Morrison to skip parliament, set sail for the UK on AUKUS trip

By James Massola

Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison will miss six days of parliament to travel to the United Kingdom to discuss and promote the historic AUKUS agreement.
Morrison is one of the architects of the AUKUS agreement, which is designed to deliver nuclear-powered submarines to Australia by the early 2030s, and he will meet senior UK government officials and defence industry executives.

Earlier this year, this masthead revealed associates of Morrison had been sounded outabout the former prime minister taking on a job in the UK defence industry and this trip will do nothing to tamp down speculation in the Liberal Party that his future in politics could draw to a close by the end of the year.
Morrison will depart for the UK on Wednesday and will miss the final six sitting days of parliament’s winter sitting. He will deliver a speech at the Oxford Union while away, attend a lunch at the UK Policy Exchange think tank and attend events to mark the 40th anniversary of the International Democratic Union (IDU), an international forum for centre right political parties.

Fellow former prime ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott are also expected to attend the two day IDU event.
“As founder and architect of the AUKUS agreement I will continue to do all I can to support its success and continue to promote the strong bipartisan support that exists for AUKUS,” Morrison said. “I am also appreciative to the government for their assistance with my arrangements during my stay through the UK High Commissioner.”
The former prime minister will be joined by his wife and two children on the trip and the family will have a private holiday in the UK afterwards, during the school holidays.
Morrison will not be paid for any of the events he attends and is appearing at all events in an honorary capacity.
Morrison is an honorary member of the IDU strategic advisory board and his flights and accommodation have been provided by the organisation.
So he is being paid by a foreign company to talk about an activity he doesn't have even shadow ministry responsibilities for and doesn't have to take leave to skip parliament. We need a major crack down on pollies overseas travel rorts and secondary sources of income.

If it would be so bad, can he explain why he cheered it on?
It wouldn't surprise me if he thought it was going to bring on the Rapture like the happy clappers want.
In the game they're playing they honestly thing Jesus is going to return to earth and escort the prosperity Christians to heaven while the undeserving poor are forever tortured or something. Just the sort of thing you'd expect a loving God to do.

The future of the earth and most of the people on it really doesn't play into their thinking. Hence why he's perfectly happy to destroy the ecology of the earth. God's going to sort it all out.

Sad to say I agree. These cookers should be rounded up and sent to Christmas Island in the "national interest".

This is what the end of the world sounds like anyhow ........

Are we sure he didn’t appoint himself to a shadow ministry?

I'm more than happy to compare their achievements. You list Morrison's achievements and then I'll counter.

The context is why Morrisons comments are newsworthy.

Pauls success as treasurer is beyond question. Morrison stopped the boats.
Both Morrison & Keating won 'unwinnable elections' & neither were much chop as PM.

1/designed, engineered and hand built the titan submarine.
Beat that big boy.
Well he did build this. Sure it is a complete abomination, the design is horrible and the materials are cold (like the man and his policy), but Morrison did in fact build it. Unless this is a legitimate Liberal Party award?

What context? He is skipping parliament to speak s**t on things that no longer involve him.

What is it now - 18 months and still no one has offered him a real job. Embarrassing.

For anyone that likes deep political reading & wants to relive the horror.

I think I’ve emerged from the trauma enough to feel able to tackle this now. Thanks for reminding me to grab a copy.

(If you’re looking for further horror-reliving, Andrew P. Street’s book on Abbott does that in spades too, but fortunately is also very very funny.)
