despite a turbulant off season and in all likelihood a long and frustrating year, im feeling pretty good about the team we are assembling moving forward.

IMO There are 2 major holes that need to be filled; we need a rebounding half back general (hodge, goddard, drummond type) and a key forward. A fit Jarrad Waite is capable of playing both roles although i think he is best suited to the CHB role. Gibbs could also play the rebounding role although i think he's too good to not be involved in centre bounce clearance work. In summary, for us to be the best team in the comp, we need Waite at CHB.

This leaves the key forward post a biggest deficiency. Im sure behind the scenes, g swan and co are working at landing a key forward. J Roughead would have to be the first choice, with m pavlich another option (his age might be a factor although i beleive he's still got 4-5 really good years left)

forward line including: Henderson, Yarran, Betts, Robinson, resting midfielder (murphy, judd or gibbs) and pavlich/roughead would be balanced and impossible to defend with the amount of quality ball our midfield is capable of producing.

As exciting as Ohalpin is, i dont feel he's premiership player material.

lets throw everything at getting either J Roughead or M Pavlich to carlton. I would be happy to overpay salary and at the trade table to get the deal done as the quality power forward role is our missing link.

comparisons with the bulldogs only strenghten the arguement for a need for a quality power forward. Geelong is an example of a team that acheived success without one but they happen to have 2 of the best small forwards in the history of the modern game (chapman and johson) which will be almost impossible to replicate.

he's 27. thats the reason i said roughead would be the first option.

at 27, pavlich was got 4-5 good years in him (barring a major injury). Hall is running around as a 33 year old and making an impact

wihtout doubt the younger player is the better option. However, over the next 4-5 years our team will be hitting its peak and i think pavlich could offer us a lot if roughead isnt available.

He is 28 & will be 29 in Dec.

As Sin said, let's worry about the new season before we discuss any potential trades which occur at the end of the season.

After watching the sydney, brisbane and adelaide games im pretty concerned about the calibre of our forward line. I hope as the season moves along we improve in that area and im proven wrong but i feel we are going to struggle.

nothing wrong with thinking about the future. i didnt realise talking about ways to improve our list was confined to trade week.

I think we develop what we've got.

I disagree with the OP that Carlos couldn't play in a premiership side. An astute mate told me the other day he saw a bit of Duke in the Irishman, and his form pre-Fev-crash last year was top line CHF stuff.

We don't know how good Hendo could turn out to be, and the same goes with big Levi.

The chances of yoinking a Roughead or Pav away from their current side, especially when the GC or GWS could offer them more $ than we could, are next to FA.

hope you're right JUB, would love to watch this current team develop into a premiership unit.

i suppose we'll know more about Setanta by the end of the year- he will be given every Opportunity to develop in the CHF role this year. His form pre Fevola hit was good.

I'd still take a 29yo Pavlich in a heartbeat.
This.

Aker is still a mouth, but he's been a great mature age recruit for the Dogs and a matchwinner.

Hall is still a gun when he's on, so athletic talls can play on longer than one paced in and under mids.

Yet Pavlich has none of Fev's, Hall's or Aker's issues.

I'd ban myself if Pavlich joins Carlton. :p

Roughy for mine. A big strong forward to work in tandem with Henderson inside 50 is a mouthwatering prospect, although the chances of it actually happening are remote at best.

As for the rebounding defender, I wouldn't mind seeing how Marcus Davies develops over the next 12-18 months. Of course Gibbs could do it, but we'd be better served having him in the middle. Even Yaz could play HB with his sublime kicking skills, however, even though his workrate has improved significantly, i'd be a little concerned if he had to actually play inside D50.

At the beggining of the year i feel our foward line may struggle a bit but towards the end of the year it should click and start working. Also i expect to see year foward we have have a great game and then go missing for a while and this is how younger players develop. This doesnt worry me. We dont need either Pav or Roughead. We can make do with what we've got and watch them improve together.

exactly my point. once our team is on the verge of something special, mature age recruits are sometimes necessary to fill holes.

Geelong have done it with ottens, hawthorn with dew, bulldogs with aker and hall, Saints with Gardiner and pies with jolly and ball. For mine, the area of the ground we need to do this is in the forward line.

although much more dificult than in previous years, i dont think it will impossible to land a big fish this year. it will come down to how well the club can sell the "next carlton premiership dynasty" to the prospective player.

lets hope by seasons end henderson and ohalpin have shown enough and there is no need to top up the list. if not, club should do whatever it takes to get the player we need.

i think you're forgetting they've got boom recruit wayde skipper to the club to address that issue.

going all out for burgoyne and overloooking jolly is a decision that will haunt the tassie hawks for years.

Pav on Blues radar: Swann

I seriously think we need another elite midfielder with elite foot skills, before a key position forward. What we have now will do, but you can not have enough elite kicking midfielders.

Hendo, Carlos, Waite, Yarran, Robinson & Betts will cause havoc if the ball is kicked to them with precision. :thumbsu:
