WEST Coast midfielder Matt Rosa has re-signed with the club.

The 23-year-old finished the season out of contract and had been the centre of trade speculation given his Victorian background.

But the Eagles have confirmed that Rosa, who played 20 matches in 2010 to bring his career tally to 90, has re-signed in a boost for coach John Worsfold’s hopes of developing a strong young group of players.

“He needed some time to just think it through,” general manager of football operations Neale Daniher told afl.com.au on Wednesday.

“He’s re-committed to us and we’re just really happy about it.”

I know people are divided on Rosa but I think re-signing him is a good move

I'm happy about that because I think he's improved significantly over the past year and a bit.

But on the other hand it signals farewell to Stevenson. There's just no room to upgrade him now.
What, so now we basically have to delist Stevenson unless someone else goes?

How many picks do we have this draft?Do we still need to de-list more to have 3-4 actual picks in the nationals draft?

Here's my analysis from another thread.

We only have to make a minimum three changes, which includes rookie upgrades.

Having said that, I suspect that we would use picks 4, 26 and 28 (or upgraded picks), take Brennan with a lower pick, use pick 1 in the PSD and promote Strijk, Wilson and possibly Stevenson. Which is seven or eight changes.

Two of those changes will come from putting Glass and Cox on the veterans' list. Two more have come from delisting Wilkes and Notte. Spangher and McKinley will be gone one way or the other. That's six spots.

The other one or two spots will have to come from trading Rosa and/or paying out guys that are contracted - Hansen, Nicoski or Jones.

That leaves no room for taking on players in trades, but I honestly don't think we'll do that anyway. There's no decent players left available, and I'd rather not take on other clubs' rejects when we have enough of our own.

With Rosa signed, in order for us to use four ND picks (including a late one on Brennan), and pick 1 in the PSD and promote Stevenson we would need to "retire" two guys who are contracted.

For salary cap reasons I can only see us paying out one contract, to give us the PSD pick.

That's assuming we want to use a PSD pick

On topic - happy with the signing. It's one of those ones where you doubt if he was ever going to leave and it was really just leveraging for a better contract. I wonder how long he signed for - you'd think 2 years would be about right.

Fantastic news. So glad we re-signed him rather than offloaded for a second round pick like some special kids were saying when this came about.

Technically, we only need to use a single pick due to having upgraded 2 rookies in Wilson and Strijk. However we have a priority pick 26 and a normal pick 28 which I am pretty sure the Eagles will want to use.

We've currently dropped 2 senior list players and the upgrades/vets list changes cancel out so currently we are 1 list space short of using our 3 picks and 2 short of retaining Stevenson.

Those left under the chop are: Hansen, Nicoski, B Jones, McKinley and Spangher.

Seeing as BMac/Spangher have asked to be traded, we should have enough. Did I miss someone? Seems too easy.

I think I'd probably prefer Stevenson than the PSD pick. Still, I'm confident they'll be exploring every way possible they can retain him.

Rosa was going to be one of the players who would be worth more than we could have got for a trade.

I'm happy he's staying - really noticed his pressure went up this year.

First noticed it ina pre-season game against Carlton - and then was highlighted when he pantsed Bateman.

What a joke. We are going to keep playing a bloke who is nearly past the 100 game mark purely on the basis of potential and because he has played nearly 100 games even though he has done bugger all except turn the ball over in most of them.

You can't keep playing people after 100 games of mediocrity just hoping it magically turns around. It reeks of desperation and clutching at straws. Either the bloke was no good to start with and you should never have invested those 100 games into him or you rdevelopment system and the environment at the club failed to get the best out of him. Eithe way it's time to move on. But the odds of somebody who has been thoroughly useless for his first 100 games magically and instantly becoming something decent is very, very slim. Better off manning up, cop the loss on the chin and getting on with it by investing in somebody else rather than praying for miracles with a total crab like Rosa.

More of John and Trevor's "Big changes" and "Aggressive approach at trade week and with the list". The decisions these clowns are making now is condemning us to 5-10 years in the wilderness.

It's not going to come down to Stevenson vs a PSD pick.

If we delist Hansen or Nicoski before the national draft, their salary for 2011 counts in 2010's cap, which could very well push us over. For that reason we waited until after the national draft before delisting Stenglein last year, giving us a PSD pick.

If we don't use pick 1 in the PSD this year, it means we've got all of Hansen, Nicoski and Jones on the list. If that happens we're going to need backup mods to deal with the carnage around here.

I realise the last season or so has been painful to watch, but you can't just ignore it.

Your view of Rosa is clearly stuck in 2008.

Actually, Rosa has improved a lot this year. So your slim odds actually are already wrong :thumbsd:. He needed too improve and he did. Obviously he wasn't happy with the contract put forward so he like Lynch took a while to accept.

Very, very poor post GM. :thumbsd:

No

- Notte and Wilkes from main list = 2
- Trade Mckinley and Spangher = 2

Total 4 players off main list.
I would suggest only 1 of the 2 above would be a player swap (A.Krakour) and the other would be a late 3rd or 4th rounder which we wont use anyway.

Our picks will be 4, 26 and 28 thats it.

Happy with Rosa re-signing. I think he was good this year, and will keep improving. If he held out for more money, hopefully that is a little bit of incentive to prove next year that he was worth it.

All this talk of how few spots we have makes me only more confused about Jacob Brennan - it just doesn't make sense. If he's best available at 44 (or whichever our third round pick is), then we should pick him. If he's not, then we shouldn't.

If I've misunderstood the equation re Brennan please let me know, I'm really hoping I have.

Here Here :thumbsu:

Pretty disappointed with Rosa re-signing. He won't improve much beyond his abillity now as a half decent outside mid and plus we would have got a pick around the 30 mark for him. The fact that we probably will lose Stevenson is just crap news. Agree with GM, John and Trevor are to blame for our wilderness footy and the wildnerness is a huge hole that might take us another 5 years to climb out of. The Bombers made the brave move in moving on their dud coach and will improve drastically next year whilst we will still be bringing up the rear with a red mark from another spoon. Another year with Hansen, Nicoski and Brett Jones on our list is enough to give me nightmares again.
