I've only seen the Essendon game so can't really comment on his ability except to say he looks to tick a box for us but my concern in all trade negotiations is what we will be forced to give up.

Hate to see stalwarts of our club moved on against their wishes.

Wouldn't be willing to part with JR...heart and soul type player at the club.

Hammer and Bower might go under the microscope though.

Would Bower + 1st rounder get it done? Doubt it...

I would be willing to give up a lot! This is the player we need to complete the puzzle. We have two good backs with more on the way, we have the best midfield in the comp, and we have one decent forward with one on the way but are missing that second reliable target... Enter Butcher.

Hammer <--> Butcher
Hammer + 2nd rounder <--> Butcher
Bower + 2nd rounder <--> Butcher
even Bower + 1st rounder <--> Butcher (provided we don't need it for lil Bucks)

A premiership for a club is huge and when you look at the way Collingwood went about filling in the gaps last year, it'd be silly not to give up good players who are more easily replaced for a bloke who can take us to 17, 18, 19... etc.

The club knows what it's doing tho, and he knows how close we are to being a serious flag threat so I assume that if it's gonna happen, we need not worry about how.

Not even close zee. John Butcher is the future of Port Adelaide.
After showing plenty in the last couple of games, they'd want something equal to a top 5 pick at least.

I don't really understand the part about the Gippsland football.

Does that mean because his Dad works in football, he's more likely to come home? I don't really see the connection.

i'd part with Hammer and a pick for Butcher (port will want a first rounder, as others will bid).

At the moment we have 3 senior rucks, they enquired about Hammer a year or 2 back so there may still be interest.

Really don't wanna part with Russell, he will be much better next year.

The Bower suggestions are just ridiculous, a guy in our ressies whos best has been missing for some time, for an exciting up and coming young KP forward?:rolleyes:

Its gonna cost us people, he will be in big demand and is exactly what we need.

I don't know how true this is, but i'm an old Maffra boy and still have contacts. I've been told the Blues have offered a 5 year contract to Butcher.

I'd definitely part with Hampson.

I understand that he's got loads of potential, but when it comes down to it, if I had a choice, i'd rather Butcher every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

We'd have to give more than just Hampson though, which might sound weird considering Butcher has only played 2 games, but we would.

You're amazing, the loyalty act I feel is a cover up. I feel you wouldn't like any player I had a interest in us signing, that could be a target. I doubt we get him, because My team Carlton, hasn't signed a big player since Richard Pratt passing, or since Chris Judd signing. John Butcher would fit perfect in Carlton plans to be successful. Port Adelaide are lucky to be granted a AFL license. John Butcher is a Victorian, and why wouldn't he want to play in the most successful club of the Last Century. The only loyalty could be to the mighty dollar, although I would hope players would love a chance to play in a Premiership.

Starry, try not to analyse too much. It's not your strong suit.

First of all, I hardly spend my time trying to build counter arguments to your posts. They just come naturally to most posters.

Secondly, it's not as though all clubs have signed big name players since Carlton got Judd. These sort of trades are few and far between.

Thirdly, as Paul Connors is a manager of many Carlton players, and back in the dark days, we really had a problem with player managers trying to screw us over, I'd like to think that no player manager has an agenda to convince a player to go elsewhere for a few dollars more. He should be doing what the player wants and then look for the best deal accordingly.

I am acutely aware that we have no right to complain if our players are cherry picked from under our noses, if we are doing the same thing to other clubs. We have been where Port are remember. It is not a fun place to be.

Having said that, if Butcher is hell bent on leaving and returning to Victoria, we have to try to work out a deal. We would be an attractive proposition with little competition for key forward spots and building towards some success. We don't want to upset a tight knit playing group by railroading someone who doesn't want to go (a la Judd/Kennedy) and we are unsure what draft pick it will take to pick up Buckley this year, so we may be limited in what we can achieve.

We have asked our gun players to be loyal with GCS and GWS on the prowl, so we can hardly turn around now and shaft them to Port in order to get Butcher. Some people talk about Gibbs being the asking price. Well considering he is best mates with Murphy, what effect does that have on Murphy? Besides Gibbs is contracted for next year and doesn't have to go, but I bet if GWS came sniffing at the end of the contract, Gibbs would not feel a sense of loyalty to us if we tried to trade him.

Some things are not quite as easy as some people make out.

Agree, they'd want a first rounder as well. Buckley will cost us a second rounder at most surely?? so Hammer and our first rounder to Port??

Would look like this if it happened.......

IN: Butcher, Buckley
OUT: Hampson, 1st & 2nd round pick

Why would Hampson go to Port Adelaide?
For what possible reason?

That's the one. Buckley will not cost us a first rounder. So I think this is what it'll be.
Looks like a bit to pay, but we could very well be trading for a premiership here!
Get it done boysh!

Butcher has played 4 games! granted he's kicked a few goals and looks good however who has he kicked them on? Schoenmakers? Markovic? Pears?

Seriously when he kicks bags on Scarlet, Tarrant, Jamison and the like then we can start entertaining giving up Bryce Gibbs and a first rounder for him because that is what Port will ask to get the job done, Bryce Gibbs is a required player at the club and a future leader who is part of the fabric of the group no way in the world will i trade him for a guy who has played four games and helicopter kicks the ball (Sticks says hi though!) It would be Russell or Hampson and a first rounder that would max our offer out and that will not be good enough given our first pick in the ND and the drool that other Melbourne clubs will go through...

he'll be too expensive and Mitchell may be just as good anyway..

Opposition supporters keep telling me we just send a VISY truck full of money to player's house if we want them to come over. Why don't we just do that again?

Butcher could be a cult hero at the blues but it will cost us.

Lucas + Armfield/Bower to West Coast
Ebert + Wilson to Port
Butcher to the Blues

Buther would be worth a lot of memberships too I recon. He is Ports future though and I recon he is the first player on their list when it comes to priority in signing and after a cleean out should have the money to keep him. We are going to have to sell our offer well and get onto them early. Buther is thd perfect fit for his club. They will be holding on tight so it's all about convincing him to go. Most likely they will do a Nick Stevens and refuse to deal forcing him to stay or go to the draft. Although you think they might have learnt a lesson about letting good players go for nothing.

According to KB this morning on SEN, Richmond are in the "box seat".

Again. :D

IIRC, his opponents were Gibson & Schoenmakers, Barlow & Wood & Pears, Hooker and Carlisle.

Nice one grab marks that you can't teach, yet Butcher didn't take SOS, Sexton, Christou and Dean apart in these three games.

I hope we don't rush into things like we did with the Mclean trade.

We need to be patient and look at all uncontracted players.

Sam Reid has already been forgotten. :)

Kreuzer forward?

Blight thinks Kreuzer could be an eighty goal a year forward.

JB will be a good player, but I don't want to pay through the nose for him.

We got Stevens for nothing, so trading with Port for a young gun won't be easy.

Clubs have long memories.

And based on the logic you see on BF, trading a good player and a first round pick for Butcher will be as dumb as swapping Kennedy plus picks three and 20 for Judd. ;) :D
