As long as we don't pay the kitchen sink like we did with McLean I'd be more than happy. Straight swap for Kane Lucas perhaps? Doubt st Kilda would accept that. Is free agency happening next year?

If you told me right now that St. Kilda would accept Pick 11 for Goddard I wouldn't hesitate. ;)

Been told by a very good source that Goddard wants to be traded to Carlton next year, premiership window at St Kilda is closed, he asked for the trade to happen....remember he was a mad blues supporter growing up...

The bolded bit is obviously nonsense.

Still doubt it would ever happen...would have to give up way too much...but its a nice thought.

Carlton is a very good place to be right now.
Opportunities for success on the field and for life after footy, off the field.

Someone like a Goddard knows he'd get a game with us and considering the turmoil and seeming unhappiness at St.Kilda, who knows.

For what it's worth Goddard won't be the only player wanting to come on board come seasons end.
Having said that, Collingwood is just as an appealing place to be, also.

Why do you say that?

Given you had a manager, wouldn't you also wish him to explore your preffered employment destinations?
That's what they're there for.
He may or may not want to leave and something might happen at the end of the year, but it's ridiculous to suggest he's already "asked for a trade to happen" as of round 14.

Just because it's not trade week doesn't mean to say that feelers aren't being thrown out.
This happens all year around.

would we even have salary cap space to pay the man? and what could we offer that the saints would even take.

I wouldnt be surprised if he asks to leave, the way he talks about contracts and negotiations doesnt really convince anyone he wants to stay at the saints.

Judd deal was on the cards half way through the season

Given that our kids (Murph, Kreuzer, Gibbs, Rusty, etc.) have all taken under market value to stay with the club we do have a bit of room in the salary cap to fit in a relatively big name acquisition this next year.

However, on the Goddard front, was asked by the media whether he'd take a deal from GWS only a couple of weeks or so ago. His response was that he'd be a one club player UNLESS he was offered something beyond ridiculous to get him across to another club.

The media took it at the time to be financial, obviously. However, for a player that has been on a good wicket for a majority of his career and is looking to win a premiership or two before he retires at the club that he grew up idolizing perhaps that could be personally considered very attractive to him as well.

I very much doubt it, however. Would I take him if it didn't include a major piece of our current best 22? In a heartbeat.

You add Goddard to our side and we go that much closer to #17. Once again, it would be near impossible to orchestrate, the Saints would fight tooth and nail to retain their #1 player and only accept a decent trade (see the Luke Ball situation, where they refused pick 30 and Wellingham and preferred to lose him for nothing). A decent trade would have to include some good, established players.

At this point, I'm happy to avoid any trades that reach too deep into our talent well, if only because I think we have a good team mentality at the moment - morale is high, everyone is happy and wants to play for the club - and wrenching a player out of the CFC to make a trade happen could jeopardise that.

It's just the nature of the game, as there'll always be trades.
We traded for Judd with no negative effects and the same would be the case for Goddard or a player of his ilk.
There may be a nose or two out of joint, but that would unlikely come from the top 12-15 players assured of a game each week.

If Goddard was to be seen as someone who could take us further, without losing too much weight within our salary cap, then the club would be obligated to have a serious shot at it.

I know what you're saying, but I think a trade for Goddard would require some fairly hefty sacrifice. Also, I think one of the great things we have going for us at the minute is that we have a genuinely enthusiastic, tight-knit and loyal group of players. Players who exemplify this are people like Russell, Waite, to name a few. I'm not saying they're likely to be traded at all, but removing players could disrupt the fibre underpinning our current success.

That said, I would love to see Goddard at Carlton and strongly advocate pursuing all avenues to getting him here. Just need to be wary of the cost.

That's possible but not probable in a professional enviroment.
We have a very healthy depth of players right now, but by virtue of that fact alone we may have some players ranked 20 onwards, that may also want an out in order to get regular games elsewhere.
Grigg did last year and I can see a heavier probability this year that others may well want to do so also, come years end.

The top players would welcome further class coming into the side giving them the chance to get closer to a flag.
As for the club? It's really a no-brainer, if all the numbers fit and a winning scenario is stitched up through the trade.

Very true. And I'm sure the club would be fair and honest to all players regarding any possible trade. I look forward to hearing some more substantiated updates on the situation :thumbsu:

I don't want to say it, but with Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Goddard, Kreuzer - 17 would not be far away. Jizz worthy :o

I wonder what the players felt when we had the opportunity to add Greg Williams for the 1992 and beyond seasons.

if you have an opportunity to add a player who can (and would) strengthen our chances to win a premiership then you have to do it.

The impression I get with Goddard is that he is type of player that would more likely leave a club for a chance at a premiership then he would solely for dollars. So safe to say Carlton is more of chance of a premiership in the near future then GWS is, or for that matter the saints are.

It would be nice, but wouldn't suprise me if he took the Gold Coast with the Millions.

I don't post very often and love to read what others have to say. I've heard about this rumour but didn't think anything of it until the same rumour came from a close associate of his management team. Might go nowhere but would be great if it had some truth about it.
They definetly ask for Andrew Walker the Saints as a starting point, we need to keep him now.
