Anyone who says Crouch didn't have an impressive pre-season didn't watch either the Freo trial, or the Carlton game. If they gave out Brownlow votes in pre-season games, he would have been in them v Freo and was arguably best on. He was in our top 8 or so v Carlton.

Now there may be a lot of reasons he is not playing this week, and I'm not going to go off half cocked, but his pre-season form should not be one of them.

Also, the "structural reasons" theory is a load of garbage. If Crouch is in there instead of Jaensch or Martin, it just means juggling the team around a bit. If they wanted to pick Crouch, the team structure wouldn't have stopped them.

Mate your an excellent poster. How would you suffle to fit him in ?

So VB to play a role he has never played before? Brave I will give you that.
VB has played defence before. He's played as a tagger as well which means he knows how to stick to his man. Besides, DMack and Smith hadn't played defence either before they were tried there, either had Hendo.

I consider VB one of our midfielders if he wasnt play midfield we wouldn't miss. He's obviously got to be in the side, I reckon he would be a natural for HBF.

I have never seen VB as a running half back. I think your putting square pegs in round holes for the sake of it.

There was a tweet this morning (don't know how to link them here) from @AusSport that Dangerfield has the flu and is in doubt for tonight...

Rumour hasn't gathered much steam, and the tweeter has not responded to requests for a source, so I'm not too worried yet. Something to keep an eye on though.

Hmmm...

Gee Vader i thought Martin and Jaensch were not even close to our best 22 and should have been delisted?
They're not, they're depth players at best. The fact that they were deemed to be amongst the best 22 players available might go some way towards explaining the woeful performance of our midfield on Friday night..

I still can't understand how either of them could possibly get selected ahead of Crouch.

Highlights our lack of ball carrying speed without Smith.

Shiny new toy wasn't picked round 1? Throw out the rattle!

Welcome to BigFooty.
It's not so much that he wasn't picked, but the fact that there were several dubious selections ahead of him (particularly Jaensch - and to a lesser extent, Martin) which a sane person would be hard pressed to justify. If we had our best 22 available, with Callinan & Smith forcing Martin & Jaensch out of the side, then I wouldn't have a problem with Crouch being omitted.

But how could they justify selecting a team with Jaensch included, but Crouch excluded? It's beyond comprehension.

Well the fact Jaensch and Martin didn't play in the midfield should tell you something.

We lost because our star midfield was terrible (Jacobs, Danger, Thompson) and our senior players coughed up easy goals with horrible clangers (Rutten, Reilly)

Martin actually gave us some run when he was subbed on and Jaensch didn't concede a goal and went at 93% disposal eff unlike any of his team mates. They had nothing to do with the loss they did their job. The big guns and senior players cost us this one. If you think Crouch would have dragged us over the line you are deluded.

Jaesnch didn't conceed a goal? Must have been watching a different game.

i think were all overrating smith a bit. he played well last finals series but he hasn't really tore a game apart. were all looking to him to be a savior to our defensive ball movement, but he won't be. we require a lift from everyone back there. this is not to say smith won't be very good in the future, but right now we need to pump the brakes.

IMO, his development is on par with Dangerfield.

Where he is right now, he is equal to Dangerfield at the same point. Hopefully his improvement mirrors that of Dangerfield in 2012 but I don't think he's too far way from ripping a game apart.

If Smith had a chance to play on the wing he'd have a much better chance of ripping a game apart

I would have thought Crouch would have played too - but is line ball with all the players you mentioned - not clear cut, beyond comprehension.
