Every Hawk supporter who says "Is this the way to treat a Great of our club" should listen to the SEN interview with Sam.

He can't praise Clarko enough for looking after the interests of Sam and his family post his playing career.

It's a genuis move by Clarko albeit one that no one likes the thought of ATM.

The only thing i can think of is that Hodge will also retire next year and so they will also move him into a coaching role - this could be the reason
Nope, best for him to get experience outside of the hawthorn system. See how other clubs are run. he will make a great coach but he needs a broader experience. Clarko was a player at 2 clubs, an assistant under Watson at the Saints, coached SANFL with centrals and an assitant at under Chocco at Port. Bevo was a player at 3 clubs. Coached ammos to 3 successive GF's and was an assistant at the Pies and the Hawks. Cameron was at 2 clubs, an assitant at the Dogs and an assistant with us. Compare that to Hird & Voss especially. Minimal, if any, external experience other than the club they played for. You could include Bucks under that too. Minimal external exposure. It's a good move for Sammy

Sam leaving and taking up a coaching role at another club I can cope with, in fact I was expecting it and think it is the right move (get out of the Hawthorn bubble), but running around in another clubs colours... no that I don't like at all. I mean seriously folks, he just won our B&F! In what universe do you trade your current B&F winner? Nope, not happy at all :straining:

Sammy doesn't owe us anything. He's given everything for us over 307 games and is a legend of the club. Will hate to see him in another jumper, but it's a classy move by the club and we should wish him well if he goes.

In terms of what we get in return, I can't see it being much, maybe a 1st/2nd round pick upgrade or two that might help us get TOM and JOM over the line. I know it's only a 2-pick difference, but might clinch the deal with Swans/Suns and WCE will probably be able to get the player they want in the draft regardless, so no great loss to them.

OK - this would be literally giving up our best player. In fact our club's second best player of all time. I hate it and won't be able to watch him in a WCE jumper.

I do trust the club and believe of all players he deserves every opportunity to forge the next part of his life. He'll be a wonderful coach and I guess we'll likely miss out on him just like we missed out on Leigh Matthews coaching career. Good luck and THANKS Mitch. We won 4 premierships in large part thanks to you and a small group of elite players and coaches (15-20 people).

No 5? My vote is for Cyril. No one embodies what PC stands for more than him. Team-oriented, humble, tough, fair, passionate. If not him, then I am sure the right player will be chosen. If we get JOM, then he goes inside #1 or #33 (which will then have its own legacy attached).

Sad day. But thanks for everything Mitch.

As it's been since the #5's return, it'll be the decision of the Crimmins family as to who wears it.

Hope they decide soon, my son got a new jumper this year, and refreshed the number 5 he's been wearing for the last 10 years. Hadn't got around to getting Sam's signature on the new jumper, missed his chance now :-(

Heart broken. Would have preferred to have him as a one club player. If it makes him happy and it's a good career move, I understand but you just get emotionally tied up with a long term great club man. The Marcel Marceau of communication, he could tell a whole story with one move as the Bombers would appreciate.

Sam would walk into a coaching role at any of the 18 clubs. No need for this.
Unless he has told Clarko 2017 is his last year and WC have offered their first pick.

Don't go Sam! Club legends should stay and finish at their club. This undermines loyalty. I love Sam Mitchell, he is a premiership captain of your club. My love of Aussie Rules isn't about winning at all costs? (Essendon!) it's about much much more.

The good news story this year isnt that Pav got to 350 games. It is that the Dogs won the flag.

That is the game.

It will suck seeing him in another jersey, but Clarko clearly has a plan, and is smarter than any of us.

Im sure Clarko hates it more than any of us too. But knows that he has to make the tough decisions.

I'd rather lose Breust' or Langford than Sam ., this Is shit:(
Go have a listen to the SEN interview because Sam does not think it's shit he actually thinks it's the best thing for him and his young families future.

Do you seriously think that Clarko or the club like it anymore than you do?

It's called planning for the future and our club does it better than most.

Whilst initially a massive shock, if the trade nets us Mckenzie then I would be in favour.

As has been said Mitchell is very keen on the move, not being shoved out the door, so no problem in regards to club morale.

Although mitch our best player this year, there is no doubt he will begin to slow down and we can expect his output to drop significantly.
Although I was hopeful the club we're going to have a tilt at next years flag, it seems they're looking towards a couple years from now and I think (provided we land Mckenzie) it's typical hawthorn being ahead of the curve and getting something worth while for a legend on his last legs.

Best of luck in the future Sammy.

I have nothing wrong with him looking after life AFTER football. But that is for after his playing career.

Would be so wrong to rob the fans of the opportunity to clap him off as he retires a 6 time premiership player. This is worse than trading croad.

As Mitchell himself said it's in his family's best interest to move now.
Kids, school, etc.
Footy players are humans with lives just like us and you're upset you can't clap him off? Please.

I heard it but I think Sam was being a bit too nice about it. This isn't just about Sam's post playing career, otherwise the original plan for him to go to West Coast to coach would still be in place. Hawthorn are expecting something out of this too. I can't blame them because that's how it is these days but I don't like it. As someone else said, it undermines loyalty. Fan loyalty is the only loyalty left in the game and once that is gone the whole thing will come crashing down like a house of cards.

I hate to see Mitch go, but fair call this. When we think of Derm do we visualise him in either a Swans or Pies jumper?

Not many remember Mick McGuane was a Carlton player.

Shit, just noticed no opposition supporters tag. Was that always there?

Sorry folks.

I think we will get a good deal out of it, and then people will go from gloating to anger. Other clubs will whinge that we are in cahoots with enemies and they will cry.

In Sam's universe where he has to do what's best for his family who are with him long after we stop clapping him onfield.

I'll be sad to see him go if it happens. I was looking forward to watching him run around for us again next year but I'm looking at this like a retirement. As far as I'm concerned Sam is retiring this year and just padding his super a little before taking on his new job.

Reminds me of Williams going to the bombers or Brown to GC. Got to think about life after footy.

Thanks for your service Sam, my favorite Hawk in this era.
