Roast Round 3 post game rant thread

I'm just going to repost what I posted on TLC http://www.limboclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72690&page=287 - you get to read the swear words there ;)

Last night's Essendon-Carlton game was one of the worst AFL games I've seen in quite some time, it was just a ****ing terrible game. Essendon were awful, Carlton were atrocious and umpires seemed to have suffered from a chronic case of Soozitis.

**** some of the skill errors would be unacceptable in a Bacchus Marsh-Sebastopol reserves game.

If there's worse game in the AFL this year then I don't want to see it. :thumbsd:

Individuals spraying the ball out on the full
Individuals not confident enough to take a set shot or go for a mark
Individuals not digging deep and being accountable
I know what you are saying but fingers do need to be pointed - in every direction it seems

O.K. so I had to get it off my chest, but I've just been wishing for us to let our players play to their abilities.
It just looks as though some of that is being stifled at the moment and I'll tell you why.

a.
The long kick is truly out of vogue for us.
The amount of those soft, delicate Houlihan type kicks 20 mt. passes to a contested mark type situation worries me.
They're fine when the intended kick is for someone 5 mts. in the clear but what is there to gain from such short passing to almost 50/50 type situations?

b.
Watching Essendon's game simple game plan unravel us last night was disappointing for me.
I saw our boys giving their all last night.
Some may disagree but the efforts on field were quite good overall.
A large part of the poor execution emanated from work around the boundary line, trying to be too cute by way of those horrible soft kicks that lack any penetration.
I'd suggest that this is more by some game plan type scenario than by natural execution.

c.
The corridor.
This is my one singular hate of what we are doing and not just from last night.
This was the case last year as was in the first game against Richmond.
We just don't use it.
Why? I don't know and am happy to be corrected by someone that understands proceeding better than I.
We virtually hand the corridor over to our opponent every game.

A subjective observation:
We seem to be not allowing our players license to follow their instincts and by default seem to be harnessing their true value.
(e.g. There was a moment in the third quarter I felt compelled to applaud Warnock for marking the ball, doing a 180 turn and immediately handballing to the noise of a fellow player.
It did not come off, but I was glad to see a little instinct type football being tried.)

I'm certainly not a Ratten basher as the pieces WILL start to come together but after a year and a half I'd just like to see a little more balls being used by our coaching staff and not falling back on those defeatist terms that have been used of late.
You know the ones: Stalling Tactics, Tempo Control etc.

p.s. Can't wait for Judd and Bower back next week. :)

Sorry, Harkmanistan, that is utter garbage. So many disinterested players going half pace, standing off the action, kicking lazily, not helping mates. I'm waiting for the whispers to start about something not right going on at Visy.

Just on that, Walker was not a very happy lad, I must say.
Gave Thornton quite a mouthful at one stage and wanted to blame others for his failings, but then again he really shouldn't be taking up a Bower type role either.
Thornton seemed rattled at times and that may have come by way of team mates rather than the opposition.

The contest was quite willing at times and McLean was clearly labouring, but by far and large most players put in from where I sat.
Where did you sit?

Addendum: Gibbs looked lazy, or ill and Houlihan was, well Houlihan and Melbourne beat Adelaide.

Yeah, our players tried, to a degree. I guess a better way of saying it is that our players weren't nearly as committed as the Bombers, even Ratts thought this.

Posters tend to blame the coach's strategy, OR the players. Probably a mix of both:

Walker being played completely out of position, Waite playing in a position he's never really excelled at, match strategy to run the boundary against the Bombers who played the corridor and I may as well stayed home and watched Groundhog Day. As for the players, there were a number of times we sat back and just let the Bombers get the ball first or gave up the chase too early - the responsibility to chase and go hard at the ball isn't the coach's job, professional players should just be doing it.

well perhaps there were a couple of players who were not up to their best, but i think the set up and total lack of tactical nouse from the coaches was more of a problem. I know walker has been mentioned a couple of times, but why in hells name was he being played on Gumbleton - i actually thought that match up was extremely unflattering to Walker (he did seem to try hard but what the hell can you do when you are giving that kind of height away? Bad for his confidence too) and as such more a testament to the bewilderingly poor coaching approach than player skills. It would have made MORE sense to swap Jamison & Walker (ie walker on williams & Jamo on gumbleton). ALso, why on earth was McLean played at all??? Apparently he was carrying a back injury? Hadley was named in the emergencies so clearly he was fit and available. And, why was Watson allowed to roam free for so long? Last night has unfortunately left me wondering if Ratten knows his a#se from his elbow.

Typically sides are having a good go when they win the tackle count and win the clearances? I thought we won both.

Gameplan :) stinks

Now that's funny, you should say that.
Had the same feeling myself which steered me into a world of make believe as I couldn't believe when we know what the opposition has in mind we play into their hands.

I may just sound like a bitch today and it may be only for today, but we must learn from our mistakes.
Trust me: The players looked confused and worked against one another.

With players of the quality of Judd, McLean, Murphy, Gibbs and Simpson in the centre, why on earth do we head for the boundary line first?
If it is under instruction then the instructions aren't good. It's as simple as that.
I'd sooner see us bomb into the forward line then try and finesse around the boundary

Side issue: For anyone wanting to drop Yarran, you just didn't see all the running and chasing he and cohort Betts did last night

Houlihan is a disgusting player. What good are 'silky' skills when :

1. You are slow and are always caught
2. You exert no pressure on the opposition and play with the endeavor of a pansy, the flower not type of person, week in week out. Opposition players must laugh with joy when they have to line-up on Houla.
3. You only play with any decency when the rest of the team are up
4. You have all the leadership qualities of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo!
5. You have played for 10 years and are still as good as you were 10 years ago?

He should get a job as a Chippendale since he seems to enjoy running around in his dacks so much, the useless drongo!

Carlton probably believed their own hype and overestimated their ability after Brown's superstar performance saved the Lions from being overrun.

Lazy.

Same problems as last week.

The opposition just take the ball through the middle without any pressure.

Oh yeah, blame Walker for the midfielders, flankers and wingmen not pushing back so our defenders have one out contests against giants. No one leads hard and shepherds to give him a ****ing target to kick withmore time.

Only Kreuzer leads hard when we clear the ball from the backline.

Same problems as last week.

No structure and a game plan that Fremantle used to beat these pretenders.

If we had Williams kicking for goal, we might have knocked them off.

We didn't take our chances.

We find a way to flatter them and Kepler Hooker who finds a way to kick straight to Carlos who was ten metres away.

Off topic: We are absolutely killing it in volume of posts today.
Have the mods any idea on the record for a single day? :)

It's all been a little too serious here today, and I haven't been fun at all either.
Going home to a great meal, a wonderful wife and will look forward to next week.

Over and out.

Lets face facts:

Getting rid of Fev was a dumb move. Not only was a good footballer but he bought back that old Carlton arrogance

Ratten is the worst coach in the competition

We hardly have one quality big forward

Aside from our number 1 picks, we have drafted poorly

McLean was a stupid trade. He is slow, fat and injury prone

If we had any brains, we shoyuld have traded Walker last year. He will have little value at the end of this year

Henderson will never make it as a key centre half forward

Jamieson is our only skilled key defender

We rely on Murphy, Judd and Gibbs with the odd cameos from the likes of Simpson, betts and a couple of others

Bullshit. Been done and dusted in a number of threads.

FWIW, we haven't had a second round pick for the past three years.

You exclude our 1st rounders and that only leaves third rounders onwards.

McLean was a stupid trade. He is slow, fat and injury prone

Did you watch the first two games of the season?

Jamieson is our only skilled key defender

Dont rate Bower and Waite?

This thread disgusts me FWIW. I truly wonder why people bother watching the football when they clearly hate not only our coach, but also many of our players, our president and our recruiters.

Such bitter tripe.

Re: Not Happy!

Disgracefuk coaching, not accountable football by any one, a lack of body on body, players played out of position like Walker at CHB. Stupid selections by not picking a tall defender to replace Bower (White), dumb decision making and shocking skills. Waite was appauling, couldn't catch a cold. Goal kicking remains disgraceful.

with every statement wrong I assume you are extracting the urine

God his snap for goal was pathetic.

I'm not sure I've ever seen such a poor shot, in terms of desire.

Before he even kicked it he looked like he didn't give a shit, and then he treated the shot like it was some half-arsed attempt at the end of a training exercise.

Thought the same thing.

We have no forward line structure. We did but we gave him away for being nothing more than a drunken dill. Sounded good for some off-season but now we don't get the 4 points reality bites. We made our bed and now have to lie in it. We did have a choice with Fev. No problems with losing Fev per se but why get rid of him without a contingency plan. Put us in a big poo. Despite what we thought of him he could turn sh1t into gold. Not only that we felt we were going so good for talls we didn't feel the need to draft a KP forward. That now bites too although a KP forward would take a couple of years. Be handy in a couple of years though when you look at the side now.

In hindsight, if the Bingle thing came out whilst he was at Carlton, he probably would've been delisted - we should be thanking our lucky stars that we got such value out of him knowing that we had that little skeleton hanging in the closet - make no mistake, the AFL wouldn't have allowed Fev off the hook if he was still in Victoria.

Fevola didn't bring anything Carlton back - since when have we been a one team player like he made us, teams in the 70s and 80s had few superstars, and even fewer 'look at me' players of the ilk of Fevola.

Our arrogance was never that of the individual, but that of the team.

It really was disgraceful...what is wrong with that boy...

Do something
