So now that we are getting through the post 2010 season, and looking forward to the 2011, what are your thoughts about round 1?

Line up, crowd, result???

FB: Garland Frawley Bartram
HB: Grimes Rivers MacDonald
C: Sylvia McKenzie Scully
HF: Petterd Watts Bennell
FF: Jurrah Green Aussie
R: Jamar Jones Trengove
I: Dunn Moloney Davey
S: Morton

As for the crowd - against Sydney at the G, I would hope 45k!
And the result, well lets hope for something similar to last time we played them, although I don't think we could do that well again. I'll go with Dees by 23.

Your thoughts?

With the match on the same day as the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, I don't see a big crowd at this game.
I'd love to go, but the F1 is only in Australia once a year, so it gets preference.

Melbourne by ~30 points and a crowd of 30k

That's a pretty solid 22, Eskimo. I'd have Rohan Bail in my side though. His run and carry really gives us something I think. Whose spot he takes, I've got no idea. I wouldn't write Bater off either. Forget his 2010 season. Injury ruined his preparation. Judge him on next years output.

anyone know whats going on with Max Gawn?? the next sandi??

it seems the hype has settled
Well he came back from injury only to get injured again. Reports from preseason state that he is definitely a massive unit. Whatever he does in 2011 will have little bearing on whether he will be the next Sandi or not. Injury free and some time in the Casey 1's would be perfect for next year.

Your thoughts?
Your can't be suggesting that Davey and Moloney aren't in our best 18 but Jones is?

Emer: Dunn, Macdonald, Bate

Spencer to play well in NAB cup and secure a round 1 birth. Wona with an interrupted preseason not fully firing in time for round 1. Maric with impressive preseason form getting the spot over Bate and Dunn. Watts lucky to be in ahead of those 2 as well as well as Howe, who provided some NAB cup highlights. Morton gets another crack at Goodes. Jones plays a few good practice matches which combined with the need for endurance grabs the last spot. Bail is the sub due to his ability to play back, forward or on a wing. The rest of the team practically pick themselves.

Crowd - 37,591

Result - Sydney by 13 with the dees continuing a run of horrible round 1 performances. The side gets shuffled around and is back firing the next week.

I don't believe there is such this as a best 18 anymore. It's a best 21 (stupid sub rule). With rotations the way they are, everyone gets maximum game time anyways. It's not like they sit on the bench for most of the game only to come on when someone is spent.

Davey has shown he can't handle a tag very well, so I think starting him on the bench will help him get tagged a little more loosely, especially if we can swing the rotation as a surprise. As for Jones over Moloney - well when Jones was played as a "see the ball get the ball" player this year rather than a tagger, he impressed me. His disposal and decision making improved out of sight, and I'm hoping he can take another step this year. Just feel it's time for the club to put some faith in Jonesy. If it doesn't work then it doesn't work, and it's not really going to hurt us much, but if it works out, then it's a good result for the next 6 or 7 years, opposed to Moloneys 3 years he might have left.

Also, I would have loved to have squeezed Bail in, absolutly love the way he goes about it! Bail, Strauss, Blease, Tappy etc all chances to steal spots throughout the year, but until they prove themselves (and they might do that before Round 1) I have others ahead of them.

I’m not convinced we need to play 2 specialist ruckman. I'd rather we play Jamar one out with Dunn giving him a chop out as required. He gives us more flexibility being able to play multiple rolls.

One thing is for sure, the new rules give Fitzpatrick a massive opportunity. If he can take a big step forward then their will be ample opportunity.

I'd rather play Jamar and a backup with flexibility. But I can't include Dunn in those options. For mine he would get smashed by anyone with any idea how to ruck regardless of whether they are a ruckman or not. I just can't see him as big enough to do more than 5 minute spells.

So if he's improved I say for round 1 lets go with Spencer and not tire Jamar out in the first game of the season. Jamar can also play a lot forward which gives us a weapon. Sydney will play 2 rucks as well so Spencer should battle with Pyke, where as playing Dunn would really hurt our chances in the clearances.

Agree on Fitzpatrick, as well as Martin and now McDonald. No doubt it's the reason Newton was kept on the rookie list as well. It really wouldn't surprise me if Newton was lining up in round 1.

18 on the field, 3 on the bench and one in the rooms, the sub. Can be exchanged with one of the starting 21 at any time of the match, but this cannot be reversed.

Some great line-ups there, difficult choices. Unfortunately, not all those players are going to make it through inter-season without injuries. Look at last year, where we had 9 players out for Round 1 (including Sylvia, Jurrah and Morton).

Some places are going to open up, perhaps for the likes of Blease/Tapscott, even one of the draftees/rookies.

Re: Max Gawn

I stood next to the guy and felt short. I'm 195cm tall. He will dominate, just needs the years and exp. Look how long Jamar took. I believe Gawn could surpass.

Will Aussie be right to play Round 1?
i hope so, but if not give Howe a shot as a sub and Morton to the forward line..

So if a small forward isn't right replace him with a tall. Don't worry about Maric, Jetta or Tapscott as options.

It's overused at times but there is such a thing as team balance.

Tapscott had hip surgery hip surgery let him notch up his fitness send him to Casey 1's for a few weeks to get his confidence up again before exposing him, i wouldn't think Maric will get a game and maybe Jetta could fill the spot. Was only a simple suggestion. :o
