What we have just witnessed is Lyon's ability to get his players to buy into his philosophy... yet again. Maybe he is better suited to coming in when a squad has developed, rather than a rebuild. But you cannot deny what he brings to the table.

Hawks start as favourites, but it will not surprise me if Freo wins next week.

Attack sells memberships, defence wins premierships.

Lyon is a gun for hire IMO. He was brought in to take our squad to the next level. so as much as I admire what he did and still does, he was never the kind to spill blood for the club. He was there to do a job and did what he thought had to be done to complete the job. Job done in many respects, he moved on.

Will be interesting to see what his replacement will do. Given the state of our list, I think he is on the right track for sustainable long term success.

Sorry to intrude,do you blokes think if Lyon was a fraction more attacking you'd have won a flag.it seams at freo although he's still got that defensive mind set and manic attack on the footy he's a fraction more attacking .i think he just wouldn't budge on his game plan at the saints and maybe with your good big forwards just didn't attack as much as he could have.just a thought.

i'm not sure it was the attack.

first grand final was accuracy in front of goal
second grand final we were probably just missing a classy outside player and one more fwd target away. peake was absolutely useless in that game. imagine having jack reiwoldt in that side or someone like a side bottom. instead we had mcqualter and eddy.

agree about 2009. I remember we used to wallop teams. But 2010, Collingwood just took it to a new level. We were lucky to get a draw to be honest, mainly thx to BJ and Lenny.

Under RL, 95% of our senior players improved their game & were able to get every bit out of their ability..
Can work wonders with "an experienced" list..

Unfortunately the same cannot be said under SW, his strength lies with developing younger players confidence & attitude..

I believe next year we'll see our younger players make greater strides, as we once again strive to slowly build a formidible list for a crack at the top 4 in 2017/18..

Our elite players in 2009 were better than Freo's currently are, the difference is that their bottom 6 players are infinitely better than our bottom 6 were & at the end of the day, that is why they've made it this far in only 2 years

I would also say that Freo bought into the gameplan a lot faster than we did because we were able to show them it worked. Much easier to believe in something you've seen work (Freo 2012-13) than it is to buy into something that no one has seen before (us in 2007-08)

And that is probably why we never won a flag since 04...

Our top 6 were as good as nay, but we fell away after that. when they fired we won. If you look at Cwood in 2010 and freo this year it's more about eveness across the park.

Sorry, but it's the way he went about leaving that pisses me off, he had a year to run in his contract the club had come to terms with his management on an extension and he fielded offers behind our back and his management whilst we were in the middle of a finals campaign and cost another contracted coach their job.

Our poor list is partly his fault as he did nothing to improve it long term, he had no back-up fullback and then he enticed our only fullback to follow him.

How many on here have ever gone to their boss and said I am leaving because I need money or have a better offer... before they talked to another employee?

People do it all the time, but just because it happened to us, we all have to have a sook about it. For centuries, people have lined up another job and then resigned. at least he has been consistent. Always said he was a career coach. This may not make some supporters feel all warm and fuzzy, but heck me, the players were behind him 100% and that's all that matters.

Had it been the other way around and he came to us from Freo, we'd be saying what a top bloke he is etc etc.

That's what happens when admins lose their spine and worry moer about who the coach might be pissing off. Lyon was ready for a rebuild and flagged his intentions to stay by asking for a longer deal. The club blinked and the rest is history.

Even if he doesn't win on Saturday, he will have still proved what a bunch of dicks our club can be.

The club did not stuff him around, he was still contracted for the next year and the club had completed negotiation of a deal with his management after the end of the season, which Ross had signified his agreement to. Ross however had been dealing with Fremantle behind the club and his managements backs, the club and his management negotiated in good faith, Ross didn't, If anyone stuffed anyone around it was Ross stuffing around the club and his management.

Remember the press conference had been organised to announce his re-signing not his resigning!

SPOT ON - the club had a chance to secure him and it didn't . We had an out inserted into his contract but he ended up using it on us. Mercenary he may be but he has a family to look after so I see no problem with his decision.

However his failure to develop youth and Luke Ball I cannot forgive.
