Surprise!
Well, I thought I'll start this one b4 any1 else!

In my opinion

In: Ackland, Goddard, Peckett
Out: Rix, Voss, Fiora

Goddard does well against fremantle and should return. Fiora should go atm as his form hasn't been the greatest. Peckett will probably do better.

Ackland should be a given spell - hasn't done much in the last few games and is not on an improvement trajectory. It's time for Rix to debut. We need some height/skill to match up on Sandilands.

Other than that, we're seriously tested for depth. Raphael Clarke and Leigh Fisher desperately need to get up and going (which is unlikely, considering limited pre-season). Powell is struggling to touch the sherrin and Fergus is out for atleast the next 10-14 weeks. Brooks and Murray - the lesss said the better. McGough will be McGough.

Reality is that for top 22 player material - the only players in our reserve atm are Goddard & Peckett. It drops away quickly after that due to injuries/form/experience.

How about no on Goddard, Ackland and Peckett. These 3 can stay in the reserves for my liking.

Not much depth in the reserves unfortunately, i'd leave the team unchanged and work on getting Fiora, Montagna, McQualter and Shwarze playing exciting consistant football. These 4 are pivotal to our september chances as all 4 can bust a game open with there pace, good foot skills and ball winning ability.

If Kos is back out again this week, then bring in this Rix fellow everyone keeps talking about. Throw him in the ruck and see what he's made of as our 2 current ruck options couldn't be any worse and at least he'd have a lot of upside.

:)

Ackland played vs Port and Rix didn't

I think Axcellence meant:

In: Rix, Goddard, Peckett
Out: Ackland, Voss, Fiora

My opinion is that Voss's form doesn't warrant dropping him, he is a vital component of our team. Ackland was woeful and hasn't yet played to the levels he did last year, and Fiora had a bad night.

I can see Ackland and Fiora being dropped for Goddard and Rix (or Brooks).

Kosi copped a corky and may or may not come up for next week.
Ball had a good run and will be better for it.

Maguire had a shocker (he hasn't looked good this season yet).

Gram was busy but still needs some work on his decision making.

Clarke was brilliant running through the lines and in attack, but his last line of defence work was appalling. Same with McQualter, he was good in the midfield but he doesn't have the strength or the size to match it in defence.

The coaching needs to do more work on their match ups, some were ridiculous.

Yes... still, I am worried about the depth.

Injured:
Kosi
Gehrig
R Clarke
Brooks
Watts

Exp/Quality lacking
Fergueson
Gram
Blake (for the ruck position)
Rix
Murray

Newbie
Gwilt
McQualter
Raymond
Sweeney

Out of Form
Voss
Ackland
Fiora
Powell

However, to note Schwarze's form was good in the last game. Still, it means we have a lot of work to do (esp for 1-2 weeks due to injuries).

And thanks Stkildonan for fixing that muck up I did.

its time for rix to get a game. there is no point drafting a 25 yr old if you wont play him. voss is our 2nd best defender. he will get back to his usual form. gwilt was good last year when he played so why is he not playing.
i know people are saying ball isnt injured but i think he has OP. being someone who has had it before the thing that stood out to me to maybe him having it are. 1) no penetration in his kick, and 2) didnt have his exploding pace off the mark.
i think we have some big worries in the near future especially with freo, geelong and the dogs all coming up. thought?

I don't know about you guys, but I am feeling quite insulted at the moment. Reason being the inclusion of Ackland. Here you have one guy who's struggling to get a kick... what do you do? Do you let him go to VFL to get a touch and his confidence back? Nope, you put him back in against the biggest ruckman with hitouts 2nd only to Dean Cox - ensuring he has another bad game and ends up so far down that he can't come up.

Is this stupidity at the highest level or what?

However, I do note that Gilbert is included - Blind Freddy can see our backline will be undersized against Fremantle otherwise. Going on past experience, I expect him to play (eg McQualter). Query being whose going to be dropped? On form alone, it'll be Voss.

Voss will not be dropped. I can guarantee you that.

Ackland SHOULD go but common sense rarely prevails at saints HQ.

I was under the impression Gwilt was included, not Gilbert.. If it is Gilbert, he can go back to the reserves for now. If it's Gwilt then i'd include him.

So we need 1 to 2 more out.

Well Murray definately not!!

So that should do it!! Emergencies: Gilbert, Ackland, Murray.

If however it is Gwilt then Emergencies for mine : Ackland, Murray, Goddard.

:)

Ps. I very much hope that the selectors have some forsight and retain Fiora. He has the ability but needs a good wipping to keep his mind on the job. We really need his run. Prehaps before the match and during each quarter break the whole playing list can give him a spray to him focused. Montagna after last week may need to join Fiora in his wipping as well.

So blake does all the rucking Ron?

Goddard will play, no question about that - his best games come against Freo. Last time we had Penny with that match saving defensive spoil. Who will play his role? Gilbert will play for sure (4 talls in the backline). Gehrig's playing if fit.

Which means 3 changes - doubt Schwarze / Milne (leadership group) / Gram / Montagna / Fisher / McQualter being dropped.

Which means Gehrig for Kosi - leaving two players to be taken out. One can be Fiora, leaving the other spot to come from Thompson or Voss. Take a pick.

We get killed in the ruck anyway.

Blake can interchange with Maguire when needed who would actually be perfect.

The ruck 'team' to be instructed to just provide a contest and our midfielders instructed to rove to our oppositions ruck taps.

That's how i'd coach it and that's what happened last week against Port pretty much with Ackland being pretty much useless. At least Blake/Maguire will rack up possies around the ground

This is where we need Ferguson included as another semi tall defender. Still i have full faith Fisher/Hudghton can keep Pav and Mcpharlin quiet.

:)

I really think that Saints HQ are f****d, how can you keep Ackland, not bring in Rix, and name Gilbert over Gwilt?
We need new selectors, I dont care how much i get bagged for saying that. Its bullcrap, we will NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER, NEVER, NEVER win a grand final with *******s like that around the club... If i was a selector i would make us line up like this......

B: Gram, Hudghton, S. Fisher
HB: Voss, Maguire, X. Clarke
C: Baker, Hayes, Montagna
HF: Harvey, Roo, Schwarze
F: Milne, Gehrig, Hamill
RUCKS: Rix, Dal Santo, Ball
INT: Goddard, Thompson, Gwilt, Blake
EMERG: Ackland, McQualter, Fiora

When you get to see Gilbert play, you may be pleasantly surprised.
He's going to be a star.
He still needs to build up a bit more, but will play this season and will be a cool addition to our squad.

Within a season or two, we'll be wondering how we managed without him.

The team for Sunday is confirmed.

IN - Gehrig, Goddard, Murray
OUT - Koschitzke (Inj), Ackland, Fiora (Omitted)

Like most of you I'm pretty bemused by the selections. Ackland deserved to be dropped but surely we had to keep him in for another week or replace him with another ruckman. How we can go into a game with a 189cm ruckman alone against a 211cm giant and an out of form but talented partner like Justin Longmuir is beyond me.

It's good to see Goddard back in the team and I'm probably not as critical of the Allan Murray selection as most of you. I saw him play a lot of footy last year and it's too easy to pigeon hole him as a player that is great at VFL level but not good enough in the seniors. There's enough talent there. My question mark over him is his fitness and work ethic but you would hope he'd realise that this is his last chance to make an impact and cement a place in the side.

The only thing I would have done differently to our selectors would be to replace Ackland with Rix instead of Murray.

So what were you guys saying about Voss and Fiora being dropped?

If i was any more spot on in this thread it'd be scarey!!

Everything said by you guys was WRONG by the way.

:)

Blake did do all the rucking with Maguire helping out.

Actually _Ron_ that post was not in sarcasm mode at all.
It was a comment after the dropping of Ackland and no replacement ruckman.

PS I've never advocated Voss be dropped. Fiora was dropped but included after Hamill was omitted. He is very borderline at the moment. He doesn't seem to have the confidence of the coaching staff. He was only given minimal game time against Port.

PPS I see you've not mentioned the good form of Goddard and Murray, both of which you would have dropped.

Is that so about Fiora?

Remind me again how Baker scored his point? or how Voss got one of his goals when we were down and out? to name just 2 incidents.

Do you seem to forget me mentioning that even though Murray is a disagrace as a player i still factored him in for a 5-10 possie game and prehaps a goal? Now i said this pre match somewhere in this forum and remind me again what his stats were. Also of note, Murray got game time in the middle and also note he still played like crap like the vast majority of the team.

Goddard.. Was he even playing? Ok that's tongue in cheek but yeah Goddard played a blinder for the star he is reputed to be. Not one turnover yesterday!! Must be a special day for him!! He may have been helped by the fact that the Freo players were tagging/tight checking all our good players which may of exasberated (sp?) Goddards influence.

:)
