I got out for the first time in 4 months last night.

Was as bad as I knew it would be. Got 2 kids under 2 and have been stress eating during the time off so I've put waaaaay too much weight on.

Back to the grind.

You gotta start somewhere! Good luck! And remember, it gets easier!

One of my favourite workouts is:

1km @ 5k pace
1 min rest
400m @ about 30 secs quicker than the 1km pace
3 min rest
did 4 sets of this this morning.
I wasn’t sure what to do with the rests so I walked the 1 min and jogged the 3 min.

I sandbagged it a little cause I didn’t know what I was in for and didn’t want to end up cooked halfway through.
The last set was still tough though and I was blowing pretty hard at the end of it.
Next time I think I only do 3 sets and push a little more.

I should have said jog recovery. Finishing up early today to go to the track. Love Friday arvo sessions, hopefully no school carnivals 🤞

I need a new strap for my HRM so I jumped online to grab one.
In the process of looking I stumbled across an optical HRM for $24 (less than the cost of a strap) on AliExpress. It’s a Coospo HW9.
Never heard of them but the reviews aren’t terrible and the price is right.
If it arrives I’ll be happy, if it connects to my watch and finds a pulse I’ll be ecstatic. Anything after that is a bonus.
If they send me a Kinder Surprise toy or something else dodgy happens then I blame Willo_ for leading me down this dark path.

If you don’t find a pulse, I suggest you check into the nearest Emergency Department!

Ohh....

I'm absolutely about to search for this right now.
If it helps ease your mind I've ran 3 times in the shoes and they are great

I’m getting pretty deep down the Chinese running shoe rabbit hole, or at least as deep as you can get without actually buying a pair.

This guy has tested a bunch of them.
He’s a Running Warehouse employee so he knows a bit about shoes. He doesn’t go too deep on any particular shoe but he covers so many.
The Li-Ning Challenger 5 gets a mention as one of his favourites.
Spoiler Alert: almost every shoe is one of his favourites.

It’s an interesting watch for anyone who might be tempted.

Did you get your HR monitor yet?

I really am liking those Challenger 5s I got... Cannot fault them, I didn't know this bloke was a Running Warehouse employee, I tought he was just a content producer but they have a deal with him and send him shit. I enjoy his work, he's a massive tightarse so helps for bargains 😂😂

It arrived on Friday already…better delivery time than some Aussie companies.
I took it out for a spin this morning. It was just a slow steady jog so nothing too tough for the HRM. The good news is I got no spikes, dropouts or cadence lock. The bad news is I’m pretty sure it was reading low. Either that or I’m fitter than I thought I was but I doubt it. It was a little slow to respond on the inclines too.
The only way to test it properly is to take my phone with me on the run but I really ****ing hate running with a phone. I’ll have to do it eventually if I want to find out how accurate this thing is though. I played around with it a bit at home and it stayed within a couple of beats of the chest strap but jogging on the spot for a minute and doing a few pushups isn’t exactly rigid testing.

3 months until Sydney. ran Brisbane half this morning, 92% relative humidity (and a really poor week of sleep) made it a challenging morning, came in a couple minutes slower than the half I did in Hawkes Bay, NZ 2-weeks ago, but given conditions and factors pretty happy nonetheless. got a good 7 week block now to really lock in to training before Run Melbourne Half mid July, where I hope to run a PB before the final lead in to Sydney and then Chicago 6 weeks later. how good is running?

How does everyone go about integrating playing football into their running schedule? I only play masters which is a game every second week and training once a week (if that) so not exactly a rigorous schedule. Also I'm not a midfielder.

Just chalk up training/playing days as interval session type days? Push back long runs if they land on game day, but still make sure I include them?

This guy is excellent (IMO); take a read of the above then have a look through his Instagram. Cam McEvoy (the swimmer) follows his High-Low philosophy which is where I came across him.

Match day would be a 'high' day, depending what you're training for I'd avoid a long run within 24 hours before or after a match (maybe an exception if you're marathon training).

I feel like i have mentioned these shoes before... but may be in that other running thread... Anyone had or have the Saucony 24s... I have had my eye on them for a bit, but they are going for $150 from Athletes Foot.. down from $270, I am thinking long run/recovery run option.
I also am a Saucony fan it is fair as well

after wearing it for a week this HRM is going into landfill.
it almost always reads low, the easier the effort the closer it is to accurate.
there have been 2 exceptions. the first 5k of this mornings long run was apparently done at 181 bpm and then it reverted to its usual shenanigans. the other time was a workout where it tracked everything reasonably accurately...when i expected it to perform the worst I got the best results
i tried wearing it on the forearm, outside bicep, inside bicep and other arm outside bicep. it made no difference.

as a general rule optical sensors don't like me so I'm not surprised. it was worth a punt.

I’m not really into gear, but what’s your view on super shoes?

I’ve got a mate who swears by them for longer runs on pavement. He recons it could knock up to 4% off my PB for a marathon.

If that is even half true, I am tempted to outlay the cash…

I currently wear Brooks Ghosts which are simple and get the job done.

4% is the improvement Nike claimed for the first ones I think!

I'm probably not quick enough to really notice, but the foams themselves just for me anyway I find really protect your legs. Definitely can notice how well you pull up after a hard workout or race in them. I do like the plated shoes for longer runs as I really think they are helping give you a bit back the longer you go. For a race day shoe it also just may be a bit of a placebo.. But they are lighter and bouncier generally and feel good.

What sort of pace are you running? I would say super shoes will 100% improve your running. Doing a workout in shoes designed for it is a huge difference to standard shoes. Go to a running store and take some for a spin on a treadmill.

They'd be a big upgrade on the Ghosts - in terms of the foam alone. Then you've got the lighter weight, carbon plate, more aggressive geometry.

The durability of super shoes aren't great though, the foam will give out quicker than the ones in the Ghost.

Super shoes are the real deal. How much improvement you get will vary depending on the individual, some might get a couple of percent, others can be 5% or more.

The foams definitely help with reducing the impact on the body, because they’re so light you can have a massive slab of foam underfoot without any of the weight issues.

Also there’s quite a few training shoes now that use the super shoe foams and tech but are more durable.

A few of the most popular ‘faster’ training shoes are on sale atm because new models are about to release. New Balance Rebel v4 and Saucony Endorphin Speed 4.

I think super shoes depend on how fast you are. If you’re mid to back of the pack like me then you’re probably better off wearing a super trainer for your marathon rather than a racing shoe.
You still get the benefit of a big chunk of modern foam and a plate but they’re less aggressive, more comfortable and more stable. If you’re going to be spending 3+ hours on your feet then these things matter.

Aiming sub 4hrs for Sydney Marathon.

My PB to date is 4:02 which was Melbourne last year.

At the moment running between 5min kms and 5:45kms depending on the run.

I’d be happy to get 500km out of them. I usually get between 600km and 900km out of the Ghosts.
