^^ thou murphy will end up being the list clogger, it will be one-in, one-out.

No thanks

Yep most likely, but thats what most pies fans would of been saying about Leigh Brown this time last year.

I can't vouch for other Carlton fans, but I'd rather see the progress of someone like Murphy for a year in the reserves than watching Thornton and o'hAilpin continue to rot.

I would say brown had a lot more runs on the board at this time last year than murphy does this year.

But fair call on the second part.

his nickname is spud..........very apt
good wafl player doesnt cut it with the big boys
would be very surprized if Carlton went anywhere near him

I would not be surprised given it was our current recruiter Wane Hughes who drafted him for Freo at pick 12. Must have seen something in him.

For me he lacks intensity. however if he costs us nothing apart from cash we arent going to get burnt from drafting him late in the draft or in the PSD.

Dirk

I always enjoy the 'Let's take a kid,' argument. Any 'kid' in particular so we can discuss their relative strengths and weaknesses? No? So we should just take the 90th best under 18, based purely on the fact that they're young regardless of the depth of the draft, their abilities, their upside or our immediate needs... Great.

Jeff Garlett !

Rather take the long odds a kid being a beauty than taking a rising 26yo list clogger !

I had exactly the same thought. I think it is known as the Sean Charles rule (or for us older dudes, the Stephen Easton rule).

Dare I say the Mick Mansfield Rule.

The club only has to look at Eddie Betts, one of the few U18 players we selected in the PSD, and how well he has performed, compared to the countless number of mature aged hacks we have taken in the PSD.

'Nuff Said.

Don't really rate him, BUT:
Ryan Murphy > Gary Glitter > Brett Thornton > Setanta o'hAilpin

If we pick Murphy up in the pre-season draft, we can offload another list clogger.

Thornton and o'hAilpin won't be there at the end of 2011.
Mite as well speed up the process and get rid of one this year, and give a younger bloke in Murphy a go.

oh..

COME ON, come on.
Come on, come on. Come on, come on, come on.

I SAY!
(get him)

So cash and a wasted spot on a list isn't a factor?

Chris Johnson made sense structurally too, yet we picked Garlett after him.

Pass.

Reminds me a lot of Jack Anthony TBH. He can lead, mark and certainly kick them but God forbid the ball hits the ground or he be asked to lay a tackle. He had a good year back in 06 I think? Just didn't take his chances after that.

Probably wouldn't bother. He is a decent kick for goal but comes across as a bit of a pea heart and for some reason showed just enough to clog the Freo list for a few years.

Don't shoot me but would Neagle be a better option?

Neagle is faster on the lead and in far better physical shape, seriously Murphy is no good.

If Neagle even parked his car at Visy I'd drink petrol.

Beats the hell outta sniffing it Thy! :p:D

Back on Heaver Beaver, the great little man did kick 48 goals for us from the pocket in '93.

I Hope you pick him up but that's only cause I don't like Carlton much :D

You would be mad to take Murphy. As has been said before, good (even very good) WAFL player but simply can't cut it at AFL level. Had a great second half to '06 where he couldn't miss a thing (17.6 from a handful of games) but has done nothing since. Fairly slow, wide turning circle, poor defensive pressure, drops marks under pressure (which he always is because he is slow) and cannot hit the side of a barn from the inside when his confidence is down (which it always is because he doesn't cut it at AFL level).

Murphy is a top bloke and a decent football player but he is not AFL quality anymore. He would be handy to the bullants but that's it. As I said, I hope you take him as it would slow down your list development and you would be less of a threat to us in the future.

that there is exactly the reason he never made it with us, just didnt have that intensity/urgency required, we tried him at full forward, full back, CHB and even in the middle, and he just didnt cut it. goodluck to him and you guys if you get him though, i harbour no ill feelings towards him, he is a helluva wafl player

and as a side note, in that infamous 2009 game against adelaide, spud did kick our one and only goal on that sickening night

Personally, I'm not against Neagle - if not just to turn him into a semi-decent player and rub it into the Bombers!

Wouldn't go near Neagle. His fitness is about the same as Whitnall at the end of his career. If his surname wasn't Neagle he would never have made it onto an AFL list.
