The sad fact is, we probably only have 1 or 2 listed players that can make this effective. If it was me I would be screwing around not just with the set up in the middle, I would be stuffing around with the wings, half forward line and half back line too.
...
I'd love to see thumps forward to a weighted half forward line too ....Tarrant is very quick, Jeffery is OK off the mark - throw in a Hinks next season - pull your midfield behind the ball for the back tap (but spread).
The tear in from half forward is fun to watch when the ball gets thumped forward.
When I was at my fastest, my teams used to have set plays where I would come off the HF side of the square and be there in time to receive the tap over the top. Worked a treat. And if I didn't get it, I could shepherd or tackle the opposition. They shit themselves when they don't know what is coming from behind.
Sadly, I think Mayne is the only one with the ability to do anything like this. And I would like to see them try something like it with him.
What had been missing up until recently were the angles run off the square. Seemed to change against Northern with Peake coming off the back.
Other teams would just run angles off the wings in between HB, intercepting the taps. Sandi never appeared awake to this. So we need a designated winger with the half forwards going to the one side to receive the attacking tap, or to use the tap behind more. Seems Sandi loves to put it to the side a lot, where it is only ever 50/50.
