After watching last night's game, it's probably one of the first matches where I really felt like there was a completely botched review result, that was purely a result of having inadequate technology on the goal line.

I'm not 100% on the set up they use but it really seems like they've just got a point and shoot camera on the line. Whatever it is it's "manifestly inadequate".

I could tape my iPhone to the goal post and record in slo-motion and get a clearer picture of goal line results.

Please somebody with connections to AFL HQ let them know about high frame rate video and how it works.

Longmire is right.
It's a great idea but invest in the appropriate technology or it's a waste of time.
Those super slow mo they have on the cricket would be perfect, for example
That one last night should have been obvious with a sharp image. Instead we got a blur that left us all in doubt.
The direction the ball travelled in suggested it was punched thru, but it's a guess.

That's the thing that gets me - this tech is available at consumer level for chump change. The problem seems to be them trying to slow down a standard frame rate video recording, where you just don't capture enough frames to get a smooth view.

That's around 24-29fps usually, compared to the slow motion available on consumer level cameras 60-90fps or even the iPhones and android phones which can record at 120fps or even higher!

It's astounding nobody has tapped them on the shoulder and let them know about it. Just another area where the game can afford to be progressive vs traditional and they miss the opportunity.

I can't understand why the AFL is trying to do this with inferior equipment. They keep trotting out the line of how expensive it would be to set it up properly, again last night Gill's brother was stating that it's too expensive. I thought this was a billion dollar industry. I don't know the ins and outs of setting it all up, but if they looked at the photron or phantom high speed cameras then they would be able to get 1000+fps and get these decisions right. Yes the cameras aren't cheap at around $100k+ per camera but if your not going to do it properly then don't do it at all. GoPros duct taped around the post aren't going to cut it!

As tiger supporters it's hard not to look at that decision last night and think of the Bolton decision against GWS. Last nights one was definitely touched but I can understand that they thought it was inconclusive. I don't get how they could call the Bolton one against GWS conclusive, last nights was much more obvious. We would be sitting 2nd on the ladder!

I would like to know if the 3rd umpire listens to the commentary? Just about every time I have seen a 3rd umpire call this year it has been the way the commentators are calling it.

I watch youtube people get ready to record in 4-8k and we can only manage 720p if that for live to air. Absolute joke. The AFL should do a deal next rights bargining time that it has to be shot at a mimimum 1080p and the AFL will then force the clubs to be more forthcoming with post match interviews and have greater game day access
