Jarryd Roughead will step down from the role of Hawthorn captain in season 2019.

Roughead, who took the reins from predecessor Luke Hodge at the start of the 2017 season, said he felt the time was right for a new leader to take on the role.

More about what Roughy says in the article below.

Cheers Rough, a fearless leader and it takes courage to walk away.

It's time for Shiels to step up and show us what he can do. Never a dull moment at Dingley Waverly

Thanks for taking on the captaincy over the past two seasons, Roughie. Wouldn't have been easy taking over from Luke Hodge while returning to full fitness after missing 2016 due to cancer and then having his position in the team questioned by all and sundry.

Whomever is named captain will be able to lean on Roughead for advice and support.

Roughy puts the team first always and is doing so once more. Love you Roughy!

Gunston has to be the next captain. Shiels seems too quiet and Issie maybe a tiny bit too much of a larrikin for the role. Gunston speaks and acts like a leader and would definitely be suited for the step up.

Please no with Tom Mitchell. He’s an accumulating beast and should stick to that - I don’t want to see him bogged down with the captaincy. Leadership group - absolutely. Captaincy - nah.

Edited the poll to include Gunston for all those that may have voted Other in regards to Gunston can now please change it from that to the new Gunston option.

If it's not one of Smith or Shiels I will be shocked.

Given Smith stood in for Rough this year ahead of Shiels I'm thinking he's first in line, but Pup may get the nod

This is the right call and Rough is not guaranteed best 22 next year.

I think it will be Smith. Good age to take it on for 2 years and then hand over to O'Meara.

Personally I would support co-captains of one of Smith/Shiel/McEvoy with O'Meara. The senior guy to do all the media stuff and let O'Meara focus on training/onfield stuff. But I know co-captains are not everyone's favourite concept (including Kennett's) and I don't think the club will go this way.

Been a good captain, but right time to hand it over. Needs to be burden free for his own game and therefore the team.

I personally don't see any obvious captaincy choice. Mostly due to the fact of it impacting someone's own game.

Cannot by Gunston. Has too much to do. Back, forward and all over the field. Needs to have a clear head.

Smith? Have seen Smith disappear from a bunch of games over the last few years.

Shiels? Maybe. Can see him doing the job, but is he a little too quiet for the job? No idea.

Others...

Mitchell? possibly.
O'Meara? too soon, re: body and consistency
McEvoy? dunno
Stratton? probably not.

I reckon the Jordan Lewis decision was a costly move. Would have been ideal as captain over the last few seasons and the next. Just my two cents.

I just don't see him not in the best 22. Such a versatile player. Reckon the doomsayers are a bit ahead of clock.

Rough did a superb job as captain: lead the team from the front.

I think Gunston will be the next Vice-Captain but for all I know Stratts will replace Smith/Shiels in a vice-captaincy role.

Co captains? I dunno which Hawthorn you support but Co captains will only happen over Clarko and Jeff's dead bodies.
