Also on the supershoe situation... I ordered my Mara shoes Friday for Melbourne this year..
NB SC Elite V4s... Rebel have the "Ekiden" colourway for $251 on sale.. Was a shoe I wanted and for that saving you suck it up on colour šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Plan is to test them for 7k Thursday and if all good I reckon I'll wear them for the Run Melbourne Half on Sunday

would love to hear how they go, am looking for my Sydney Mara shoes as we speak and this was a possible option.

How have you enjoyed them? I did Melbourne Marathon in a pair last year, they are just a really good shoe.. No bells and whistles and crazy bounce or pop but just do it all well for me.
I’ve put 25km into the shoes so far and really enjoyed wearing them to date. Super comfortable, light and enough bounce.

They are my first super shoe, so they feel sci fi to me!

I’m going to run a half in them next, and all being good I will wear them for Sydney.

Did my test this morning, 8k with 4 x 40m strides at the end.

And for those interested my shoe test results. Feel so light you don't really notice them on the foot as my instant observation, also for a shoe that looks really big and clunky in your hand they don't look it or feel it on the foot. They are both bouncy and stiff if that makes sense. I was just minimal effort today and was doing about 15ish seconds a KM quicker than what i would say that effort has been the last few weeks.. only slight issue was about 6ish K in i could feel my calfs more, just more loading through there for me... and and the heel was a bit slippy in the back of the shoe..but i will make sure i do that lace lock lacing on the weekend and that will be sweet.

I quickly checked the heel drop when i got home and it is listed as 4mm, I normally go shoes that are 8mm, but that is a quick fix i have had before with my Alphaflys I did my first mara in, popping round the corner to the physio later and getting some 4mm heel lifts to pop in which will just deload that calf enough and will be sweet

So overall, very happy.. albeit the wind can suck a giant bag of **** and it made it much harder to get a genuine feel for the shoes and how i was going because it throws off your effort perception

Super shoes have been a massive game changer in the last 8 years, one underrated aspect of super shoes aside from the ability for most runners to runner faster for longer is the improved recovery and being able to undertake bigger training volumes with lower risk of injury.

Anyone else do the Run Melb half this morning find the course short? My Garmin clocked in at 20.8km, as did some other guys I was talking to afterwards..
I was consistently 300m behind the markers most of the way, I wonder if the start line was wrong?

Yeah I came in at 20.88... But I PBd by almost 2 mins so I am refusing to not claim it šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
GPS thrown off by the skyscrapers in the city and I refuse to accept anything else!

Feels an easy issue to sort though, just that the little out and back along the river out another 150m and sorted.. 10k runners were all clocking in at 9.92 and stuff as well.

I was in front of the markers the first few Ks then just constantly behind them, was only 100-120m for a while, then blew out a bit later... I was actually filthy when I crossed the line and it was short.. If I had come in even 100m I would have just ran around the finish area to get it up tbh

Same here, also PB by over 2 mins, so spewing it’s now not Strava certified! I also contemplated striding out the 280 extra meters after the finish but there were just too many punters around.

I read on FB somone said you can try correct it, on the website version of Strava find the activity and hit the 3 dots on the LHS and there is an option to correct distance, and it corrects it based of the measured distance of the streets etc not GPS, the person on the FB group said they did it and it updated it to 21.1 for them, i tried it and it squeezed mine to 20.95 so still short and now making me wish i had ran round in circles in the finish area to get it done haha

how are you feeling today?

My quads are feeling every one of those sneaky bastard climbs in the back half of the run today :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:

Anyone ever felt plateauing in their training? Haven't hit any PBs so far this year, though my threshold runs have been noticeably improving. I don't enjoy doing events and therefore rarely set out to try breaking records. But I still want to see measurable improvement - one factor could be that since my marathon last August, I've started strength training upper body to the tune of 7-8kg added. Still, it’s a bit disheartening to feel like I’ve stalled out.

I average 60–80km a week, mostly made up of easy runs, higher aerobic efforts, and threshold work. I do speed sessions, but not often enough (I have an anxiety disorder so admittedly avoid that 'all out' v02 max feeling) - and I’m starting to wonder if that lack of variety or stimulus is holding things back.

How regularly are we hitting hills/intervals? I think I might need to study up on Daniels/Pfitzinger and work towards becoming comfortable with structured speed work.

I do like committing to 1-2 races a year, in 2023 i ran the 60km Great Ocean Road ultra and last year the 80km Bondi to Manly, (I live in Melbourne) so the Bondi trip involved flying and staying up there and with a young family you can make a mini holiday out of it but it does take up time and money. This year i had hernia surgery in Feb so planned to do 2 local races in Melbourne that will only cost me entry to.

But my point is i have a lot of "downtime" or unstructured running between these races, but usually i will plan my own goals, in 2023 after my 60km ultra i wanted to run a sub 40min 10km, then after that set some weekly milage goals.

As i have 3 months to my next official race i am currently training for a sub 4 hour 50km. I suppose i always try to structure my training with intent and an end goal, i find this helps give me some purpose.

yeah did an easy 10k lunchtime recovery run, a little sore, but not too bad, it was pretty tough conditions with that campaignery wind. and yeah the second half had tonnes of undulations, felt like a bit more than previous years that i can remember.

Geeze I feel slack, i am not running till Thursday haha
It was a different course, last time I did it 2 years ago it went into that Faulkner Park, and while i didn't love that... i reckon it probably would have been more enjoyable that the long climb round the back of the Tan that smacks you up in the Melbourne Mara as well, that footbridge finish is a bit unnecessary in your last KM as well :tearsofjoy:

How’s everyone tracking for Sydney?

probably a little bit behind where I was hoping to be - realized yesterday its only 6 weeks away! did run a 2.5 minute PB in the HM at Run Melbourne last weekend which was pleasing, but work/life has got in the way a bit in the past few weeks and have missed a few sessions (including a key long run) so really need to knuckle down now - On the wagon from now onwards, its all about Sydney for the next 6 weeks. got one more HM (in Taupo NZ) in a fortnight so hopefully can PB again there and get another 3 x 30km+ long runs in before taper starts... how's yours going?

Congrats on the HM PB. That’s a good sign you can take a lot of confidence away from.

I have been plugging away. Body feels good at the moment. I ran a 30km PB last week which was good for the confidence. I have a hilly 29km planned this week and then will incrementally increase 32km, 34km, 36km in the weeks thereafter.

Aiming for between 3:50-3:59 which I am on track for at the moment but still plenty of work to do.

missing sessions etc isn't ideal, but at least you should get a benefit from the HM session and that will be a good thing for your prep

Amazing, thank you for this. I figure structure is important. Need to get speed back in my legs and aim for sub 40 10k. After that would be a sub 1:30 half. I'm very close to both, but just need to sharpen up. This upcoming training block could be reasonable justification to try those Evo SLs...

Just looking to survive. Haven’t really done the work as have battled Achilles and knees for about 12 months.

6 weeks ago had barely been doing 10kms without walk breaks but have ramped Sundays up from 15 to 17 to 21 to 26 to 30 over past 6 weeks

Aerobically and cardio wise I’m fine but the S&C isn’t there. Hips and especially knees battling with the distances. I’ll get it done but it’ll be an enjoy the experience run with some definite waking required. Not setting any goal time, just going to enjoy the experience with the group going up

it sucks that your body won’t play ball.
age graded your times are pretty bloody impressive and you deserve a crack at a fast marathon. hope you have a good day and there's a chance for a quick one in the not too distant future.

Tried for my sub 4 hour 50km today.

Just snuck home

The Melbourne Marathon transfer window is open August 1-15.

I can't do it this year due to calf issues, if anyone wants to be a late sign up via transfer shoot me a DM and we'll sort it out.

I'll also edit this post if/when it's taken to confirm it's been snapped up.
Have you got a full entry or a half? A mate of mine is chasing a half one and wanting to go via the transfer window so I can get rid of it for you if you wanted..

I have no idea if he'd be keep for a full, a tbh I don't want to encourage it given he's a relatively new runner.!

Also no good with the calf.. I had to pull out a couple of years back and it is not an easy call to make, but mentally I felt so relieved when I actually made the call and stopped stressing
