It's hardly a time to gloat. We all know the pain of a GF loss. Freo came close and played well. It was very much one on one in the last quarter and a half from what I could see. As for his game plan, well it clearly works at the MCG as we showed, losing only on uncontrollables. Will be interesting to see how Freo go next season. Pav a year older but showing power forwards are casualties of no whistle grand finals (a bit like Mitchel having no head, next or face in the first quarter). Fife a year more experienced which is a scary thought.

Freo overachieved this season. They're a finals quality team, but a soft draw got them into the top four, and the first two finals were against rather weary opponents.

They're still a bit off the mark. Hawthorn were flat as anything today, a competent team would have minced them.

Fair comment IMO.

Big boo-boo subbing off Clarke, should of moved him forward, hawks gave them an extra tall effectively

I'm beginning to think we almost won 2 flags in spite of his game plan not because of it.

His game plan will get you into Grand Finals but doesn't seem able to win them.

Is it because the mindset is not losing instead of winning? Who knows?

They certainly looked like they needed another target inside 50 in the last.

such is life.

Expect to see Ross coaching Essendon next year... career coach and all that.

If Ross Lyon lost the prelim last week none of us would be dubbing him a failure. He did extremely well to get Fremantle into the grand final. Odd to see him cop it for doing objectively better than a prelim loss, something that would have been seen as a magical fantasy at the start of the year.

Ross' game plan IMO does not work in super high pressure games at the MCG, as it does not allow for ANY errors in play, goal kicking or in luck. The MCG is too wide to adopt a defensive-based press, whereas Hawthorn have an offensive-based press which allows for minor skill errors because they always have numbers near the ball (their short chip game). The amount of times a Hawk skill error resulted in a ball up was numerous today, yet the amount of times a Freo skill error resulted in a scoring shot was plentiful.

Ross somehow needs to tweak this plan even further to make it work on the MCG IMO, make it become more attacking without taking too much away from the defensive side of things

I thought the same when he was our coach, and he went and tweaked it the other way.
No doubt he believes they conceded too many goals today.

Sorry Sauce This is the perfect time to gloat. The mercenary fled to Freo who saw that his coaching and game style would deliver them a flag. It appears that it is no better than when he tried it with our list. Will only be improved if they also lose back to back.

On the highlighted bit that first quarter and a half from Freo was about the worst Grand Final performance I can remember. They were abysmal. Hawthorn weren't even that good. Our performance in the first quarter of the replay was also poor but Collingwood were up and about that day.

The fact that they played so poorly when it mattered most will sting for Lyon and Freo. At least after 09 he and the fans knew we were very close but they served up some really ordinary football for a whole half today.

I'd also be asking myself, if I was a Freo fan, why they came out in the second half attacking with a different structure compared to the first (as in, why couldn't they play with that more attacking structure from the start). They almost won the game with a burst of 20 minutes. As a fan of a team coached by Lyon, those sort of things drive you nuts. A great winning % against the poor teams or the good teams when the have an off night (see Sydney last week) but a flip-of-the-coin, albeit "competitive" performance against the best when it really counts.

Great post. The problem with the highlighted is that, on the evidence we saw today, the problems his Freo side face are almost identical to the ones we faced after our GF losses so he obviously has either disregarded the lessons learned from those losses or, and ths is the most likely, he is incapable as a coach to tweak such an incredibly rigid gameplan. The one-trick pony description of him looks more apt than ever after today.

Todays game proves to me that Lyon still has no Plan B. With us once teams figured us out we were finished, is he simply banging his head against a brick wall hoping to get a different outcome? Or perhaps aiming for the record of most grand final losses without a win.
All he needs to do for next year now is recruit Raph Clarke and he will be all set for another crack at it.

I'm experiencing some major schadenfreude right now.

Suck shit Ross you money hungry w***er, and Zac Dawson that is the worst game I've ever seen you play which is saying something. Luckily for Zac and Ross Ballantyne that little f'wit played so so badly they might be glazed over.

All in all, I feel sorry for Pav but otherwise sucked in Freo :thumbsu:

12 points at halftime. Think it would be best if Ross didn't make GF's anymore. Yeah it was close bla bla bla but that wasn't a great spectacle IMO, though Hawthorn did their best to make it look good.

Wasn't it great to see that overrated little brown stain shown up in a game that matters.. Showed everyone exactly the type of player he is..

So now we are all experts on game plans? Funny how we convince ourselves and see what we want to see.

Freo were lucky to make the GF. Their list is still young. Like us in 2009 they came up against a champion team, which I might add had more star power acroos the field.... Hodge, Mitch, Gibson, Roughie (career best form), Buddy, Burgoyne, Gunston, Breust... the list goes on. Not to mention the collective finals experience of both teams when compared.

Freo won a PF against a depleted, but spirited Sydney outfit. Even Geelong's form tapered off late in the season. as painful as it is, there is no shame in losing to arguably the best and most consistent team over the entire season.

Let's at least be objective about this without letting our childish anti-Ross sentiments get in the way.

Be fair Don't deny those of us who want our anti Lyon moment :)

Rossy must have nightmares about his players missing easy goals in Grand Finals.
Cost us in 09 and Freo couldve had the Hawks players sphincters tightening if only they kicked straight early.
Nat Fyfe funny game, brilliant and terrible at the same time.

Ross Lyon doesn't coach skill errors!

I just wish that the umpires were as quick to call full jumper holds on Schneider in play as they are to call insignificant shoulder grapes away from the contest on Pavlich. Oh well.

Or maybe even not just taking Tom Hawkins word that it was a goal when it clearly deflected off the post.
