I still marvel at the fact that Lethal once had 40+ possessions and kicked 11 goals.

I'm sorry, but any of the muppets in the media pumping up the flavour of the week need to be reminded that that's what the greatest player was capable of.

35 possessions and a goal isn't goal to cut it, sorry Gaz.

:)And how many of Gaz'x 35 possessions would be easy 1-2-3 handballs received. It's a joke!

So the consensus is that Sam has no claim at all to being this great clubs greatest ever player?
Lethal aside people need to stop living in the past.

Your question involves the clubs history so it makes sense to go thru other players in history

But yeh the consensus is we all disagree with you

You can't tell people to stop loving in the past when you are talking about greatest ever.

You have Sam in front of Lethal, that's your choice, most aren't going to agree with you.

I wish I remember lethal in his prime but I only remember the tail end of his career same with Knights
I missed huddo completely.
Of the guys I've seen in their prime I'd still have Dunstall ahead of Sammy but that's just me

Sam Mitchell plays for another club, he's not a Hawthorn player now.

So, who's living in the past?

I would throw Peter Knights in with Matthews. He was, and still is the player I loved to watch more than any other.

Ok.
So you have no respect or love for him then you are truly a clown.

I'd put Tom Mitchell ahead of Sam Mitchell.

Tom's never played a bad game for the Hawks.

I'm of the age where I first started watching footy in the early 90s, so haven't seen many of our greats, but I put Barney as number one based on his record and reputation, with someone like Knights back a peg or two. One name that I don't see mentioned often enough is Graeme Arthur. Not just because he's our first premiership captain, but because no less a judge than John Kennedy rated him the equal of Matthews (I believe it was on Open Mike). If someone who is probably the most important figure in our club's history is happy to say that, then that's good enough for me.

As for Mitchell, I'd put him at five, behind the best player I was privileged to actually see at Hawthorn, Jason Dunstall, and just ahead of players the calibre of Platten, Langford, Brereton and Hodge.

As I have said many times before, you cannot accurately judge players from different eras, there are just too many variables. For one thing you are comparing professional athletes with part time footballers. Not to mention the big advancements in sports science, playing surfaces, and equipment.

The name Graham Arthur should always be raised when the subject is great Hawthorn players. As far as I am concerned so should Colin Austin. As for comparing Matthews and Mitchell, well they play/ed entirely different games. Where Leigh would go straight through, Sam side steps; in both cases the opposition can't tackle their man.

We are the luckiest supporters in the land, and I expect our run at more flags to continue for some time to come, but don't ask who are our best 5 or 10 players, because, IMHO that is an impossible list to compile.

Gonna hate him in a Eagles guernsey... miss him more than anyonr we've lost this off-season
It will be confronting sure, but try and look at the bigger picture...The HFC will go on proudly nonetheless.

We have just finished arguably the best dynasty in the history of the VFL/AFL and have managed to draft 2 outstanding midfielders to assist our other talented engine room future proofing our biggest weakness.

Exciting times.

Watch them grow it won't be long until we're seriously back in the mix

Sam is one of the greats. Immense character.

I'm sorry that he's finishing his career at another club, and it is bitter that I'll be in awe about some of the things he will no doubt do on the field at WCE, but it won't change his legacy one iota.

Good to see you speak on behalf of everyone.
Tosser.
Hey Zucchini people are allowed to have a different opinion without you acting like a kid and resort to name calling.

I don't know how old you are but I get you think Sam is the greatest Hawk player of all time I really do, however I saw Lethal in his prime and I am here to tell you he is and more than likely will always be the greatest Hawk.

Earlier on you said about Sam being the greatest vote getter in the umpires award and I am here to tell you that award lost all credibility when Lethal never won at least 3 of them.

8 Best and fairest for Lethal says it all.

Now I have been around for a very long time and seen all our premierships. I would not even try to rate a single player as our greatest of all time. Lethal is probably my vote and Mitch would certainly be up near the top of the list, but I am not even sure he rates above Hodgey, who has much more to consider than mere Brownlow votes.

Regardless of this GOAT talk, there is only one player that I would actually drag my drunken arse out of bed to go and watch. One who has not figured at all in these discussions. That player is Peter Hudson. Being a supporter means you love go and watch the game, watch the team. As we all do. But Huddo was actually a reason to go on his own.

I agree with you about Huddo I would put Cyril in that discussion as well, I love watching the kid strutt his stuff.

I too have seen all the premierships and one name that should be mentioned is an undersized ruckman named Don Scott. While not a prolific ball winner the sheer mongrel in him won Hawthorn so many games. Obviously not the best player of all time but in my opinion right up there with the best.

I don't. Sam is the best I've seen and I also saw Lethal.

There was a period from around 1973 to 1978, when Lethal Leigh was aged 22 - 27, when he was the outstanding footballer of the competition. He just smashed games like no one has done. There were some pretty good players in that era but no one came close.

That we won only 2 premierships in that time was a total waste of his dominance.

Leigh couldn't win a Brownlow because he played too close to the edge: his flying elbows caused a bit of consternation among the opposition!

But he was easily the greatest player.
