Round ball code talk

Maybe AFL coaches could take note.. Less defence/numbers around the ball, more attack would make it a lot more exciting to watch.

AFL seasons always start out attacking and high scoring before the coaches of the shit teams realise they suck and their only hope is defending and nullifying the opposition.

MLS, anyone?

I barrack for DC United, which is having its odd-year offseason. If anyone here follows American roundball, I could chat about it!
Not really but yes DC United for me as well. Current coach, and past player, Ben Olsen spent time at the City Ground playing for Forest.

Ooh ooh, Ben Olsen

UPDATE:

Final scores:
Cruzeiro 1-0 Grêmio (Cruzeiro 3-2, SO)
Flamengo 1-0 Botafogo

Finals will be between Cruzeiro and Flamengo.

---

Grêmio's dreams of a repeat ended up in the semifinals. It is the second time this season that Grêmio is eliminated in a PK Shoot-Out (first, in the state league).

---
---

The Second Leg of Brazil's Cup semifinals happens tonight.

In Belo Horizonte, Cruzeiro hosts Grêmio (1st leg: Grêmio won, 1-0)

In Rio de Janeiro, a local derby, diegodcg's Flamengo hosts Botafogo (1st leg: 0-0)

If the aggregate is tied, the first tie-breaker is away goals. If the tie remains, the series go straight to shootouts.

---

For context:

a) In the Brazilian league, after 21 rounds, Grêmio is currently 2nd; Flamengo, 5th; Cruzeiro, 6th; and Botafogo, 10th.

b) Grêmio and Botafogo are in the quarterfinals of Conmebol's Copa Libertadores (they play against each other, actually). Libertadores is the South American equivalent to the UEFA Champions League.

c) Flamengo is in the Round of 16 of Conmebol's Copa Sudamericana (the equivalent to Liga Europa).

In Benny we trust! :-D

Aussies down 2-0 in Japan. Now have to rely on the Blue Samurai to do the right thing next week against the Saudis to give them a chance of automatic qualification.

I watched the first half last night and nearly fell asleep

What a boring, one paced, skill deficient display

If that's the peak the sport can offer in Australia, we don't deserve to be in the World Cup

So in our group Japan have qualified. Both the Saudi's and Oz have 16 points but the goal difference is +6 vs +4 respectively. Next week on Tuesday Oz play Thailand in Melbourne and we will have to win by at least 3-0 and probably 5-0 to be safe to get qualification. But the Saudi v Japan game is played about 7 hours later in Jeddah. The Saudi's will know what they have to win by and the Soccerroos have to hope the Japanese play for keeps to win or draw and at worst only lose by a goal. Japan's only loss was 1-2 against UAE in Japan last September.

In the other group Iran has qualified and S Korea are on 14 pts Syria are 3rd on 12 and both have a +1 goal difference, and Uzbekistan are on 12 pts but -1 goal difference. on Tuesday Uzbek's play S.Korea at home and Syria play Iran in Iran.

Haha if Socceroos finish 3rd they could be playing Syria for the right to play the North American CONCACAF 4th side for the final qualifying spot for Russia. I hope we dont have to play in Damascus. Just checked, Syria have been playing their home games in Malaysia.

Vale Mike Cockerill. This is a bloody shock. Always enjoyed reading his stuff in the SMH and listening to his calls on SBS and Fox Sports. When I was living in Sydney I always thought that after Les and Johnny he was the next biggest voice in pushing the soccer/football agenda in Oz.

Long-serving football journalist and broadcaster Mike Cockerill has died after a long illness. Cockerill, 56, spent more than 30 years reporting on soccer in Australia, largely with Fairfax newspapers and Fox Sports. He covered six World Cups, the A-League and three Olympic Games in a long association with the game.

In 2011, he was inducted into the Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame. Former Socceroo Robbie Slater said he was a great contributor to the game. "Mike was greatly respected," Slater said on Fox Sports. "A really top man. We pass on all our best to his family. "He was a very, very special person to me. I've known him since I was 17. It's a huge shock to me. Cockerill's death comes a month after the passing of another well-known football media figure, Les Murray.

Wow, 6 changes to the starting lineup for tonight's game.

40 shots on goal, 13 on target about 5 hit the woodwork and only 1 goal until 81st minute when Thai's scored to equal the score. Surprised it was Leckie who scored the winner given he usually misses or hits the goal post. Bloody hell it was like watching Port against Richmond pepper the ball inside 50 for only 8 goals.

Depending on the Japs to do the right thing in a few hours and beat the Saudi's or at least get a draw. Or it could be the long way to Russia first via probably Syria and then play Panama or Honduras.

On the Asian qualifying, I have published an article on The Roar once, some time ago:
http://www.theroar.com.au/2009/11/21/a-solution-to-the-world-cup-qualifying-problems/

Please, just read "Confederation" where I have written "Conference."

tl;dr
The basic assumption is that Oceania shouldn't be a Confederation in its own right. So, I suggest, first, a merger between OFC and AFC, and, then, splitting the new Confederation in two:
I) AFC - FA's from West Asia, and South and Central Asia;
II) Pacific Confederation (PFC) - FA's from East Asia, ASEAN, and Oceania.

What a cluster****. All they had to do was score 3-4 goals against the worst team in the group. Is it too late to change coaches? Probably. We might beat Syria but will really struggle vs the 4th CONCACAF team.

Thailand ended up with 2 points and a -18 GD. One point came from their home game against us, with Aust contributing 1 to that 18 GD.

Ange can say what he wants, "we lost one game", we were very ordinary throughout the qualifiers with the drawn home game against Japan just about the best of a bad bunch.

I haven't been overly convinced by the whole qualifying campaign. And that game in Thailand was always going to come back to haunt us.

Ange plays a style of football that doesn't suit the squad at his disposal. He's a pretty stubborn man and winning the Asian Cup at home would only have grown his self confidence. People complained about Pim Verbeek and his dour defensive style but to me that is the sort of football we need to play to be competitive against the really good football nations.
