Rude as well as narrow in vision. Of course your rant was on Lyon and the fact that he was god like as a coach. The list of others coaches achievements, was to bring you back to reality. Lyon was and is a good coach, but at this stage is far far from a great coach. Is that too hard for you to understand??

Gee I wasn't aware Nettlefold was CEO when those great coaches were plying their trade.

Is it to hard for you to understand that on Nettlefolds ' watch ' he failed to keep St Kilda's higher winning % coach who took us into 4 consecutive finals. Stop raising an unrelated line of BS

Good article in the Hun today. David Parkin reckons that Lyon did a massive job to get us into 2 GF's given the holes in the list at the time.

Holes? In 09/10? The only hole talked about was speed, and perhaps goal scoring ability (which was more game plan than personnel). Does he mean the thinning of the list? Because except for those bottom 4 or 5 in Peake, Raph, McQualter, Eddy who contributed eff all on GF day twice/three times, the rest were a very very strong side. Midfield super, defence solid as a rock, attack was probably behind the other 2 lines in terms of strength but still more than good enough on their day.

No, we did have holes in our list when he took over... Hence why he topped up the list. Our problem has been for a while that we needed our top 6 to play very well in order to succeed. If they didn't or were shut out, we'd struggle.

So he took what he had, topped up with bit parts and created a game style to maximise our strengths and mask over our weaknesses. No big deal.

Meh, going direct into a GF can have its own problems IMO. We lost what, 3 Prelims before we made the GF? Freo have not yet felt that pain in order to develop the hunger.

Then again they might win and I look like a goose and Lyon a genius.an.

I'm not convinced Lyons game plan works particularly well on the wide grounds. He is great at getting people to follow a game plan to the letter but if the game plan falls apart when you get the MCG then I'm not sure I would rate him as high as everyone else seems to.

I'd be very interested to see the win/loss of Lyon coached teams broken down by ground width. 4 groups: sub 129m, 129.1-135, 135.1-140, 140+.

Freo played 4 games this year (3 during the season and the GF) on grounds 140+ and lost 3 (2 to the Hawks 1 to Rich) and the one they won was against the Demons.

He makes the finals very regularly but he has been parachuted into 2 teams that were full of serious talent. Who knows if another coach would have had better results.

I hope this finally puts all negative feelings about Lyone leaving to bed. We all have to face the facts that his "gameplan" based on defensive structures, extreme pressure that drains players, counter-attacking and role players will simply never beat the best in the business at the big dance. Freo had better pray that they make it back next year but with Lyon at the helm, it will be really unlikely that they will be able to overcome the best team at the G.

Don't believe that anything about that gameplan is simple or easy, it's not an unlucky coincidence, it's collateral of the taxing style.

Yep. His style only works on little grounds . Try playing chess on a board with 20 extra squares . That's what it's like when a Ross team plays at the mcg . It's too big . Isn't as good as it seems.

He'll always do okay with a team he coaches if they buy into his taxing gameplan because, let's face it, 18 blokes applying maniacal pressure all the time with a coach who has them knowing where to position themselves means you will win more games than you lose. Unfortunately for teams coached by Lyon, it becomes clearer and clearer with each grand Final loss that, while he has the ability to get his teams far with that gameplan, against the very best when the pressure increases and opportunities must be taken his gameplan falls short. It may be his teams are competitive in a GF but any win that might come from a team he coaches playing his style will be extremely lucky coming down to the flip of a coin.

I think it was the Hawks' game to win. They just had more experience than the dockers. It was reminiscent of the '09 GF.

I think Freo will be a big chance for next year.

Freo overachieved this season. They're a finals quality team, but a soft draw got them into the top four, and the first two finals were against rather weary opponents.

They're still a bit off the mark. Hawthorn were flat as anything today, a competent team would have minced them.
