Surjan's a very, very solid footballer. Their vice captain, isn't he? Might hinder any potential trade though he's probably keen to jump off a sinking ship.

He's had his injury troubles recently, IIRC.

Correct. A knee injury last season.

Can't quite see the reasoning as to why we'd be chasing a then 27 year old back man.
I would have thought we may get games into a 187cm Tuohy rather than a 179cm small for a back pocket position.

Is Surjan a good kick?

Intensity not god enough at VFL level at the minute and his pace, or lack of, is being exposed big time. Not even close at the minute.

Having seen about 3 Bullants games in the past 5 weeks or so i'd totally agree with this.

Any news on Mitchell BiB - how far away is he and how (un)happy is the club with the structural soundness of his shoulder?

Tuohy (rookie upgrade).

Joseph (delisted for his services to not coming on like Bentick, Backwell, Browne and Blackwell).

I'd even consider upgrading O'Keeffe for Armfield if he continues to turn it over and defend poorly.

Both Joseph and Armfield are out of contract at the end of this year.

Army is good depth. AJ is on the fringe, kicking skills are horrible!

Tuohy should get upgraded and ROK might be given another year as a rookie just for list purposes unless he has a huge year for the Ants.

Cachia, Casboult, Dare are interesting too. Dare to be let go?

Is Pete Labi still alive?

Im pretty sure peter Labi is playing for Mt Gravatt in Qld state League

According to Facebook - Pete is back home in Brisbane.

Pass on Surjan.
Not a chance he'd be in our best 22.
West Coast and/or Freo can have a crack at him.

Good news, if true, that Carlton want to move from Etihad to the 'G.

I just wonder if there is any truth to the runour about Greg Swann?

I disagree re: Surjan.

Injuries aside, he would be in our best 22 when fit he is a fantastic lock down defender and I dare say he would stop players like Lindsay Thomas/Stephen Milne kicking 7 goals on us.

I heard Synbad/THS mention that certain major players were unhappy with Greg Swann's commitment to the job (whatever that means?) ... I wonder who they had in mind as a replacement? hmmmm.

Disagree C4.
Whilst Surjan is certainly a competitor, I just doubt he's the type of player we actually need. Other players on our list can already provide us what he gives to Port.

Interesting comments re: Swann. Watch this space I suppose.

Yep. With about two-thirds of our list capable of playing back, I don't think that's an area we need to strengthen (especially considering our small-medium defender stocks).

Surjan would have been an asset two or three years ago and is no doubt a decent player, but he is entering that dangerous period in his career when his best might just be behind him and the injuries are starting to mount. I would much rather use the draft pick potentially sacrificed for Surjan to add to our midfield depth or bring another goalkicker onto the list.

If we could somehow snag Surjan on the very cheap then i'd be for it. He'd be an upgrade on Joseph who is an undersized midfielder masquerading as a backman.

Last year we discussed Matthew Warnock but it was widely accepted that having him and Jammo in the same team would be too defensive and hurt our rebounding ability.

Now that Jammo has taken his attacking game to a new level, would someone like him be more suitable now?

He'd be cheap and is 27. Not too old that it would be a waste of time and not too young that he would hurt Watson's development and keep him out of the side when he's ready. It's obvious that Watson is going to take time.

Just a thought.

would prefer to draft more key forwards tbh. there is a plethora of midfielders and the backline has strengthened considerably since last year.

here come all the rumours. which one will come true at season end. considering we have lots of young stars, time to fill it up with experince players

Just heard a rumour T bird's manager is shopping him around a bit... they must be worried about his future at the blues.
IMO it would be no huge loss.

This would make perfect business sense. Once current injured players are ready to resume he will be out of the side and someone like GWS might pay for an experienced, injury free third defender/forward for their first 2 or 3 years.

We wouldn't get anything of value for Thornton.

In fact i'd be very surprised if anyone wanted him. No disrespect to T-Bird but he wouldn't improve a contender and he wouldn't help a young team develop.

GWS about a 2% chance.

At the moment he's depth, but he's required depth. Unless we picked up another key back, i'd much prefer to keep T-Bird on our list.
It's bad enough going in to a game with only Jammo. Going in to a season with only Jammo would be suicide.

good i hope he gets shopped around, better for us :)

Bit tough there Gezim.

We can't blame Thornton if he was to be shopping around.
What would any of us do under the same circumstances?
Certainly no hard feelings towards Thorntin as he has done what he had to in his games for us.

How soon we forget, blokes like 32 and Big Red got shit-canned from one end of this forum to the other by a lot of posters conveniently ignoring the years of misery they endured punching above their weight (sorry Lance) in embarrassingly bad teams. Would like a 19 year old Whitnall turning up at the club next year just quietly. As for Thornton, he's a tough bunny to love but credit for enduring and persisting against better opposition and nasty fan sentiment.

Wasn't really expecting to get anything for him, I assumed his contract would be up and he would just go because the alternative would be a delist or at the most retain and play out his days in the Ants which I'm sure he doesn't want to do.

I also thought GWS might be a good fit because while it's nice to recruit stars they'll probably only nab 1 or 2 and the rest will be exeprienced journeymen who can keep them competitive in their first couple of years until the youngsters are ready.
