I am hoping that we can be really competitive in the vfl next year and look to push for the premiership. With sides like Hawthorn, the Doggies and now Melbourne developing strong teams it is an idicatinv of where the club as at.

I think that developing Saints players is the priority but I think that is best done with a competitive environment where we are trying to win games and finals. I hope that we don't persist with the three ruck set up we went with sometimes last year, would prefer a ruck to rest or play development league.

With the new alignment deal we could see lots of Saints players in the Sandy lineup each week. Was putting together a best 22 and Sandy 22 and thought it would be good to see other people's thoughts. For round one I would think it could be something like this:

Rice Goddard Le Grice
DMac Coughlan White
NOK Ainsworth Freeman
Stevens Gilbert Minchi
Lonie Peirce Wright
Longer Sinclair Dunston
Fisher, Ong, 2x Irish recruits, 3x draft picks

This would onviously change depending on Saibts best 22 and injuries but I think it looks like a strong team. I also think that it does highlight some of our depth needs.

I'm hoping we might rookie Kade Answerth, he probably gets a go on someone's rookie list at least, he's still a kid and had an incredible season in the VFL and over came a lot of the things that were knocks on him in the draft.

I'd like us to develop Pierce as a straight full-forward at Sandy. Have Longer and Holmes running around most of the time as the two rucks.

Im taking it your hoping to make him a ruck option thats able to drift fwd and cause some damage in the Fwd line. Or are you thinking of him being another marking fwd to compete with Paddy, Bruce and Membrey?
Have you seen anything in him Perse that makes you think hes got that development in him?
Im hoping for the best from Pierce but as of yet im not really sold on him. Although i do realize young talls can take time to come good.
Hickey has shown glimpses of drifting fwd and being handy. Im hoping he keeps improving that part of his game.
And as much as i love Billy Longer in the Ruck when he gets in the fwd line his arms are about as useful as a T-Rex's.
This brings up the old 'stand alone Vs Sandy ' reserves team debate. If your stand alone you can persist with developing a certain player in a certain position for a bit longer than you could if your merged with a VFL side whos intention is more about winning than development.
Pierce is gonna be real interesting to watch next yr.
Hes been in the system a while now. Will he just tread water or show genuine improvement??

My thinking is, Sandy don't have two talls for their forward line: they have Fisher, and we don't really have anybody else as depth in that role right now. Maybe we will after the draft, but I doubt it. So, they need a second tall, we can't play three rucks there... and ultimately, it is highly unlikely that Pierce will get into the seniors as a pure ruckman, given the other two. He is more likely to get a gig in the forward line if Paddy, Members or Bruce get injured (that's three chances he's got of playing seniors), than he will in the ruck. So the more he plays in that role at Sandy, the more proficient he should become in it - he's got his rucking down fine for now, let's weight his development in terms of his forward play, to see if he can become a ruck-forward. That would only add to the versatility of our side. It's a win-win: Sandy get a second tall forward, and the Saints get a developing ruck-forward.

Yeah good points.
Unless of course hes stinking it up in the fwd line for Sandy in which case thats when you might get the conflict between Sandy and Saints if either party has different views on him.
But its probably not a bad idea at all Perse:thumbsu:

Gonna go out on a limb and say our seconds pool around Round 1 will be;

FB: Rice - Coughlan - Webster
HB: White - Gilbert - Wright
RK: Longer - Minchington - Steele
CR: McKenzie - Sinclair - Freeman
HF: O'Kearney - Goddard - Stevens
FF: Lonie - Pierce - Gresham
IC: Holmes draftee draftee draftee

And that's pretty bloody handy...

Barring injury, the only players you'd say are bolted on Seniors would be:

Riewoldt
Steven
Bruce
Armitage
Carlisle
Dempster
Montagna
Geary
Hickey
Newnes
Weller

Then the next tier, some of whom are named above:

Membrey
McCartin
Billings
Savage
Goddard
Roberton
Brown
Gilbert
Dunstan
Ross
Steele
Stevens
Gresham
Acres
Webster
McKenzie
Wright
Minchington

The rest are probably odds on to start in the Twos...

Gotta say, I'm pretty happy with the list at the moment.

I reckon Ross is walk up best 22 barring injury unless we have a huge step up from half a dozen mids.
