The British commentator we had on the TV coverage mentioned it after he scored that goal to tie the game 2-2. he said something about stuffing up off field at an under 21 game for Brazil.

That was a terrible penalty shot he took though in the penalty shoot out. When the Russian goalie did that great save for Croatia's 2nd shot, and both teams were 1 conversion and 1 miss each after 2 penalties, I was convinced Fernandes would put them back in front .

But I though once it went to penalties, Russia would win and then make the final and then Putin's dirty tricks department would ensure they won the final.

He came to Gremio as U-18. One season later, he was promoted to the main squad. After four seasons, he was transfered to CSKA.

The whole world thought he would score that PK. What a shame! I was thrilled when he scored the tie in ET. Great World Cup by the Russian team.

Yep. Managed to snag the day off tomorrow from my seasonal tax duties. After the Columbia game the other day, where it didn’t finish till about 6:30, I went back to bed to catch a few zzzz’s but failed miserably and was a walking zombie for the rest of the day.

Here in WA the group stage games were great timing - 8.00 pm and then 10.00pm from memory; then the round of 16 and quarters moved to 10.00pm and 2.00am starts, ok for the first games even if they went to extra time/penalties, but the semis starting at 2.00am can get nicked. I expect the final will be at the same time too

Amazing effort by a country of 4 million to make the WC final and maybe win it.

Uruguay in 1950 ( and host in 1930) is the only nation smaller either by today's population or by relative population in 1950.

Only Hungary in 1954, Sweden 1958 (hosts) Cezchoslovakia in 1962 and Netherlands in 1974, 1978 and 2010 are small nations who have made the final but they were back then or are today 2 to 4 times the size of Croatia.

Pre World War II Cezchoslovakia in 1934 and Hungary in 1938 made the finals but their populations relative to the big Euro national was a lot bigger than Croatia's is today.

All other winners and finalists have a population of 40 million people today.

But the Croatian's like the old Yugoslavia punch way above their weight in many sports especially team sports.

Harry Kane should have absolutely buried his chance in the first half - the one called offside which would have been overruled had he scored. His highlights package from this WC must be the weakest of any Golden Boot winner in recent memory.

Congrats to the Croatians...... England's performance wasn't that crash hot, there first goal was a gift really. Fouled in a spot you never should do at this level, plus the goal keeper not standing in the correct spot to parry that shot away. For the life of me, stand in the middle of the gaol on the line to give you maximum distance to give you time to move and see the ball. If that was the Belgium keeper, that would have been saved. I hope that Croatia has learnt from that. Can not afford to do this against France.

I am not sure if Croatia can go all the way to win it, but they are sure as shit going to give 110%, dare to dream. If they are to have any chance of winning this, they will have sacrifice a striker for a defender/midfield role type of player to get numbers behind the ball. France has speed, lots of it. They need to annoy the shit out of MBappe, get him off his game. Modric has his job on Greizmann. One more important thing, possesion is the key. Croatia need France to chase the ball all day.

My scenario predictions either way:

In this order

If France win, it will be 4-0, easy stroll in the park.

If Croatia win, it will be won in the last 5mins of normal time, 1-0.

If it goes to penalties after a 1-1, which is not likely to happen, Croatia will win it, cause history is going to repeat itself like 2006 for France..
