This is also a win win for the simple minds at the AFL.They will undoubtedly schedule 2 fixtures against West Coast while believing at the same time that we will be weakened.

Trading away not only our best current midfielder and reigning B&F winner but also a club legend, Brownlow Medallist and top 5 Hawk of all time. As another poster said - trading our soul. We picked this fat kid up from nothing and together we made him a legend - 4 flags, captain of the club, All-Australian etc etc.

I'm shocked - feel as if the club owes us an explanation. I know this could help us net JOM or Tom Mitch or whatever but nah - I don't really care, it won't feel the same.

Sam was pick 36. Imagine if we got similar back for him. Looks like the plan is to reinvent the list and the game plan then go hard in 2018

Being 33/34...we can't expect too much in return.

Any chance that we could swap their 1st round pick with our 2nd? Maybe a swap of later picks if that is too in our favour?

That would give us 2 first round picks this year and the Brad hill compo. Would love to keep next years first rounder to be able to go shopping again in 12mths time!

Remember when Chappell, Lillee and Marsh all retired at the same time ?
Its hard to do without ready made replacements.

Even with Mitch going we have Hodgey, Burgers and Gibbo still there and will probably finish up next year.

They can Hawthornize TOM and JOM.

Tough move, but the timing is right with 2 mids coming in.

Perfectly executed move that benefits everyone.

Outsider's view: If he does go, you might struggle for a few rounds but eventually level out/get back on track

I can see Mitchell is still a huge player for you (25+ disposals almost every game), so you'll get a new gameplan. Confuse the rest of the comp for a while.

ABSOLUTELY shattered with this news !!!!!!!

Has been our premier player and premier midfielder for at least the last five years. If it wasn't for Sammy holding our middle together in many games this season, we WOULD have not won some of those very close games and maybe just maybe missed the finals. HE IS THAT IMPORTANT TO OUR STRUCTURES.

He IS our most important player.

Need to go calm down ............ NOT HAPPY Jan !!!!!!!!!! :'(:'(:'(:'(:'(

Oh...And if i hear another so called EXPERT on our forum saying don't worry we will never be trading one of our Premiership heroes to facilitate some minnow club im gonna go nuclear !!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I blame the NWO and elite bankers ........... This doesn't sit well at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Sam Mitchell ....... You're a LEGEND ......... A HAWTHORN LEGEND !!! :thumbsu:

It wasn't months ago it was only two weeks ago and it came out of left field for Sam too.

He spoke to west coast 12 months ago about coaching only.
Clarko raised it again on brownlow day this year.
Mitch and family have long intended to go west, not totally left field. Now suits his family better.

The club and Sam seem to be ok with this. That's obvious.
They've come straight out and addressed it in the media.

This is a calculated trade(plan). Something will follow this, whether it is this year or next.

We are in the eye of the storm, but this could yet be another masterstroke which we are celebrating in 12-18 months time.

Why? Wasn't Sam Mitchell's explanation good enough?

He needs to work elsewhere first. You need to see how other people do business, get different experiences. As others have mentioned in 5+ years he may be looking at a senior gig, perhaps with us.
This. He'll be our first head coach at Dingley!
