Fellas,

I have come across some very good info.

I work in finance and my company does alot of work with Sam Days old man. I never knew it was his dad until this morning. However apparently they don't want him going to GC because they want family around him and if GC are going to draft him he will go and play baseball, but football is his number 1 choice. This could mean we get him.

Interesting stuff...

good post, would be intresting if you could ask the old man what he would think about wearing the no 12 for the yellow & black in 2011 ??

a few headlines after a few years

Tigers Gaff up with pick 4
A New Day Dawns At Tigerland
The New Darling At Punt Road

Families often pull that stuff pre draft but I rarely pans out. Ultimately he will go where he is picked if he really wants to play AFL footy. If not, then maybe we shouldn't waste our time? I want players fully dedicated to playing AFL, not players who are talented enough but will just bugger off to play another sport if they don't get what they want. I'd be very surprised if this is anything but a bluff.

Day has more upside than Darling and 1st time draftees cannot put a price on their heads

Thanks Lobster, I was sitting here thinking WTF are people going on about... rookies putting prices on their heads? I don't think so!

We need to make every move to get Sam Day.

He wont last to pick four but we could do another deal e.g Tambling + pick 4 for pick one.

My rationale is we can get quality midfielders with our PP and second round pick, but not quality forwards that late.

Day would actually complete our forward line.

HF: Nason - Day - Nahas

FF: Morton - Griffiths - Riewoldt

Our backline is really beginnning to take shape aswell, meaning every year after this year we can use our first round pick brininging in quality midfielders.

LOL.... I thought this would be a suggestion of an annual memorial day to honour the young bloke from Croydon who rang up MMM (I think) a year or 2 back and asked one Mr Danny Frawley to explain whether or not he held any personal remorse for the legacy he'd left behind in the form of one of the most shithouse playing lists the competition has ever seen.;)

Play on....

You are on the money
GOLD Coast target Sam Day may turn his back on the AFL to chase a professional basketball or baseball career in the United States.
The 17-year-old Prince Alfred College student looms a top-10 draft pick this year but may join the American college system.
His uncle, Tim, played baseball for Australia and now works at the University of Florida.
"Definitely soon (I'll have to decide). Professional anything would be amazing. All three sports I'm not quite sure yet," he said.
"It changes between the sports but at the moment I'm enjoying all three of them.
"I'll take everything as it comes and have a fair crack at everything."
At 196cm and 94kg, Day is a key position player on the football field and equally at home in the ruck.
Last year he was the SA under-18 centre-half-back as a 16-year-old, and next month will tour South Africa with the AIS AFL Academy.
Day produced stunning results at AIS-AFL testing in January, recording a vertical leap of 81cm - 3cm higher than Eagle sensation Nic Naitanui's draft-camp best, second best 20m sprint and second in the agility test.
New AFL franchise the Gold Coast has four of the first five draft picks this year, and the club's media manager Greg Price yesterday confirmed its interest in Day.
He said recruiting manager Scott Clayton was "in the process" of organising a meeting.
"My understanding is we haven't had an opportunity to speak to Sam (yet)," Price said. "We think we've got a pretty exciting offer to make around the Gold Coast."
Day is fresh from a season of A Grade baseball with Sturt and will captain PAC's basketball and football teams this winter.
PAC basketball coach, retired Adelaide 36ers legend Mark Davis, said he had no doubt Day could play NBL if he wanted.
"I truly believe if he constantly stays on the uphill slide and keeps his head right, he's a future NBL player and all the rest of it," Davis said.
"I have a lot of respect for him and what he brings to the table - to be able to listen to what he's learned, then go out and execute it."
Day missed two weeks with a punctured liver last year but has impressed for SANFL club Sturt in its reserves trial games. Sturt football manager Duane Massey said Day would have been drafted last year if he was eligible and would have played league footy in the next few weeks if it wasn't for college commitments.
"If he stays injury free he's a certainty to go (in the draft) . . . how high depends on how he performs," Massey said.
Day is the grandson of SANFL Hall of Famer, Ian and is now training every night for either basketball or football.
PAC sport director Gary Jenkinson said Day was easily "the best ruckman" in the college competition.
"Because he played basketball in the morning, then footy in the afternoon last year, we played him as a key forward," Jenkinson said.
Jenkinson said Day's body had "changed dramatically" in the past year and he was in "extremely good condition".
If the youngster chooses football and is snapped up early by the Gold Coast, he would become PAC's second first-round draft pick in as many years after Jack Trengove was drafted at No. 2 to Melbourne last year.

He likes the idea of playing in Victoria

Sam Day, still growing at 196cm and 94kg, this year will choose between Australian rules and a college scholarship in baseball or basketball.
AFL recruiters rate him a top-five draft prospect this year, and a potential No.1.
The freakish Day, from Adelaide, has recorded a vertical leap of 81cm - 3cm higher than Eagles sensation Nic Naitanui's draft-camp best.
The Herald Sun understands the 17-year-old has family and friends in Melbourne, and likes the idea of playing in Victoria.
But Gold Coast, which has the first three picks in this year's draft, is set to pounce.
AIS-AFL high performance coach Jason McCartney said Day was a "super talent".
"It's frightening how much potential he has," McCartney said. "He is so athletically gifted he can play a variety of positions. Personally, I think Sam wants to play footy."
Day's height will have a major bearing on his decision.
If Day continues to grow, a multi-million-dollar NBA or Major League Baseball career may beckon.
A rocket-armed first baseman and power hitter, Day has already knocked back an invitation to join the Major League Baseball Academy.
"When he bats he can smash it over the fence," said Baseball South Australia development manager Paul Chandler.
In basketball, his slam-dunking aerobatics are said to stun onlookers.
His father, Chris Day, said Sam would keep his sporting options open.
"Sam has a passion to play AFL but he hasn't given up on his other sporting dreams either," Chris said.
Day produced stunning results for a tall player at AIS-AFL testing in January, recording the second-best 20m sprint, the second-best vertical leap and finishing second in the agility test.
Sturt talent and development manager Colin Casey said: "He can ride on the backs of players and mark it and he can run at full pace, pick the footy up from his ankles and handball. He's a bit special."
South Australian under-18 coach Brenton Phillips said he had not seen a more exciting prospect in 28 years.
"I rate Sam as highly as (last year's No.2 draft pick) Jack Trengove," he said

I would like to get Darling. If Richmond want to use pick 4 on a midfielder then I would like another Martin or Morabito type - big bodied, fast and with great kicking penetration. I have not read anywhere about any mids this year who fit this description - they seem to be too short and lack something.
Can Darling kick 50-55m accurately? Does he have good pace and agility?
From what I have read about Darling it sounds like he has a lot of grunt, is a very hard worker and a good mark. I want Richmond to recruit to gain a harder edge and become a physically intimidating team.

At 190cm Darling could be a good forward and rotate through the midfield.

There is tampering and then there is "tampering"

It is known by some that Griffiths was being strongly considered by Port Adelaide as one of their 3 first round picks for the 2009 draft. But Griffiths was not keen on moving interstate and his Mother felt so strongly about not wanting her son to go to PA that she lied about her and Ben's availability to meet with the PA recruiters and even got to the point where she and the rest of Ben's family pretended to not be home when recruiters came knocking in order to deter PA from picking him up.

not bad hey?

Josh Toy

is one of GC's contracted 17 years olds from last year :(

we should offer pick 4 for him. We'd be mad not to, and the worst they'll say is "no".

So glad we didn't go Butcher at 3. Griffiths was a better choice at 19...packaging Dustin Martin..

Pretty ridiculous assertion mate. Butcher is a freak and if he fulfills his potential will be one of the best forwards in the competition.

You are right though, Martin/Griff package certainly the right option.
