Can never be sure, it is just a leap of faith. Bond has often alluded to the "list management model" and I think they have finally learned that the draft is the best avenue to getting quality players. Our recruiting staff is miles better then the Saints'. Instead of recycling dud players our recruiting staff can find suitable replacements in the WAFL, SANFL and VFL. Alex Silvagni was playing right under their nose and his uncle was an assistant to Ross and he would of been much more important to them then any of their failed pickups.

Very good points. I believe they have the 'list management model' correct. There is just no way they would dismantle the recruiting structure/model they've got working. We have found some gems, there is no denying that and Lyon would be crazy/blind to not recognize that.

I actually think it's probably one of the reasons Lyon came on board in the first place.

If Freo make top four next year, then with free agency and the decisive way in which we've acted, the club will become something of a magnet to uncontracted players.

If it works in the short term, the long term benefits will be huge as a result. Simply sneaking into finals is not good enough.

Agree 100%

It's balls on the line stuff for everyone involved. The club needs to win finals, not just make finals. Consistently.

Harves has been at the club for 6 years now without a lot of success. I have no problems with Ross Lyon as he has coached a side into 3 Grand Finals. It's just how it was done and they way it was done and handled by both sides.

The supporter back lash could really hurt the club as far a memberships go.

I wonder how the players feel about this? Anyone heard from Pav?

This is far worse than when Bomber walked out on Geelong last year.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I remember one of the commentators, during one of our matches, saying that our recruiters were some of the most professional if not most in the league.
Can't remember who is was but was one of the guys that has a lot to do with the under 18s.
This could be the catalyst for great things.

My first post now the shock is wearing off and I've had a good laugh reading through all the threads yesterday. I almost started a new thread but I'll put my 2 cents here instead.

Player reactions? For me this will be a big factor in how I feel about the dealings once it all settles down.

With the level of secrecy its probably safe to say that the players, possibly barring Pav and a few others?, didn't know any more about it than Harvey did. I know there's a certain amount of professionalism and the players shouldn't expect to choose who coaches them. Also we'll probably never know the full story once the team gets briefed on what they can and should tell the media.

Still I'd be really interested to know if there was any feeling that something like this was needed or if there are going to be some very unhappy players about today.

Ok so it's not about them being unhappy, I just hope that by this time next week everyone at the club is back focused on training and 2012.

Was Tom Harley.

What are people's thoughts on possibly getting Dempster to fill the role of either a shutdown small defender or tagger? I know Clint Jones has been mentioned, but Dempster followed Lyon to St Kilda, and had an impressive year in 2011. Would be an interesting option given our inability to deal with small forwards this last year.

On the Game Plan last night they had a link to Tim Gossage and he said the Pav is currently in SA fishing and has no idea what has happened.

Yeah we used to be a complete no shows when talented young players were training/playing/interviewing/tryouts/whatever. We just didn't have the resources (specifically, the people). Now there is pretty much no chance of Fremantle representatives not being around when there is something to be seen. The difference is like night and day.

Not according to his Twitter.

Enormous day!!! Let's talk more about it in the morning.

What would Pav say anyway? He's one of the most socially aware sports people on the planet.

Fan: "Hey Pav, great game yesterday!"

*Pav makes phone call to PR company*

Pav: "Thanks for your support..."

*Pav makes another phone call to PR company*

Pav: "...champ!"

I really hope that's a convienient alibi :), like I said in the end they're professional players and will probably do their best for whoever coaches them but I'd be much happier to hear that there was some feeling that a change was needed and not that the players were fully behind Harvey.

I agree.

Not only do I see this as a strategic move in the short term, it's also a strategic move in the long term.

With freo-agency, it will suit someone like Lyon, and we may look attractive to a lot of players. It will also limit rebuild times.

The club has been very pro-active with someone that has had a penchant for looking over mid aged recruits.

With extra resources, I think this sort of strategy will be exactly what is needed.

Very cluey.

The players certainly wouldn't have had any knowledge of Ross Lyon coming in but the senior players would have been asked their opinion of Mark Harvey's strengths and weaknesses and if they were the same as those of the footy department and board Harv's was in trouble. It's also possible that the change was player driven.

Anyone think there may be in any way a player revolt? It could be a concern considering the immediate instability in the club..

Well media reports indicated there was a lot of finger pointing amongst the playing group.

Yea, I could see half the team rolling away in their wheelchairs or throwing their crutches at the board in disgust.

But seriously, I doubt it. Some may be a bit unhappy about it (particularly the younger players that would have only had Harves as a coach), but overall I think they'll take it in their stride and it will all settle in over the next few weeks.

Something along those lines, but I doubt the players were very much involved in the particulars of what went down and would have been anticipating another year with Harvey.

Given what was said in the interview, clearly the club were looking to replace Harvey at the end of 2012 (as I thought was the case), when Ross became available now. They figured better to cause a bit of pain now and end up with their man rather than have a circus next year and end up with a nobody.

First of all I think that Freo have made a tough but good decision appointing Lyon and I have a question.
As Fremantle supporters what are your expectations of your team now with Lyon at the helm for next season and over the next four?
