Does anyone else reckon Sheldon looks like a turtle (as in this pic above)? I reckon he does. It should be his nickname.

Turtle Sheldon.

I have been pretty impressed with how Sheldon has played so far. Things seem to go well when he has the ball in his hands - a combination of good decision making and good disposal.

He doesn't look like he's going to physically impose himself on the game, but he could be quite similar to many of the Bulldogs' players, who are fleet-footed, excellent disposers of the ball and good decision makers. We need players like that.

While I wouldn't say that he's cemented a spot in the 22 just yet, he isn't far off doing so, if he can continue to be as effective as he has in his first three games.

I reckon he plays a size above himself though. Saw him get a couple of tackles where I have no idea how he managed it.

He is a footballer! Moves beautifully with the ball, has good evasive skills that afford him extra time to hit his targets.

Adcock

"Sam Sheldon has come into our defence and he's been really solid. A couple more games under his belt and I think he'll be one that people will be talking about."

I reckon Sheldon got burnt by Warren a bit yesterday. He played a little bit too loose and not close enough when the ball was coming in to prevent Warren from being an option, in my opinion.

Against Richmond, Nahas got away from Sheldon a couple of time as well, but Sheldon managed to have more of an impact over all, so he got away with it.

Sheldon's work going forward is very good and he is also good at winning the contest for the loose or contested ball (or at least making sure that his opponent doesn't get away with it easily), but he might need a bit of work in making sure his opponent doesn't burn him due to him not playing tight enough.

I don't think his future lies in defence but it is a great learning experience for him to be playing back there a lot like when Akermanis was played back in defence in his younger years.

'Skinny' kid says early go was no blue

SAM Sheldon could have easily been wearing Carlton's navy blue, but the Brisbane Lion is glad impatience got the better of him.
The 20-year-old son of triple Carlton premiership player Ken Sheldon was selected by the Lions with pick No. 70 in the 2006 draft.
Under-age and under-sized at the time, Carlton was planning to recruit Sheldon under the father-son rule in the 2007 draft.
However, Sheldon's desire to follow in his father's footsteps into senior football could not wait and he threw his hat into the ring.
He holds no grudge against Carlton for not calling on his services and is happy to call Brisbane home.
"I was only a skinny 17-year-old, so it was probably a risk for them to take me," Sheldon said.
"They didn't want to take that risk which is fair enough.
"I wasn't going to go into the draft but then I though I may as well have a crack and see what happens.
"I was lucky that Brisbane took me and have given me an opportunity.
"Brisbane is home for me now and I couldn't be happier at the club."
In a strange twist of fate, the other "son of a gun" in action last night was Carlton's Marc Murphy whose father, John, played 214 games for Fitzroy.
The Lions courted Murphy in 2004 but the midfielder opted not to head to Brisbane under the father-son rule.
He was taken by the Blues with the No. 1 draft pick in 2005.
Sheldon - who wears the No. 3 guernsey made famous by coach Michael Voss - broke his leg in 2007, was sidelined by osteitis pubis last year and was struck down by glandular fever in the pre-season.
However, he fought back to make his senior debut in Brisbane's victory over Essendon last month and has played six straight games in the Lions' backline.
Sheldon - who stands at 183cm tall and tips the scales at 79kg - has impressed Voss with his decision making under pressure, intensity at the contest and his raw aggression.
He is the kind of pure footballer who boasts instinctive qualities, such as poise and toughness, that cannot be coached.

The commentators were saying some nice things about Sam last night.

Massive steal with pick 70!

Sammy has a Brennanesque ability to find his way out of sticky situations. That can't be taught. Backline is a great place for him to find his feet at AFL level, but with his skillset, his future lies up forward and in the middle.

Its amazing how easy he is keeping his spot in the team. He still isn't a big boy, but he has great tackling ability. He is defending against and laying tackles on players bigger and stronger than him. He doesn't look out of place at this level, even though the size of his body does. I remember one great run he did through about 3 players v Melb. Is great value down back, can't wait until he finds his way to a half forward / mid type role to see what he can do their. He does seem to be very aware of the play and who is around him.

Reminds me a bit of Luke Power as a youngster. Not endowed with brilliant speed or audacious skill but just seems to understand the game better than most. The other one who I see some comparisons with is Trent Cotchin who, on his first season's performances, is one of the more "aware" youngsters that I've seen.

The only thing I would add is that Sammy needs to trust his kicking. He can sometimes look a little gun shy in terms of taking risks with his disposal and uses the handball as a defensive option rather than kicking or using a proactive handball. When he loses that inhibition, he is very creative and quite reliable. I'd be encouraging him to do it more often.

Showed some great signs on saturday night, like when he took that over head mark on 50 while Nick Maxwell gave him a solid bump and than he landed on his feet and side stepped him and gave a good kick into the centre I think it was with Browny out numbered of course.

Whilst I have been imprssed with SOKS development this year, i think that he has tailed off over the last month.

I think he could do with a cpl of weeks in the twos as a freshen up, whcih would also give the team an oppurtunity to look at alternatives like Rockliff and Hawksley.

Totally agree Charles, I have found I am becoming less impressed by him each week.

On a side note, I heard Browny say that young Sam lives with him and Kylie.

Yeah, i tend to agree with that. IMO, Sammy has done enough to secure his spot in the team next year, lets see a string of games from the other youngsters so we can make a fair assessment.
