schoemachers quite easily. i could not believe our luck that he fell through to us at 16.
when you think about it he is a top 2 or 3 pick because of his height and versatility. i wouldnt be surprised if he turned out to be the best player from the draft by the end of his illastrious career.
yarran on the other hand is a small forward who are a dime a dozen expect for rioli who is a real gem and comes along once a generation.

Had to point that bit out of Rioli.....yet I still think Yarran is the best has the most potential from the draft just like Rioli last year

Schoenmakers or Rioli is an arse compared to Yarran.

Hawthorn drafting Schoenmakers suggests they have no confidence in Thorp or Dowler.

They want to make Schoenmakers into a CHB because they have no replacements for Croad and a short backline.

Yet they picked Lisle with pick 53 or thereabouts.

Smacks of desperation to keep their premiership window open...

Sides will be throwing players as tall as Kreuzer, Hawkins, Kennedy, Clark, Vickery, Butcher, Watts, Henderson, Brown and Gumbleton at a Hawthorn backline minus Croad.

Leave Rioli out of this discussion, he was a star in a premiership compared to Yarran.

Lisle is a completely different player to Dowler and Thorp, i'd expect him to be groomed for a FB possie. Schoenmakers is similar to an O'Keefe, but taller. Might be able to play CHB and looks ready to adapt to that role. Certainly has the speed and overhead ability. His kicking is elite for a big fella too.

Lisle was a steal . . . we expected him to go by pick 20.

You forget that we won a premiership where Croad missed most of the game with a foot injury. We get Croad back early in 09, plus we have players as tall as Lisle, Thorp, Gilham, Schoenmakers, Roughead, Campbell and Renouf to throw into defence, oh and Luke Hodge too :D

No sale.

I don't think you actually believe this yourself (surely you can't). If that is the case where, does that leave Natanui, Hurley, Vickery, Davis, Johnston, Cordy & Brown, talls that were all taken before Schoenmakers? Not to mention the smalls/mids of the calibre of Hartlett, Yarran, Ziebell, Rich & Sidebottom.

Schoenmakers didn't fall through to 16, he was taken marginally earlier than predicted by most of the experts. So we are comparing someone who was rated by most, if not all to be a definite Top 10 pick (Yarran), to someone who was taken higher than expected (Schoenmakers) & is a definite speculative pick.

Yarran easily. Never been sold on Schoenmakers (game against NSW/ACT was his best but they were VERY poor opposition) ... IMO Hawks recruiters went a bit too googly eyed over the 'sexy' atrributes (192cm+ height, excellent DC results and neat footskills) and didn't concern themselves enough about his level of production (which is below average for a 1st rounder). Also looks like they're going to try to turn him into something he's not (CHB rather than lead-up HF).

Schoenmakers easily,pure class.

finally someone with some sense!
the only player from the draft that may end up better then scoenmakers is watts. and that is a big if.
i really think we got the player off the draft and come round 22 in 09 so will the other 15 clubs.

Saw this years u18 SA game. Schoenmakers's kicking is very impressive for a big kid. A couple of times he spotted a team mate out the corner of his eyes kicked across his body and delivered it accurately. He looks like a smart footballer with great kicking skills. Nothing has changed in Hawks drafting this trait is a must.

Yarran looks like a solid midfielder. It depends what your team structure requires. I will go with Shoe man because Hawks deemed him as a required pick for our list/depth. Really looking at Carlton there structure probably requires the Shoe man more than Yarran!

How about you try these highlights instead playing against men:

Definately better but you could compile some pretty good highlights of a player over a number of games. Try watching Buddy's 113 goals in a row you would think he was the best forward ever!

Everytime you post god kills a fluffy and innocent kitten, I swear.

Saying that Hawthorn drafted Schoenmaker because they had little faith in Thorp and Dowler is absurd. Did you even think about what you were posting before pressing enter?

Going by your theory, any player picked up at any draft is taken because the club has no faith in the current players on their list.
That's just stupid. Players are picked up on a best fit, best available scenario.
It's called building depth.

I reckon if Carlton had one of either Thorp, Dowler or Schoenmakers on their list they would look a lot more promising.

Hawthorn's drafting strategy is very clever. They have no real needs to fill at this point so they take KPP. They hold their value well and if the time comes that one needs to be traded they will be fairly compensated you'd think.

On the case of Yarran v Schoenmakers, if Yarran turns out the way you'd hope he may have a fair case as being the better player. But Schoenmakers will be very handy none the less, and I would rather a good KPP to a small forward with some potential to play midfield at a later date.
