not sure I agree with this...I think their careers are comparable especially when you bring the quality of the players they played with into the equation.

Edwards is clearly better. Edwards was elite. Laird has never been in that tier.

Laird has multiple AAs (and club champions) to his name. Tyson Edwards has 0, and someone who isn't winning individual awards isn't elite.

Laird pretty comfortably wins any comparison of the two careers, especially as both spent a bit of time in defense.

I think that's a bit simplistic.

Not really, multiple individual awards (got to have some coverage for those who fluke a year) is really the separator between the elite/top of their position guys and those whose careers are stuck in the bottleneck of close to the top but can't quite crack it (and there is no shame being apart of that group, seeing there is a near endless list of quality of footballers by this point).

I think it requires a deeper look. Pretty sure one of Laird's B&Fs was in a spoon year where he was part of a midfield that included only Sloane, Matt Crouch and Brad who missed numerous games. Was Edwards ever not behind 3 genuinely elite mids?

Fair enough. I always rated Edwards up there close to roo, macca and Goodwin and thought he was underrated. Highly skilled, clean, smart, and courageous. Just had it all but wasn't flashy.
