simple question - if you had the choice who would you have playing for your side Patrick Ryder or Jared Brennan?
Both able to play the game as it was meant to be played with style and flamboyance. The sort of players you watch footy to see.
Both similar in their ability to play the key positions and both stepping up to cover the injuries their sides have suffered.

I would take Brennan just cause l love to see him run with the ball in one hand.

Brennan.

Him playing consistently would be unstoppable. He would also add another avenue to goal rather then relying on Fev.

Ryder would just add to our already long young ruck stocks.

Pretty happy with Ryder right at the moment. He'll be remembered as the better player in the longer term. He is younger and will prosper in future years. Brennan has been on the Lions list since 2002.

One thing with Ryder is you could never question his commitment & hunger at the football and at the contests. Could anybody really say Brennan shows these same characteristics at all times with the Lions? I doubt it.

It wasn't long ago either that the Lions wanted to offload Brennan to Essendon during Trade Week.

And playing better football now.

When our key position players are fit, Brennan plays smack-bang in the centre square - he has added a great fitness base and endurance to his game. He has had to plug gaps in defense and in the ruck during the past month due to injuries but still plays in the centre when "resting" from ruck duties.

Seen much of the Lions since 2004? I don't have the stats but I would say Brennan would almost be leading the contested possession for us for this year and last year. His hardness at the footy has been immense the last couple of years. As always, he gets a bad rap because he is the "lair".

No. Essendon tried to poach him.

0/3.

Nah, other way around. Lions did everything they could to keep him at the club as Essendon made a strong pitch to get him.

Brennan has 3 years extra experience in the league so it's not really a fair comparison but I'd still take Ryder in a flash and I'd guarantee that Essendon would laugh at the Lions if a trade was offered at trade week.

Ryder is a legitimate developing big and they always take a bit more time. Ryder's biggest problem will be that his best position is ruck and he'll go back to being 2nd ruck when Hille returns.

Not sure if picking the ball up with one hand is really a factor in the value of a player to a team either.

If you listened to many (not all) Brisbane fans, Brennan is pretty much the best thing since John Coleman - hence my comments before on Ryder's bigger upside. Apparently playing well in consecutive games against Collingwood and picking up the ball with one hand means instant champion. They are still living off that debut against Collingwood six years ago. He is a good player, yes, but just how good could he have been? I wouldn't rate him any higher than that.

And in regards to Brennan and the Essendon link, it depends who you speak too. He was very keen to come to the Bombers and the Lions were keen on getting a deal done to offload him. We won't be losing too much sleep over that.

No seriously, you are wrong. We wanted to keep him badly. I heard of a couple of crisis interventions at Lions HQ with coaches, CEOs and co-captains in attendance.

Brennan would add serious x factor to our midfield and forwardline because we have ruckman like Team Mo' noted.

I'd have to draw the curtains to watch a televised game with Brennan, Judd, Kreuzer, Walker, Brennan, Betts, Garlett and Yarran picked in our 22.

Jamison did everything right in one contest to spoil, but Brennan was just too good and landed like a cat to kick a goal.

Ryder is only just coming into to form, I personally think he is still finding his feet. Very promising.

Brennan for me. Ooozes class.

I understand people saying Brennan over Ryder, I myself have said to many of my friend how much fun it is to watch Brennan, Ryder is only 21 though and this season has shown he has the capabilities of being an elite ruckman of the future if his development continues, he has not played a bad game since hille went down. Brennan has been very very good this year though and I think a better comparison would be a further developed Ryder in a couple of years against Brennan. I only wish essendon would have pushed a bit harder and got him in that trade week! oh if only..........

My God.

Why bother making a comparison if you have only seen one of them play the past 3 years? Those that think Brennan is an inconstant player quite clearly have not watched Brisbane play for years. He is our third most important player on our list, and probably the most consistent now behind Black.

Matthews was right (as he so often was): recognition trails performance by 18 months down south. Not that you need any more evidence of that. Has happened with Adcock, Drummond, Merrett, Macdonald, and with Charman going the other way.

What is it with the OP starting threads about Essendon or Essendon players? THis is the first time it hasn't been a blatent troll. I guess the last red card has caused him to be more subtle this time around.

FWIW This is one of the more ridiculous comparisons you will find. Different types of players at completely different stages of their careers.

Brennan has improved in leaps and bounds ever since he re signed with the Bears and has become a very important player for them.

Ryder has relished being moved into the ruck and it is fast tracking his development.

Both clubs would be very happy with the player they have.

Furthermore if you look at the statistics for this year alone, Ryder has had 140 disposals, 80 contested, 74% disposal efficiency, 59 tackles, and 5 goals playing as a ruckman. Brennan has had 166 disposals, 77 contested, 66% disposal efficiency, 39 tackles and 7 goals playing as a spare parts man. They are both having excellent season, but you would just be plain stupid to not see the potential upside of Ryder as a 21 year old.

FWIW...both players with loads of natural ability, both players relishing the roles they have been forced to take due to circumstances, both players playing similar exciting brands of football, both players having played or playing ruck, defence, attack & go-to roles, both players with the ability to be stand out ornaments to the game, not much difference in their respective builds 5cm's to ryder 5kg to brennan. not a massive difference in age and brennan has been in the game longer....overall a ridiculous comparison.

Gee jimi you are such a precious little man and your opinion means so much to me, wow i got a red card for using one of your own quotes against you, stop boo hooing and stop thinking that if someone mentions an essendon player in a positive light that it is somehow a troll.

if the pies had either of them i would be very happy, but in jimi's alternate universe that must mean i'm trolling ryder/essendon

ps... it's soooooo funny how you call the lions the BEARS.........HA HA HA HA HA HA....ha ha ha ha.....sew my sides up....

Brennan is fifth behind Black, Power, Brown and Rich for contested poss. I dare say he'd be up with Black & Power if he played the same amount of games.

Brennan just far more gifted and versatile.

Can ruck or play forward and is now a monster in the midfield.

X factor personified.

You can have Brennan, we'll keep Ryder.:thumbsu:

I'll obviously say Brennan. I've never seen a clearance player like him. Creates space where there is none, and takes the ball away from a packed contest as though there was no one there. So mercurial.
