Has Clarko turned into Kevin Sheedy?

In what way?

Have you listened to Sam's interview?

I watched the Croad video last night.
Yes I was crying when I listened to the Sam's interview but the way Sam's handled it and the reasoning, I'm actually very proud with everyone involved.

Is it just me or would we have been better off leaving Mitchell uncontracted therefore forcing the AFL to give us compo through free agency?

Cant see us getting more through a trade then what compo we would have got.

This is the most professional, straight up, and surprisingly brilliant thing I've ever heard.

Everyone MUST listen to Sammy on SEN.

Hawthorn, Clarko, Mitchell, Mitchell's family, West Coast and Simmo should all be commended on their progressive thinking. Sam is going to be a great coach. Getting outside the Hawthorn environment to develop himself is vital (we've seen too many favourite sons just f#ck things up.. Hi James!) The fact that this has been a 'secret' for over 2 weeks is also a thing of beauty.

Don't get me wrong... I love Mitch. I'm gutted that this is happening from a 'bleed brown and gold' perspective.

But this may actually change AFL Trade week for the better. It's time to stop the bu11$hit posturing that some clubs persist with (Hi Gold Coast!) and get on with running your club, looking after the welfare of your players, and being bl00dy honest with yourselves and your fans.

And my hypothetical trade... 14 and Mitch for 12 (and maybe a swap of 3rd rounders)

Yep. If you think Alistair Clarkson is a manager who is looking after and developing his staff member. It's a fantastic thing in my opinion.

Let's say for example:

1) Mitchell plays for 1 more year on $300-$500K
2) Instead he goes to West Coast for 2 years on more money with a guaranteed gig in coaching in a DIFFERENT program to Hawthorn's

So he's getting Sam more money while also developing him for his career after football. Don't forget, Simpson was an assistant at Hawthorn so it's not like Mitchell won't be in familiar surrounds. Sam was also thinking of moving to Perth post football anyway so he gets there 1 year earlier than he would have, with more coin in his pocket and a guaranteed coaching job.

Hard to spin this one in a bad way outside the standard "OMG HE'S A LEGEND HOW CAN CLARKO DO THIS!!!"

Seriously, the number of players who are remembered for the club they played at for a year or two before retiring is tiny as, if any at all.

Could we involve swapping pick 14 with 12 in this deal? I feel that we have been more than fair with Gold Coast up until now....however they don't seem to be coming to the party. Might be best if we can swap to pick 12 and just send JOM into the draft and pick him up with that pick. Would save us trading out a player and would give a big up yours to the Gold Coast too. Front load his contract so that he would still be there at pick 12?

This will be Mitchell for late second round or early third round pick + Mckenzie or Mitch brown. Complain and moan all you like but that's what the deal will be.

Remember when Chappell, Lillee and Marsh all retired at the same time ?
Its hard to do without ready made replacements.

Even with Mitch going we have Hodgey, Burgers and Gibbo still there and will probably finish up next year.

They can Hawthornize TOM and JOM.

Tough move, but the timing is right with 2 mids coming in.

Perfectly executed move that benefits everyone.
Lewis has been moving like a 35 year old as well

People are honestly questioning Clarko? I am feeling dead inside at the thought of Mitchell leaving - but honestly, Clarko has the credits in the bank for me to not question his strategy going forward. Doesn't mean I love the moving parts - but over 11 years Clarko has delivered for us all time and time again. Are you not entertained!!

He spoke to west coast 12 months ago about coaching only.
Clarko raised it again on brownlow day this year.
Mitch and family have long intended to go west, not totally left field. Now suits his family better.

Obviously I was referring to the playing bit.

Outsider's view: If he does go, you might struggle for a few rounds but eventually level out/get back on track

I can see Mitchell is still a huge player for you (25+ disposals almost every game), so you'll get a new gameplan. Confuse the rest of the comp for a while.

Agree. Players come, players go. You deal with it and move forward. We haven't got much wrong at Hawthorn in the past 5-10 years, so I'm happy to wait and see what comes of it.

Can I quote this into B13? :D
