By the end of season 2005, the AFC will have to make the decision on whether to delist him or keep him going.

His games in 2004 showed small signs, but contained an obvious lack of consitency. His kicking in front of goal was poor at times, and as a result made him a less-than-desirable choice as a forward.

And just when I was about to write him off for season 2005, he gives us a surprisingly good performance against Port in Round 1 of the Wizard Cup. Playing in the backline: he was disciplined, evasive, and his disposal was improved.

So what are your thoughts? Is he in our best 22? Is he good enough to wear the Red, Blue and Gold on a consistent basis? Or is an average player who we shouldn't be wasting our time with?

I thought he was harshly treated last year after he was dropped after a game in Tassie I think..........he certainly wasn't the worst that day. I was all for bringning him back in 'cos he showed something up forward.

But after seeing him at training earlier in the year...it is clear that there are some bigger bodies in front of him.....so I was thinking depth player at best until we have a chance to turn him over.

So far his practice game form has been solid........ ??......who knows - it's a tough one......tonight will give him another chance to show his lack of bulk doesn't count against him.

I agree that he played a decent game against Port but we have to remember that he was playing against a Port Rookie, I cant remember who it was but it wasnt anyone who is going to be a regular 22 for Port this year.

I would take that performance with a pinch of salt. I will wait for later on in the season to make a judgement.

I agree. I thought he really showed what he is capable of in the Wizard Cup vs Port.
I think at the moment he has definitely earnt a spot on the half back line and I'd be looking at him playing a fair whack of the season there.
DON'T PUT HIM IN FRONT OF (our) GOALS!!!

Ive never been a fan of Scott Stevens, just too slow and sloppy with disposal.

Really needs to make the most of an oppotunity when it comes his way, or, he will be told to start packing his bags.

He seemed better when he was playing for Sydney. Not in my 22 but a useful back-up player - wouldnt lose any sleep he was delisted, but you never know what might happen in 2005.

Pretty much says it all, Welcome aboard :)

Not in the best 22 but a very good depth player. Has a genuine footy brain but he is not strong enough and is very inconsistent. I do like him more as a defender than I do as a forward. Hopefully he can become more consistent and he can be a Bassett type defender for us.

Stiffy taht's a pretty good assessment.
Certainly not as bad as some have been suggesting in recent months, but still not in my best 22.

Even at SANFL level hes up and down. Played some very good games down back for the Magpies last year in a Chad Cornes type role. Also played very well in front of goals in a few games. Picked up 30 disposals, 10 marks and 5.6 against the Bloods in Round 14 and then picked up 20 disposals, 9 marks and 4 goals in Round 16 against the Eagles.

I think if he was to succeed at AFL level it will be as a third tall in defence.

Personally dislike him a lot. Would be my first in line for a delisting (having never seen Smith play). I seem to be the only one who thought he played poorly against port, in the first quarter I counted 3 goals that were caused by him messing something up. He played better after that, but still not worthy og a game IMO.

Like many others, I can't see this bloke ever being in our best 22. He's a depth player only and his use by date will come when the club feels it's got the talls adequately covered.

Very inconsistent with his best being good enough and his worst far from adequate.

As Macca19 says, best suited to being the 3rd tall in defence, but definitely not in our best 22.

Amazing that we even bothered to get him, unless it was done as a cheap filler until we get the real thing via the draft.

Yep, looks better suited to being the 3rd tall defender than a forward. Not in our best 22. Would think he is now behind Bock too.

Like most I am neither here nor there on S Stevens but do think while Hart is absent he may well be our other backpocket .I actually feel he would be better on Matera than Begley.

As posted if he is delisted ''thanks for coming'' if not he needs to get more mentally focussed. I think he has the skills but I dont know about application.

I think that sums up a lot of peoples thoughts, neither condeming or praising.

We know he's got some skills and footy smarts but we rarely see a productive output.

He can take a good mark at times but his disposal can be disappointing.

Having said that he has shown glimpses of being able to play good footy. Not a first choice in my opinion but it would be good to see what he can do and if he can do what we would all like him to do.
