Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

Here i was about to bite and say that a little bird told me Rowan was going to north to play full back.

The bird was a literal finch and talks to me daily
Reading between the lines, Cats are going to bid on Saints NGA Academy player Kye Fincher unless we do Marshall for unders.

(Which is fine because we hate the academies anyway)

We do have a history of bidding on academy players but I don't know Fincher is in the draft range to make that a credible threat. Where we've bid it's been on big drifters like Gulden and Windhager

If the club trades him for anything less that way overs, I'd be really disappointed. He's one of our best players... why would we trade him because it suits Geelong?

Excited to see him and TDK running around together next year.

I mean Rowan doesn't want to be there and clearly Saints list management team don't think very highly of him by bringing in a guy to take his job on twice the pay.

You can sell it to us like others have all you like about him playing as a forward and he was recruited as a forward and he'll love playing forward as a backup ruck....
But then why did he publicly request the trade if he liked and was onboard with the idea like we've been told? No one has been able to answer that question soo far...seems to be ignored and then shut down.

Two things are very clear here.
1. Rowan is a pure ruck first and foremost

2. we also know the Saints are moving guys like he and Steele to the side so they can go in a different direction with their shopping spree overpaying role players but more importantly paying superstar level money to a great not elite player in the exact same position relegating him to a backup.

Not saying what Saints are doing is right or wrong that's their choice just an interesting way to go about it.
You can't get pissy at Rowan for not wanting to be shunned to the side of where he should be playing based on one season of it semi working with an entirely different player 5 nearly 6 years ago.

We did bid on Ethan Read with Pick 10 before trading back to Pick 11 with DoDo so he could grab Nate Caddy with Pick 10 who he was desperate for (I imagine he still thinks of it as his last Final Trade "win") and then we grabbed Connor O'Sullivan with Pick 11 and Pick 36 got us Shaun Mannagh.

Thanks Essendon

Again though, read was projected top 10. It would be out of step for us to bid on players not projected to go first round

I've been of the opinion Rowan was a part time ruckman for years, his ability below his knees sets him apart from most names brought up as a comparison regarding ruckmen turned forwards (he's not a giraffe) & we have a significant weakness in the CHF department. Not necessarily the goalkicking part of CHF but the link up to the wing CHF, (I'm envisioning 1997 Stewie Loewe, not 90+ goal 1996 Stewie Loewe), leaving a hole for Sharman to play on the 3rd back.

But here's one thing, we don't need to sell that idea to you, you need to sell us a decent trade.

To the bolded, why has he requested a trade? Scott whispering sweet nothing's in his ear, more money, more years, farm boy from Portland closer to home, sold the idea he's the missing piece of a premiership.

Luckily he's contracted, pay up or he plays forward and you're here next year offering us a 2nd rounder.

I’m sure even TDK knows he is the beneficiary of us pricing Carlton out of matching and essentially using the salary cap we had banked instead of draft picks to improve our list.

I’m also sure other players at the club know this, and it’s the price of getting better.

Aleer on the other hand I can understand causing a bit of unrest if reported salary offer were true.

I don’t think anyone is getting pissy at Rowan. He seems like a great bloke and is a great player and it’s understandable he might want to finish his career closer to home. Hopefully he’s still at Saints next year though, unless the club gets a great deal for him.

1. His contract was reportedly front ended. IF... and I mean if... that's the case... he'd earn more by going to Geelong.

2. It's about what's best for our footy club.

3. I don't know that anyone is "pissy" with Rowan. Again, he's a contracted player. If the club deems it best to keep him, we keep him.

1. Absolutely but that's not the reason he's leaving, it's a bonus of him leaving but it's not the reason.
You think the trade request happening mere minutes after TDK signing announcement was a coincidence?

2. And that's totally fine, the Saints are more than welcome to do that. You won't get any argument from me.

3. I think not necessarily pissy at Rowan himself but pissy at the situation and who he has requested a trade to...

The grand plan that was laid out with two rucks sounded good to everyone but the actual guy involved and he doesn't want a bar of it despite whatever Saints fans keep telling us. Again, why formally request a trade if he was happy to do what the Saints wanted for him?

I think the words and the actions are not lining up.

It's probably the rapid thinning of the hair. The poor kid is quickly looking like he's in his early thirties.
He and Hunter Clark are just a couple of the high profile clients of Gerard Wheatley's famed elite wellness spa, located a few km from Chernobyl

So your playing against a team with a formidable midfield I would have thought if you could limit them from getting first use of the somewhat it would have pretty decent impact

We finished 2nd on the ladder and made the Grand Final defeating pretty much every other team in the top 10 who had a legit ruckman. We even beat Brisbane using Blics and SDK 3 weeks earlier than the GF.
It's not the issue that caused Brisbane to beat us despite you wanting it desperately to be the reason.

i can go to the Saints board right now and see a lot of people very resolute about only parting with him if its insane overs, like ridiculous overs...for a 30 year old ruck who has formally requested a move.

I don't know how much of a factor money is in him leaving. Either do you. You can speculate... you can assume... but you don't know.

I'm one who thinks only trade him for huge overs. Why? Because I think we're a better side if he stays. I really want to see both him and TDK in the side next year. I want Ro running around for us next year.

What does Ro want? He obviously wants to go to Geelong. He wouldn't be the first player who has requested a trade and had the club keep him because they think it's the best decision for the club. He'll live.

No of course not...the announcement of a request to move to Geelong mere minutes after TDK signing announcement had "nothing" to do with it
If he wanted money he wouldn't go to Geelong, Geelong don't overpay players that is a well known fact.
Means Geelong miss out on a lot of good players who can get better money elsewhere outside the payment structure.

If Saints hold onto him then that's their choice, i can't dismiss a team keeping a contracted player.

You seem stuck.

I'm not saying it's about money. I'm saying I don't know, and either do you. It may well mostly be about TDK coming in.

I don't really care why he wants to leave. We brought in TDK to try and improve our side. So Boo hoo

Ro signed a contract. I hope we keep him to it, unless Geelong make us an offer too good to refuse. Not an offer their supporters or the brain dead afl media deem fair... an offer that would make us think it's worth losing a very good contracted player we'd rather keep.

I'm not stuck i'm just keen to see why he wants to leave, i'm sure we'll hear more about it eventually so happy to wait.

We do bid on some good academy guys previously but I doubt that fincher gets bid early.

If there was a week off between the prelim and grand finals as there was pre the first final, you'd have more chance of beating Brisbane.

A couple of the older types looked cooked early, but you guys would know better than us. There's a reason veterans footy is played every 2 weeks.

Our best players come grand final day were all the young fellas, but the young fellas were a huge reason we finished 2nd in the first place. Danger came out of the box for Finals BECAUSE we didn't rely on him during the year (David King would always point that out).
Stewart only started hitting form at the end of the season and come Finals time. Through the middle and early portions of the year he was injured and got subbed out multiple times. Blics played his best games of the year in the Qualifying and Prelim Finals.

Jez is about the only older bloke who was consistently great all year and even then he had patches where he looked very average.

A lot of people don't watch Geelong play (a lot purely out of spite and it's weird people do it as they are missing out...)
Geelong play a lot of high scoring footy and a lot of blockbuster games and those same people assume its only 4 older guys who contribute to us winning which is hilariously wrong.

A Carlton fan tried to tell our sub yesterday that Geelong was falling off a cliff due to older players heading to retirement...but if Geelong was falling off a cliff why wouldn't they accept our future firsts for Curnow? Because that argument doesn't make sense. Geelong have heavily transitioned to younger players running the side through them eg. Holmes, Smith, Miers, Mannagh, Dempsey etc.

Our Best and Fairest leader board gives a much better perspective on how our team plays.
Rowan would be a massive inclusion but he's not the decider between us winning or losing a Premiership, he'd just help a lot to get to that point. We need a star ball winning mid as priority number 1.
