News Saints High Performance Manager Joining Us

Sorry guys, I re read my post and it comes across more negative than I intended.

Just one minute we are getting a guy like Burgess who has ten years experience at a number of elite teams as being the number one guy in charge, to the next day getting a guy that has had 10 months experience as being the number one guy. He wasn't at Hawthorn.

I just know how important this area is so I hope the club know what they are doing. I trust Dimma so I'm behind this move, but with a little trepidation.

All good Bobby, I know you were hard for Burgess, but as you know - how often do you win the battles with the missus?

At least we were in the fight this time, in the past we would have gotten the "thanks but no thanks" months ago.

A couple of things I'd look forward to on this appointment:

- again we look to have properly gone through a proper process, and not just hired on reaction. As most of our footy dept hirings have worked to date, this gives me a lotta faith.

- The Saints have an aging list, and he had them running and hitting hard IMO. I know some on their board are knocking him, but I suspect its the usual bag the leaving guy thing we all do.

- He doesn't have 10 years experience heading up a team, but he has been working for some time in very good programs, and has had a year to cut his teeth on the major job. This means its likely he will be hungry, and looking to innovate and make his mark.

- could be the dogs, who in the paper have said they are about to start their process looking for a new guy now

Really? I must have missed that.
I knew we were going to Cairns, but didn't know we were ditching that Arizona thing.
Arizona is 20 hours each way anyway. Kinda lose a few days of preseason.
Whatever. Hope it works

Maybe RFC can confirm it, but im 99% positive thats what i heard. Also from what i gather, high altitude is only 100% effective if you spend at least 2 weeks at it. Last year from memory we only stayed for 1 week.

You would expect that Dimma and Benny would have always had a plan B up their sleeve, especially with the huge go home factor from our first candidate. While it means we didn't get our man that's just the way it goes sometimes. We've been pretty good at this kind of thing over the last 3 years so I'd be amazed if the due diligence wasn't done. We're not the 90's Tigers any more.

10 simple steps to get fit for summer - Peter Burge

With summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to grab your bathers, sandals and SPF 30 and start to prepare for a much needed dose of vitamin d in the form of sunshine (hopefully!)...

1. Drink water...
2. Get your greens in!
3. Get a workout buddy.
4. Set your alarm and go!
5. Eat more.
6. Eliminate sugars!
7. Keep moving.
8. Keep it Lean!
9. Set yourself up for success.
10. Eat in and cook!

Author’s tip: I have always worked on a theory that to look and feel great it is largely influenced by what goes into your mouth...

Read in more detail.

1) We were after the Liverpool guy as the best option - didn't work out

2) StK coach wanted a different approach than Burge. Interesting as I would think the fitness professional would know more than the coach about ... fitness.

3) StK cut Burge and he becomes available at the same time as we don't get our first choice.

4) We get someone the footy dept knows, and hopefully respects. Maybe, they talked to him as a backup for the position if we didn't get No. 1 option.

5) He starts knowing AFL and being ready to do the job. We're happy, but not over the moon (footy dept).

6) Conspiracy theories and rants start on BigFooty. No one in RFC cares much about said rants.

7) finals happen, preseason, trading and drafting - we forget about this and talk about how great our trades/picks are/might be - or how appallingly incompetent the club is.

8) Season 2013 - we don't give a stuff about all the crap above and get on with our lives. Except if fitness/injuries are an issue then we trash Burge.

9) I make a plunger full of coffee.

Craig Cameron said Cairns. And Arizona last year was not altitude. We were in Tucson and Scottsdale.

Ridiculous to think that we were only ever going after one candidate at a time.
There would have been a multitude of candidates from the moment Hornsby resigned, so to think we went chasing Burgess and then only moved onto an Burge after missing out is just silly talk

Hey RFC_Official, just wonder if there is a handover period between Matt H and Burge? Would have thought that would be the ideal situation, but not sure if Matt was happy to move on as quick as possible. Cheers.

And Burgess has yet to sign with anyone, so as far as im concerned its only internet speculation that Burge was our second choice.

[thats unless i have missed some official news]

Or Burgess has outright turned us down and as Port have announced nothing he may have done the same to them - they just wont say anything till they have a man too.

burgess still has a year remaining on his contract with liverpool.
That could be why no one has announced snaring him?

T.b, he wasn't at Hawks full stop or wasn't in the no 1 role at Hawks ?? Cos I thought some one flashed up a photo of him in Hawks gear (looked like a club photo, but I'm only guessing).

He was strength and conditioning coach at Hawks, as opposed to high performance manager.

Good to have this appointment sorted early - gives him time to do his research on the players and make his preparations for pre season when the boys come back.

I'll back the club with this decision, I'm sure there was a process and strict criteria that needed to be met before the best candidate(s) were offered the role. If the club rates this guy, he has my confidence until proven wrong. :thumbsu:

Those who know more about this area than me (almost everyone), what sort of priorities do you think Dimma would have for our list in this preseason?
Bulk?
Speed?
Endurance?

And what sort of program/ focus would normally accompany that goal?

Burpees, running uphill and chin ups root me, but I suspect it's a little more scientific at an AFL club...

Sorry, I worded it weird. He was at Hawthorn but wasn't the number one. He wasn't even the number two really. But if Dimma tried to get him in 2009, then he obviously rates him and that is good enough for me, for now.

I think overall conditioning and core strength would be suitable. I think we need more fitness into us. Players need to increase their Vo2 levels to run out games and make better decisions late in the game when fatigue has set in. I look at us and then refer to the best teams and we are not as strong (one element is age) or as powerful. In a word we need overall improvement and different players require different elements more than other things.

Deledio is the prototype really. He has it all. Size, strength, pace, power, fitness. Take Dustin Martin and he has the power and the pace, but not the fitness and lacks the conditioning that Deledio has of course because of his age. Get him to Deledio level and look out. He should have the capability.

As much as most will think these guys are glorified Personal Trainers, it's a very complex situation to manage 44 players or so and understand where they are at, where they have to get to, and how to manage that taking in intangibles like injuries, mental capacity (will power) and over training. A designated program will need to be written for each one of these players and will have to factor in football training also. Collingwood have it spot on. They are the best. Have been for ages. Sydney have it spot on. Also been right up there for ages. Hawthorn and WCE are next in line. I rate Adelaide too. Who are the top teams in the comp at the moment? Exactly.

We have the facilities now to be able to be the best, all that was missing was the intellect to get us there. I sure hope this guy is the one who can. Massive job to take on.

One key thing I think people are over looking is that Hornsby was helping us in the process of finding the best suitor to take over from his role as HPM.

That's a good summary Tigerbob. I would agree with what you've said. I would suggest players may be grouped into years at the club. Say 1-3 yrs ,4-6yrs etc they would do certain things together then specialized Activities based on position say midfield. Then also be given specific areas as individuals to work on as well ie bulk, speed, agility etc . Much of this would also be based on initial baseline data collected by sport science guys in fitness testing protocols. Also based on position demands as well, ie midfield has greater endurance demands than say full forward and full back more repeat sprint efforts, explosiveness stronger emphasis. Just a few thoughts :)
