Gday Pie faithful. Im not usually a cross-threader, I know my place over at the Tiges board and rarely venture off there but a good friend of my sons is making his debut on Friday night, Sammy Iles. Just wanted to wish him all the best and may you guys give him a winning start to his AFL career. Go Sammy...do yourself proud son and give the Pies some good news this week!

Great news when a new kid makes his debut. Sam seems strange as he looked light and needed some development the last time I saw him, and then he hasn't been awesome in the VFL. Spent most of his weeks at the Willy 2nds, but has played the last 4 in the seniors. Was in the best last week, so obviously a form thing, and a reward I guess.

Was apparently very, very good last week.

Also, it could be a pace issue - We were found out as slow in Rd 1, so it's possible Malthouse is using the available pace.

Sammy is said to be quite the speedster.

He's built for endurance, and that is perfect for the Crows.

However...

Iles won't make his debut this week..........Sorry, True Thylacine. I suspect it's a confidence thing.

I watched him meticulously last week: he uses the ball well, and he runs all day.
Whatever happens...Iles has a luminous future from what I have seen.

I was a bit surprised by Sam's selection too, not that I want to put a damper on his ability, I just didn't think he was burning up the track at Willy to get noticed for selection and I haven't missed a Willy game this year so far. At the risk of sounding awfully biased, I thought my boy was a little further up the line than Sam and I don't think John's quite ready yet either. I had a look at both kid's stats for the year...
Sam's played 5 games Willy reserves (one game named 4th best), 6 games in the seniors (one game named 5th best last week).

John's played 2 games in the reserves, 10 games in the seniors (named in the best 6th and 2nd best last week).

Obviously the selection committee look for different attributes. I wish Sam all the best for his debut.

Despite him being named.

Why name him for a debut and not play him?

It's a tad odd that we have Licuria named as an emergency.

Furthermore, we formerly had four teenagers in the team - five including Iles.

So from this thread it appears we have a kid who has lightning pace, can run all day, and uses the ball pretty well. Add to that that he is an inside midfielder, and I would suggest that is pretty good news.

Looking forward to seeing this young fella.

MM has actually done this with more regularity than a Metamucil conference!

And MM has also thrown kids to the wolves before, with seemingly little Seagulls form.

It's his "thang", along with selecting WCE wash ups and avoiding questions at press conferences.

Hardly, he hasn't been playing the last two weeks either.

Age is but a number, you don't select a kid for his first game and not play him, it's beyond stupid.

Lica will come in for Iles.

Tend to agree. (I hate myself for saying that because of your avatar:p:D)

I reckon they'll take him over to Adelaide to get a feel for the big league, kind of like Geelong did with N. Ablett a few years ago. Different circumstances I know but I can definitely see the logic.

As stated, he did with Pendles.

It would at least mess with the process fo the oppo a bit, as they'd have to put resources into who the kid is, what are his attributes, where/who will he play on etc., instead of how to shut down the traditional Lica/O'Bree/Burns combo.

It's not completely idiotic, and if Iles ain't playing, MM would have told him.

Well I hope the kid plays . Always exciting to see new talent coming through. Big ask , of both him and the team , against the Crowbots .
Let's see what they are made of.

Yep, me too :thumbsu:

There is no way they will pull Iles from the team after naming him.

Pendlebury was only named on an extended interchange bench, there is a huge difference.

If anyone is a L/C would be Thomas, surely...the kid missed one week with a sprained A/C joint, and was expected to miss another week.

With Pendlerbury he was named in the 25 man squad and not the 22. MM hasn't done this for a long time.
Iles is in the 22, if anyone is to come out it would be Thomas, Maxwell or J.Cloke.
What MM does do more often is put a player in the emergencies and then slip them in for a debut slipping under the radar, he has done this with Swan's debut and I think Rowe.
