Spain 3 v Portugal 3. What a game. The standard and quality was worthy of a semi final or final. Could well be the game of the tournament and in 32 years they will still be showing highlights.

Glad I got up to watch the SBS 6.30am replay in full. No way was I going to wake up and stay up for the 4.00 am live coverage.

Ronaldo got a penalty after 4 minutes and it seemed to have opened the game up. Portugal v Spain Euro an WC games the last few tournaments have had been dour low scoring affairs. But it forced Spain to attack and they scored on the half hour. Ronaldo at 44th minute had a low hard left foot drive from the edge of the box and the Spanish goalie had a bit of a shocker, went down and didn't stop it and ricocheted in off his knee. Portugal 2-1 up but it was a great quality game in the first half.

But second half got better. Costa scored his second goal in the 55th minute and then 3 minutes later Nacho smashed a ball diagonally from 30m out hit the inside of left post and ricocheted and almost hit the right post. Spain 3-2 up and they took over. The next 20 minutes I watched, and thought Australia are 50 years away from producing players that can control the ball like these guys. Between 76 minute mark and 88 minute Spain must have had 180 passes and controlled the ball for 90% of that time.

Martin Tyler warned that Spain despite dominating the game so much, wouldn't want to give a free kick away close to goal. A minute or two later, indeed they give a free kick away to Ronaldo just outside the box and this happens

Ronaldo after finally delivering at Euro 2016, gets a hatrick in the highest quality game after producing 3 goals in 3 previous world cups. What a game! We have been spoilt too early in the tournament and so many games will be boring compared to this one. And finally, what a brilliant call by Martin Tyler. Watch the replay if you missed it.

Woke up this morning. Pandemonium on Twitter. Watched the highlights. Ronaldo doing Ronaldo. Not even surprised. What a legend.

In all the excitement of this mornings game, I missed that Ronaldo achieved something Tim Cahill is trying to do, score goals in 4 world cups. Ronaldo joins Pele (1958-70), West Germany's Uwe Seeler (1958-70) and Germany's Miroslav Klose (2002-14).

Pele...... 6+1+1+4 = 12 goals 2 goals in 1958 final + 1 in 1970 final
Seeler... 2+2+2+3 = 9 goals was first player to score 2 or more goals in 3 consecutive WC's. Beat Pele to 4th
Klose.... 5+5+4+2 = 16 goals most ever in WC's, Brazil's Ronaldo has 15 (1998, 2002, 2006 - was in 1994 squad but didnt play a game)
Ronaldo 1+1+1+3 = 6
Cahil.... 2+1+2+?? = 5

managed to be up to watch that game - seen all 5 goals but must have fell asleep somehow after the 5th and was woken to the commentary of Ronaldo's last goal. Not sure how I fell asleep as it was an amazing game.

the other thing of beauty was the commentary of the match - that was brilliant.

Whilst SBS only has 10 games left to show live before they show the final 4 games, I see that all their games are replayed in full at 6am ACST.Its the full build up with Lucy and Fos in the studio before the game at half time and after the game so it feels like you are watching the game live. Just don't turn on the radio or look at your phone or change the channel.

I would have hated to have just seen a 20 or 30 minute replay and not only miss a great game but miss Martin Tyler's great commentary for the full 90+ minutes. He is a brilliant commentator and like Richie Benaud, he doesn't over commentate and think he has to fill dead space.

TISM in their Les Murray song sang, Les is more, more or less. Martin Tyler understands very well that less usually is more in his commentary.

First 10 minutes we had plenty of gaps in defence just like in so many of the big qualifying games. Then we started to play well, France for some reason back off a bit and we started playing some positive attacking football.

Iceland hang on for a 1-all draw with Argentina!

Aguero put the Argies ahead after 19 minutes, but Iceland hit back 4 minutes later. Messi messed up with a missed penalty at the 64 minute mark. Why am I getting a feeling of deja vu about that?

Yep well done. Iceland did better than my Optus feed did the last 20 minutes but last 2 or 3 minutes in particular. Its why phone apps is a bullshit way to watch live sport.

Socceroos played very well. Committed defensively and creative with the ball at all the right times. If you'd offered 2-1 prior to kick off, I would've taken it in a second. And yet, I feel kind of flat that we didn't end up with a point given the way the game was played.

Messi was lol. Choked on the penalty and then dropped his head and played shit for the rest of the game. Iceland are amazing. Half their country parked in defence but somehow managed to keep the Argentines at bay.

This game has been a pretty good one for 0-0.

end to end & free flowing.

Navas' class is really showing.

Brilliant first half in the Mexico v Germany game. Mexico 1-0 up and could have 3-0 up if their forwards had some decent ability on their non dominate foot inside the box. plus a couple of passes from outside the box were a bit too hard. Germany could have scored 3 goals as well. 10 attempts by Mexico 4 on target and 8 by Germany for 5 on target says there have been plenty of chances. Mexico slicing Germans up thru the middle on counter attack and Germany controlling their passes nicely when they have momentum.

World Cup's "bah-dum-tsss"

Argentina struggles against small islands since the Falklands War.

Germany has experience in losing on Russian soil.

The world has learned why Brazil's politicians trust Switzerland more.
