Good luck Brett, you've got my vote and will encourage others to support your candidacy.
I briefly spoke to you in passing at the last AGM, I think to congratulate and thank you for asking your question so articulately. I knew you were writing here because we both posted in the AGM thread after the event, but I didn't know anything about you beyond that you were smart, articulate and asked the right questions. Your posts here and on the Black and White Noise blog underline that.
I really hope we can get somewhere on the member elect board positions because I feel that this is crucial to the club retaining its identity into the future and not becoming another soulless franchise. I was chatting to El_Scorcho the other day and he made the comment that the fans are the club and that the oral history we pass down to our kids is so important so that they know who we are and what we stand for. I feel that it is important that these messages also come from the club itself, which is why it is so key that the club is authentic, clear, and passionate about who we are and what we stand for. The last decade has shown us that the Hinkley/Koch view of the club ("finals are scary", "I hate Showdowns", "I want Port Adelaide to be everyone's second club") is not conducive to ruthless winning; we can't play scared, we can't be afraid to fail, we have to be ruthless in our pursuit of glory. When the club is on record as saying that not winning the premiership is a failed season (and actually believes it), rather than having to coddle players and coaches, then we're on the right track. There can be honour in defeat, but honourable defeats of our club and jumper have been few and far between since 2015.
I think the board and administration, particularly during the last decade, has been very insular and allergic to criticism and accountability. The response to the question I asked at the last AGM around accountability over the Chasing Greatness 3 premierships in 5 years goal was disappointing and disheartening. I hope that if you are successful in being elected that you are able to communicate to the board and administration that honesty with, and accountability to, the members is of vital importance to rebuild the broken trust that has strained so many of our relationships with the most recent iteration of the club.
