Essendon kick off their VFL campaign against reigning premier's Werribee, a good test for the young Dons. Essendon had a busy off season, adding several important players including the recently delisted Dominic Akuei from Carlton and Tyler Sellers from North Melbourne, whilst Williamstown have added Lachlan Gollant from Adelaide and former Lion Carter Michael to their playing list as well.
Essendon won two of their four practice matches, struggling against flag favourites Box Hille on their most recent game before round 1, but sandwiching two wins in between the first and last game. The big question mark for the Dons will be where the goals come from in this game with Nate Caddy now entrenched in Essendon's best 22 and Peter Wright's injuries, a lot will fall on Tyler Sellars and young gun Kayle Gerreyn up front.
Williamstown won all three of their pre-season games, comfortably accounting for Werribee in their final tune up game to show their quality and be one of the premiership fancies alongside the likes of Box Hille and Gold Coast. Their defence is probably the weakest area of the ground on paper so it'll be interesting to see how they go back there.
I think it'll be a good match but the Seagulls probably have a bit more polish than the Dons, so Williamstown by 22.
Possible Essendon side:
FB: Angus Clarke - Will Hoare - Jayden Nguyen
HB: Zak Johnson - Dom Akuei - Saad El-Hawli
MF: Luamon Lual - Jackson Hately - Jack Peris
HF: Archer Day-Wicks - Tyler Sellers - Alwyn Davey jr
FF: Rhys Unwin - Kayle Gerreyn - Jye Menzie
OB: Todd Goldstein - Will Setterfield - Xavier O'Neill
IC: Jared Eckersley - Oskar Smartt - Hamish Sinnott - Nic Quigg
23P: Noah Scott
