Spain 3 v Portugal 3. What a game. The standard and quality was worthy of a semi final or final. Could well be the game of the tournament and in 32 years they will still be showing highlights.
Glad I got up to watch the SBS 6.30am replay in full. No way was I going to wake up and stay up for the 4.00 am live coverage.
Ronaldo got a penalty after 4 minutes and it seemed to have opened the game up. Portugal v Spain Euro an WC games the last few tournaments have had been dour low scoring affairs. But it forced Spain to attack and they scored on the half hour. Ronaldo at 44th minute had a low hard left foot drive from the edge of the box and the Spanish goalie had a bit of a shocker, went down and didn't stop it and ricocheted in off his knee. Portugal 2-1 up but it was a great quality game in the first half.
But second half got better. Costa scored his second goal in the 55th minute and then 3 minutes later Nacho smashed a ball diagonally from 30m out hit the inside of left post and ricocheted and almost hit the right post. Spain 3-2 up and they took over. The next 20 minutes I watched, and thought Australia are 50 years away from producing players that can control the ball like these guys. Between 76 minute mark and 88 minute Spain must have had 180 passes and controlled the ball for 90% of that time.
Martin Tyler warned that Spain despite dominating the game so much, wouldn't want to give a free kick away close to goal. A minute or two later, indeed they give a free kick away to Ronaldo just outside the box and this happens
Ronaldo after finally delivering at Euro 2016, gets a hatrick in the highest quality game after producing 3 goals in 3 previous world cups. What a game! We have been spoilt too early in the tournament and so many games will be boring compared to this one. And finally, what a brilliant call by Martin Tyler. Watch the replay if you missed it.
