Williams being blamed for that Larkey goal line mark is a prime example of how blind posters hatred can be.

That goal is 90% on Barrass, he was right there with them both and for some reason decided Williams should defend Larkey while he came over the top.

How often do you see the key back choosing to come over the top and let the ruckman defend?

Probably would have been fine but the ball fell short, Barrass was out of position and it became a Williams and Larkey 1v1.

As the senior player he has to take the responsibility there.

And no I’m not excusing his game but that particular moment he is not the one to have the majority of the blame.

"I still cannot phantom the abysmal performance by this man" poster grammatically, but love the passion.

I think we will possibly be able to infer a fair bit from this weekend. Simpson, the players and the club have been copping it all week in the media, both in WA and over East. The supporters are pretty disgusted with last weeks showing. If they come out and play this weekend without a massive lift in intensity...
They had the whole off season to stew over how rubbish they've been last year and declining every year for 4 years.

One would expect that in the first game they would come out breathing fire. And not capitulate at the first sign off things being a little hard, which has been the case for 4 years.

Only to turn it around after a half time allmighty spray.

In nearly every single game of the last 4 years, it's a "yeap we've learned from that".

It's a 4 year body of evidence to say that they are not getting it and never will.

Complete list turn over required. We are so starved of any semblance of potential in youth that we circle jerk each other when someone gets 15 posessions, me included.

Sorry, that sounds so depressing.

I chalk it up to miscommunication. One of them needed to take the body, the other kill the ball. The blame doesn't lay at either of their feet more than the other but between them they should've been able to get it done

It’s not a four year body of evidence. Four years ago today we were about to kick off the 2019 season as reigning premiers.

2019 we finished a game and percentage behind top spot, won a final then lost a semi by 20 points.

2020 we finished percentage out of the top four then lost an elimination final by a point.

The second half of 2021, all of 2022 and one round of 2023 have been diabolically bad, and this is as low as we’ve ever been, but there’s no need to gild the lilly and say this has been going on for four years. That’s simply not true.

2019 we hardly played a 4qtr game all year.

We'd pull a herculean effort in for a qtr and a bit but flogged in the midfield remainder of the game.

At the time most were calling it, doing what we had to but wait for us to turn it on.

It was there for all to see in 2019.

We won 16 games that year.

They won only three of their first six games, losing by greater than 40 points to the Brisbane Lions, Port Adelaide and Geelong, placing the Eagles 12th on the ladder at the end of round six. They then won 12 of their next 14 games, the losses being to Sydney by 45 points and to Collingwood by 1 point. By the end of round 21, West Coast had been in the top four since round 14, and were aiming to finish in the top two. They then had a disappointing six-point loss to Richmond, and a shock 38-point loss to Hawthorn at home, to finish the season fifth on the ladder.

This does not even come close to describing how inconsistent we were in each game, for the majority of the games all year.

I'm not of the opinion Simmo has been there too long. It's a loveless job coaching a team through a list transition and development phase. We need a seasoned coach who can deflect player criticism, absorb club criticism and create a sanctuary to nurture talent.

So many coaches get turfed before the list build is finished because of media and supporter pressure. This often seems to kick the can down the road and the next coach is gone within a couple of years.

Simmo may not be head coach when we make finals next or really challenge for a flag, but while we stock up on youth and have delicate conversations with legacy players hanging up the boots, I think he's better suited than any alternatives to be in the role. Could be why he ended up getting another year at all, as the club realised the position it was in and how long it would take to turn around.
I'm here for the long haul (like I have any choice or say in the matter?), but would prefer to see steady progress towards a bright future than more of the same 'Edge Of Tomorrow' shtick. If things don't change up, I'm good for Simmo to be gone by years end. I can't recall exactly, isn't Simmo now about in the same zone as Woosha, when he was gracefully 'retired'?

Miguel Sanchez is done.

You've been comprehensively outpointed.

2019 we were the best side in the league playing with fire in regards to effort and intensity.

It has gotten worse since then...much worse, whatever the apologists want to spruik.

This is going back to the days when half on here were complaining that we didn’t boost the percentage enough by holding onto those 8+ goal leads and winning by 3-4 goals and the rest were well we won what are you upset about..

It was only after we dropped that last game and dropped out of the top 4 on percentage that some realised how important playing 4 quarters actually is..

To me it was the start of the drop of standards as the coach was of the “ oh we won” group and percentage doesn’t count.

Was the start of the excuse era which led into the 2020 hub debacle and we have been an excuse after excuse club ever since.

We bottomed out in 2010 and picked up the likes of Gaff and JD. I'd say 2022 was the equivalent for Simmo. If in 3 seasons he hasn't continued to develop the list or show sustained improvement then yes he will be gone. I don't even think it'll take that long. I just don't think he'll be gone before the conclusion of 2024. West Coast don't waste their $$, and for the reasons I've stated previously, I think the club like Simmo for the role of taking the hits until the new crop are ready.

His preference would be to get rewarded with delivering a flag with that crop but even if he doesn't, his aim is to better the club's list moving forwards, not be looking over his shoulder and playing for wins to protect his job to the detriment of the club transitioning. That's the benefit of giving him that extra year, and I suspect why we did so, and probably even kept it quiet instead of saying we wanted Simmo to steer us through a rebuild.

This is starting to stray from changes vs GWS. Nonetheless;

The point of “yes we’ve let percentage slip today but stop being so miserable” was one day we’ll be dogshit and you’ll really have something to be miserable about.

Well, here we are. And…miserable.

Percentage cost us top four in a few seasons, nobody was denying that could happen at the time, but nonetheless we were percentage out of top four. Now we’re being told we’ve been dogshit for those seasons as well. Nah. We were good, not elite, but very very good, and you all hated it so much.

And now that we’re undeniably terrible, clinging onto the smallest semblance of optimism or future prospect, we’re all still miserable.

Almost like the message of “enjoy the games that go well but not perfectly because pretty soon they might go terribly” was somewhat close to the mark. 17 teams ‘lose’ every season. If you’re miserable throughout all of it just give up the hobby.

I am all for prioritising youth, and i am not bagging him or saying he is going to be no good in the long run, but i thought Chesser looked like a deer in the headlights last weekend and contributed nothing. There is a case for letting him have 3 or 4 WAFL games to get some confidence back before throwing him into the big time.

We probably don't agree on a lot but Chesser hasn't even played WAFL yet. Stepping straight up to afl after 5 games in 4 years is just ****ing stupid no matter how good you look on the training track. He needs a good run in the WAFL before getting a start.

Hewett isn't ready yet, he's not consistent enough in his effort, run from contest to contest and quarter to quarter.

I still firmly believe we are best off having Sheed on one wing and Kelly on the other. If that means that until Yeo and Cully are fit we have to play SPS, West or Clark inside then so be it.

Also Exxon is just not an AFL level player. He's just a step off making it. Too good in 2-3 years time for WAFL/VFL but not good enough for AFL especially in a competitive side. Foley isn't making the side at the moment and with a pretty settled defence it'll be hard for him to make it but when watching the two of them play (both from the same draft) it's quite easy to see that Foley at least has traits that can make him a good afl role player and he is most likely to be delisted at the end of the year. Exxon just doesn't have a single AFL quality trait and he like a lot of others just slows the play down. (Foley btw was very good on the weekend both offensively and defensively)

I'm going to run with the Assumption that Yeo and Nicnat don't get up but Culley does and try and be realistic in regards to numbers of changes.

Out: Witherden, Williams, Gaff, Exxon, Chesser
In: Hough, Culley, West, Waterman, SPS.

Waterman plays the utility as both third tall forward and second ruckman. He might be a limited player but he can play that role and is at least hard at the ball and the man.

Petro stays sub as i'd prefer the youngsters to get full WAFL games.

Jones and SPS to both play some time inside, Sheed and Kelly take the wings the whole match.

Yes it's a big call dropping gaff but to me the game has gone past him and it's about structure as well. Play Kelly and Sheed to their strengths for **** sake. Kelly is not the inside mid we've been looking for. Both sheed and Kelly are better at stoppage clearances than centre ball contests where they can get on the move a lot more. Yes this is putting a lot of pressure on Culley and Ginbey and it's a ****ing sad indictment on our inside players but at least those two won't be bullied by anyone.

I miss the bearded god as he just can't be replaced but **** this team really misses Redden, we really could have used him for one more year even if it meant going back to the rookie list to give us the main list spot we were chasing. Would have really helped to fill the void on the inside and helped the youngsters coming through.
