Our new trio of defenders? Thompson, Young, and Davis? Sounds good :thumbsu: Having not seen Thompson play does he play a similar role to Bock running off their opponent? or more like Rutten who gets a few touches in the backline but doesn't run the lines?

I'd suggest that at least two of the South trio of Talia, McKernan and Otten will find their way to our long term defence.

Definitely more of a Bock type player, he likes to run off his opponent and really take the game on. He has great speed and especially agility for someone his size. He's certainly got a thumping kick (haven't seen the vid yet) it's just when going short he can have a few troubles. I really, really like him. :thumbsu:

Very, very impressive from Thompson. :thumbsu: He's got a huge future if he keeps developing, and playing league footy is only going to speed up that progress.

Gee, that is a super wrap for Thompson :thumbsu: When you consider that we rated him as highly as we did (even though it wasn't highly enough to take him before the rookie draft) in large part because he's a great character with real leadership potential (what did Rendell say, "the best interview I've ever been a part of" or something like that?), it's awesome to see that as a skinny tall who came to us with injuries he's already putting in dominant performances at league level as well :thumbsu: Can't wait to see what he's able to do next year, if reports about the kind of guy he is are right he should be able to keep the momentum going :)

I was starting to feel that as more and more of our youth are playing at AFL level these few years of having loads of exciting youth at league level may be over, but maybe not... :p

Gotta say, between Jaensch, Wright, Henderson, Thompson and Riley we probably have our most promising batch of rookies since the Bock, Rutten and Mattner class:thumbsu:

I'd go as far as to say more promising. Each of Rutten, Bock and Mattner have turned into great players (well, Bock and Rutten are great, and Mattner is above average) but my memory is that early on they didn't look as comfortable so quickly as the likes of Jaensch, Wright and Henderson. I guess that has a lot to do with the ages of Jaensch and Wright, and their sizes, but here half a year after recruiting them I have no difficulty seeing Jaensch and Wright have AFL career, which I wouldn't have said about BRM back midway through 2002.

Of course, time distorts memories so I may just be forgetting how quickly they established themselves :o

Forgetting how good Thompson looked... how bloody good did Riley look in that video... he looks an absolute sensation. If he can develop physically a little more and show that sort of guile at AFL level he might turn out to be the best of the lot. Either that or South are shit beyond belief.

Cook is very under the pump to stay on the list I think... by virtue of what others are showing around him. Not great that he's in a struggling South side... but yeah.

Unless he wants to leave, or does something absolutely stupid in the second half of the year, I'd say he's no chance at all be delisted. Considering we've already lost Burton, Edwards and Goodwin, are likely to lose McLeod as well, and are on record as not really wanting to pick too deeply into the draft, and have heard rumours that a player or two will choose to leave the Crows, it's not as though we'll be stretching to find players to delist. Cook played a number of games this year and didn't look that far off in my opinion.

All that being said, there wouldn't be too many players on the senior list behind him at the moment. Jacky would be arguably the only one, ignoring Shaw and Craig because it's their first year. McKernan and Petrenko not far ahead of him, though Petrenko has demonstrated in one good quarter of football that he can play defence with aplomb and will likely be given that position with McLeod likely to depart next season. And of course, given the likely rookie upgrades of Jaensch and Henderson, with Schmidt, Wright and Thompson and Riley all possibilities as well (though they can keep the latter three on the rookie list for another season if they want, with Donnelly opening up an extra spot) we won't be able to draft too many players without an extra delisting or two.

Now I'm not sure myself :o For now I'll say Burton, Goodwin, Edwards, McLeod, Jacky and Donnelly to go, Jaensch and Hendo to be upgraded leaving us with three picks in the ND and three picks in the rookie draft. Any departing players to be traded (either directly or subsequently via picks received) for other players. Cook, or some other underperforming senior-listed player, may be in trouble if we end up with an additional high pick from a trade (Crows player for some other player + high pick, can't see this happening though...) but otherwise he should be safe.

Edit: Whoa... forgot about Hentschel :o Make it four picks in the national draft then, or in the rookie draft if one of our other rookies forces their way onto our the senior list in the next few months.
