The more I think about it and the more I read about GC digging in their heels on this, the more I think this is about getting O'Meara.

Maybe it's wishful thinking (and meant for the 'Hypothetical' thread), but assuming we had our cap all worked out to get Tom, Vickery and JOM. They've planned for this for weeks, maybe even months now.

They probably didn't count on GC being as stubborn as they are. So they've given up trying to trade for JOM, as evidenced by giving Sydney our first pick, which they could've bundled with CG and given them a player like Shiels or Langford and they trade pick 14 (and maybe 19) to Brisbane for Hanley.

Of course that wont happen now because GC are being stubborn or Brisbane wanted more.

So lets say they had $600K set aside for JOM. They will clear between $400 to $600K with Sam's contract (assuming reports are correct), and front end year 1 of JOM's contract to $1M+ and tell him to go to the draft. Even Essendope doesn't have that kind of cap space, nor would Carlton even if they got rid of Gibbs because they want something in return.

JOM comes to us at no player/picks cost. Not without risk, but we've called bluffs before (taking Roughy at 2 knowing Richmond were unlikely to take Buddy at 5).

I'm hoping this is the 'bigger picture' that we're missing

Are you saying PSD because thats where a contract can be nominated? If so we still get picks in the ND. Only thing is no certainty getting omeara and mitch would be long gone

Still can't believe this. He is our current B&F, and he is the player we decide to move on?

Doesn't make sense to me, many players retire and get coaching gigs, don't see why Sam has to spend a year or two playing in W.A. and then take up coaching.
Always thought I would see Sam retiring as a Hawthorn player, doesn't seem right that he will end up wearing blue and gold.

I have to have faith in what our great club does, but at the moment I'm feeling shattered

This is the best thing for all parties. Obviously it hurts now for us but in the long run it is for the best.

Mitchell leaves the club with grace. Our memories of him will be never tarnished as he left us playing the best footy of his life. 300+ games, 5 B&F's, 4 flags. A rightful Brownlow. Without a doubt the 2nd best midfielder in our clubs history which is pretty bloody good considering the man ahead of him is the greatest player of all time. He gets an extra pay check, a guaranteed job lined up and his family are happy.

West Coast get a football genius who can teach their young inconsistent midfielders a thing or two. Simpson gets a highly valued player who will benefit in the short term and an excellent off-field prospect to add to the coaching panel in the medium to long term.

Hawthorn free up space to plan for our future. A new young kid gets opportunity to play in one of the best systems in the comp. Wishful thinking but Mitch does his apprentice in the West and returns to coach us once more when Clarko says times up.

What am i missing with all of these 30 pages of insanity.....
"Squeezed out"......
"Pushed"......
"Shit move by the club"....
Etc etc

He is a CONTRACTED PLAYER.
If we didn't like the deal, it WOULDNT HAPPEN!
If Sam didn't like the deal, it WOULDNT HAPPEN!

By definition, the deal is good for the club, and good for Sam!

I can't understand the notion that trading Mitch for trash= Win for Hawthorn. What? It will only be a win for Hawthorn if next year we get Fyfe in free agency... Which is highly unlikely, so until then I don't wanna hear that bullshit.

Also GW said this has nothing to do with cap relief so maybe we can land another young mid to go with JOM and Tom Mitchell, I really rate Jarryd Lyons and would be very happy to get him. That would ease the blow imo.

Yep, PSD. Big risk, but a calculated one. They'd have to have an educated guess on who had enough cap space to fit in a front ended $1M+ contract.

Just trying to make sense of today.

Hill to Freo
Fyfe to Hawthorn

The whole O'Meara thing is just the HFC playing funny buggers!
Now that Mitch is gone, we aint in the game for O'Meara. Kiss that goodbye.

But Fyfe sounds good.

You are looking at it wrong, it opens up cap space and helps secure two and maybe another talent. I expect two of the three others will move next year, with Hodge staying as an assistant.

Hawthorn have no plan to bottom out, want a degree of continuity and are happy to turnover senior talent and trade. It has worked so far. I mean, few thought losing the best player in the comp would lead to the Hawks being a tripple premiership club.

Likewise, the club may want goodwill with a champ that may return in 5 years as a senior coach.
Hodge is not interested in coaching

This is not a fait accompli. Anything can happen in a few years. Sam might get another offer from another club before we are in a position to employ him or he might turn out to be a dud coach and remember Clarko was chosen ahead of some former Hawk players for the coaching job. People seems to think it's all OK as he will come back as coach some day, if that never happens will we still think trading him for peanuts was a good idea?
Spose we won't know if it's a good idea untill some point in the future. I'm a mechanic I know how cars run not football club's. While personally I don't want to see Sam go let alone wear another club's colours, make me ill just thinking about it, I have to put my faith in a administration that has delivered an unbelievable amount of success. Every decision has a element of risk attached (except punting on sports events apparently, according to the betting ad's if you wager every waking moment you never loose) but you do the homework, weigh up the pros and cons, make a move and hope for the best. If you have ever had a hemorrhoidectomy you would know that your hoping in the long term it was worth it cause brother in the short term it erts'.

I cannot stop thinking about this Mitchell move. Completely devastated.

I see people saying it's a win win.. it's a win for the eagles as they get an amazing player for almost nothing.

How is it a win for us? Or Mitch?

I can't explain why, let alone get my head around it, but something, tells me this has been plotted by Clarko and rubber stamped by Sam after in depth discussion.

It all may seem ludicrous at the moment but at the end of the day, decisions are always made for the betterment of the club.

Again, I have no evidence but if this falls through, and Sam M moves to the Eagles, it could prove a master stroke that may eventually land us more success in the near not too distant future.

Typical Hawks, blind siding everyone once again :-)

Mate, I'm as shattered as you are, and you are absolutely entitled to vent, I know I have posted at least 4 times that I'm shattered.

I just have to say I strongly disagree with your references to Management stuffing up the cap and trying to cover it up.

1) Sam himself this was first brought up 12 months ago and he wasn't totally against it then (though it got parked, and maybe he thought that was that)
2) AFL clubs are run as well oiled businesses (most of them, certainly we are), and we have one of, if not the best (without AFL draft manipulation) list managers to date in the AFL in Graeme Wright. I just can't see them making that kind of mistake.
3) There are many other players they could have cleared without anyone raising an eyebrow or questioning the club, if it was because they went over the cap with the new signings. Imagine they are $200 maybe even $400K over? They could've moved on O'Rourke, Schoey, Delisted Spangher, all with much less media spotlight.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN, truly I do, I love Sammy, I just respectfully disagree with your point on a conspiracy over it. Hope you stay true to our club (I'm sure you will) as they've been bloody brilliant to us and we have to trust them, lest we become like other club's supporters and have board challenges every other year (hello Richmond?)
This!

Could it be because Sam wants to?

This is what I don't get, his want to go to Perth (be it player or coach). In the SEN interview you could sense the family has
made the decision that their imminent future is in Perth. Considering they are local kids from the sticks of Melbourne I
just don't understand.

If you can name a child Smith then anything is possible.

To all those trying to piece it altogether, just don't coz it is so f@*king wrong.

Mate gunston & shiels are the long term future.

Clarko playing the long game again maybe like in 04??
Is shiels and gunstan current B&F winners?? Do they poll in the brownlow much ? I didn't see them even fire in the finals, I've been waiting for Gunstan to stand and be counted for ages no sign of that even with roughy out!

Is everyone skipping over the detail that Mitchell very nearly went to West Coast this time last year. It may be news to most of us but it has actually been in the works for quite some time.

Get a grip son

Toys are back in pram.

If he plays one year I am ok.

If he plays two years and could have got to 350 with us... words wont describe...

I don't get this BS Hodge has been given a spot on our coaching panel when he retires. Mitch is the far better thinker.

We must be after a bigger fish and tanking for a year or two to have another assault.
