Does this mean that his "contract" has some get out clause? I can never quite figure out how contracts are so readily broken. Almost wonder what is the point of a contract, at least in terms of it's length, if it was 4 years and he is gone in 1.

I'm gutted about this :( Oh well, I guess I should just be happy that we got to have him at all. Still seems surreal that he came here, and hopefully we can send him on his way on the back of a flag.

The poster who broke this on Bigfooty a couple months ago claimed he had a falling out with Simpson and decided to pack his bags and move back to Melbourne. Seems he was right on the money. My guess is the club has know he was leaving for a while now.

I thought he had a sick family member? I am sure he mentioned something in one of his interviews...

If we make a grand final run, the board will call him the catalyst to our 2018 season, just like Pyke was apparently our 2015 catalyst
Will he stay for the finals? Would it depend on which club he goes to?

Interesting that the article on the AFL website seems definite that SAM MITCHELL will be returning to Victoria to continue his AFL assistant coaching career. He must have something in place ... mustn't he?

It's really pointless having multi year contracts for coaches. Give them 12 month contracts. Its not like you can force a trade or anything if they want to leave.

It may actually be true, however I would say that makes Simmo an even better Head Coach. The best leaders aren’t always the best at everything they are doing but surround themselves with others who make them better.

Disappointed that Sam is going. I think he is an awesome asset as a coach, but I’m certain we will replace him with another quality assistant.

There is a selfish and distasteful side to Sam that does not get aired in public. He has had shitty confrontations when at the Hawks and with hospital staff when his baby was born. I am sending a potential run in at the club and he was called on it. No inside running - more so a cat doesn’t change its spots.

Pity as our midfield is looking so much better this year and I was thinking he had done a good job.

He still under contract for 2 years. If it was a player they'd need to be traded. He can get out of his contract but he must pay WCE the sum of his 2 remaining years if he wants out of it, otherwise go to AFL and tell them he's still under contract so he can't work somewhere else

The hard ass approach may benefit the club this time (although more likely just put up a minor road block for another team) but in the long run, I think it would make it near impossible to recruit quality staff in the future.

You could take a job on the other side of the country and work for an arseh*le corporation, or stay at the club you played your entirety career and be looked after nicely. This would likely become the perception of WCE

Well he isn’t a player.

And an uncommitted coach is not something u want around. But I do wonder whether he actually was thinking he would stay for 4 years anyway before he came here

This is interesting. The sick family member is realy the only thing that makes sense. Could not see WCE happy to let him out of his contract just because he wants to go home with no other reason.

Also that he would tell the club at this time in the season. If he was unsure what the reaction from the club would be it would be a risk for him. A lot of other assistants that have moved clubs at the end of the season have basically been asked to leave when the old club is told about it. Which means Sam would be out for finals. Not sure I would be happy about that, think his finals experience would be gold should we make it deep in.
